So, um, yeah, for everyone who was asking, um

I'm going to have a book

WE HAVE NEWS (yes we are yelling)
OKD is launching a small press! Our first book will be none other than the beloved Cathy Ulrich’s (
@loki_writes
) “Ghosts of You,” a full-length collection of her Murdered Ladies Series, out 10/15/19
Preorder your copy: !
So, ah -- this journal, right? This journal I've been trying to get a story into since college (it's been a few days), right?
I will have a story in this journal very soon and it is one of those things that is kind of unbelievable and anyway! I'm really excited! 💖
Word of advice for writers:
Please read and follow submission guidelines. If you cannot do so and your piece is rejected, a further word of advice: Do NOT tell the editors to put on their big girl pants. They will share your name with all their editor friends, should anyone ask.
Sometimes, I like to think of the difference between fiction and creative nonfiction like this:
Fiction is the lie that reveals the truth.
Creative nonfiction is the truth that reveals the lie.
💖
Our big news right now is that
@loki_writes
's book "Ghosts of You" is going to be taught in a writing class at the University of North Dakota called "The Art of Writing: Fiction." Damn straight. Cathy excels at the art of writing fiction!

Okay, I'm super curious, y'all:
What is a non-offensive thing that causes you to just drop out of a story completely?
For me, it's "movie star good looks," because it is SUCH a cheat.
In high school, I knew a girl who said "whatever honks your hamsters" instead of "whatever floats your boat," and god bless it, I hope she is really succeeding right now. 🐹
Folks, just do what works for you.
Keep writing. Keep trying.
If you need a break, take a break.
But don't compare yourself to other people. We're all just doing our own best thing. You are doing your best thing.
I hardly ever announce acceptances because what if I JINX it, but YAY one of my strangest formatted stories just got accepted by an awesome journal and I thought it would never find a home and I'm super happy and also hopefully super unjinxed!!! 🥳🥳🥳
Congrats to
@loki_writes
and Christopher Linforth on having their pieces from WRR selected by
@ambernoelle
for Best Microfiction 2021!
You can find links to their work and to our other incredible nominated pieces here:
I never thought it would actually happen, but wow! I am going to have a story in
@BestSmFictions
!!! Thank you so much,
@PassagesNorth
, for publishing my murdered babysitter story! I am so honored to be a part of this amazing publication! 💖💖💖
Maybe it's petty, but at a certain point, I stop sharing work by people who don't have the time of day for me or for uplifting others.
Does anybody else feel like this, or am I being a jerk and I should just share everyone's work, regardless of whether they ever share others'?
My book is an indie press book to read this fall! 💖💖💖
*whoops with joy*
Thanks so much,
@WendyJeanFox
!!!
(And, of course, big thanks to the lovely
@okaydonkeymag
for making this whole book thing real!)
When I was a kid, my uncle and his secretary were murdered. They were the last of a serial killer's 11 victims. My uncle's secretary was named Cathy too.
Here is a CNF I wrote about loss and fear and telephone rings. Thank you,
@trampset
and
@scottneuffer
!
My daughter was talking to her friends at lunch about their favorite books, and her friends agreed that short stories are bad.
"My mom writes short stories. She has a book," she said.
They still hate stories, but:
MY BABY REMEMBERED I WRITE STORIES AND HAVE A BOOK. 😭😭😭
Remembering a story submission at my old college lit journal where the writer had a character, upon learning some tragic news, shout (literally):
"Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!"
Y'all? I'm not crying. I know you think I'm crying, but I'm not crying.
@okaydonkeymag
,
@saraheshields
, thank you for this beauty! I can't believe it's real! 😭💖
Hi, folks! It's release day for
@loki_writes
's awesome new collection SMALL, BURNING THINGS!!! We're so excited to share this wonderful book with the world!
Unfortunately, due to delays at the printer, copies are going to be just a little bit late in arriving!
#flashfiction
I think my favorite thing about being an editor is when you get a submission and you're one of the first people to read it, because how cool is it that someone wrote a thing and wanted YOU to read it? 😍😍😍
I! Have submitted some things today! And I have not been doing much writing or submitting lately because I am so very, very tired, so I am very much proud of myself right now, thank you. 💖
Whoo, boy, just got an e-mail for a local writing workshop that asks the question "can women write as well as men?", so if you're wondering why I don't really participate much locally, *coughs politely*.
And now a message from our sponsors: If you are a white writer and are so offended by journals offering special submissions to writers of color that you must cry "racism," consider that perhaps your work wasn't going to be a good fit for that journal anyway. 💖
So! Big publication day for me! 💖💖💖
I have a new story in
@invisiblecitySF
with empty desks and dead cats that are maybe loaves of bread and the games we're playing while we wait for your return:
Okay, what is up with writers blocking editors who have rejected them politely?
This makes TWO in the last couple of weeks!!!
Unless you're a perfect writer, you are going to end up blocking EVERYBODY!
I have a new murdered lady story in
@adroitjournal
with bad stripper jokes and a paper doll cutout and the obligatory scene in the strip club and it is my most unusual formatting ever, I hope you like it! 💖
I have a story (where nothing happens) in the lovely new
@trampset
today! It was my attempt to write a story that's not about what it's about and I hope you will like it! 💖💖💖
Apparently, when you disregard every single one of my submission guidelines twice in a week (after being warned the first time), I'm somehow the bad guy for blocking you (and yeah, I'm leaving his name in there, but blocking what he called me. Hint: it's not "Cat.":
I wrote a story about ballerinas and bear attacks and hotels and oatmeal baths and what you're doing while your husband is cheating on you and it's in
@okaydonkeymag
:
I'm so honored and grateful to have one of my
@FRiGGmagazine
Japan trio named to
@Wigleaf
's Top 50! Thank you so much!
And a murdered lady story from
@gravelmag
and my ghost bride story in
@longleafreview
longlisted?
I AM NOT CRYING PROBABLY. 😭💖
Seriously, it turns out if you warn the community about abusive predators in your midst, you stand a good chance of being blackballed by certain publications that staff people who call you a liar.
So that's another fun thing about coming forward!
This never goddamn ENDS.
I have a new murdered lady story in
@wigleaf
today with stage moms and trembling siblings and dish soap:
(And also my postcard is a bit of a love letter, I'd be super honored if you read it too! 💖)
Do NOT send me stories from the perspective of Trumpists as the victims being harassed by the evil left, I hate you, I reject you, do not waste my time, I am already in a bad mood because of sad things.
The
@Wigleaf
Top 50 2023 & the Longlist are up! Thank you to our Guest Selecting Editor
@VenitaBlackburn
& to our Readers & Associate Series Editors! Just another way to celebrate writers, readers, & journals—all for very short fictions—all for the magic:
We've had some exciting times over here at the Okay Donkey headquarters in the last couple of days. This includes getting proofs of
@loki_writes
's "Ghosts of You" in the mails. Check these babies out! 👀👀👀
As an editor, there are two types of stories that will always be an impossible sell for me:
1) "The Sympathetic Serial Killer."
No. Absolutely no.
2) "What If Racism *GASP* Affected White People???"
SERIOUSLY NO.
(This has been a subtweet, thank you)
I wasn't expecting any good news today, so thank you to
@SundressPub
for naming my Murder Ostrich story as a finalist for Best of the Net! 😭💖
And thank you so much to
@SamRasnake
,
@bluefifthreview
and
@MichelleElvy
for all your support for this story! 💖💖💖
A reminder: Just because people aren't sharing their feelings about certain things on social media doesn't mean they don't HAVE feelings, it might mean they don't feel safe sharing those feelings publicly.
As always! Be kind. 💖
Lecture time:
I don't like when people say: "I could never write like this. I'm not as good as this."
Sure, maybe you can't write like the person you just read, but neither can they write like you.
You are all creating amazing things. 💖💖💖
*sniffles*
At work at the comic book store and *sniffles again*
I JUST RANG UP A COPY OF MY OWN BOOK FOR A CUSTOMER
*sniffles a third time*
I'm so *sniffles* HAPPY! 😭😭😭
Sooooo, it is one week until my book comes out!
ONE ONLY WEEK!
THAT IS ALL! A WEEK!
*squees*
To celebrate, I'm going to shout out some lovely folks who supported me and this book today! 💖💖💖
I'd love to get some recommendations for journals that don't charge for submissions! I had come into some money (okay, earned money for hard work) last year, but I don't have the money to spare right now, and I keep finding places that charge. 💖
I have a new astronaut love story out today, and it even won a contest which is a thing that never happens to me, so thank you so much

A Bouquet of Stars by
@loki_writes
is the winner of our first Flash Fiction contest.
We received over 100 submissions and our staff picked Cathy as the recipient of a $100 cash award.
Congrats to Cathy and our finalists!
Gotta love a journal who keeps you waiting six months for a response, then declines your piece for being "previously published," then sends you a link to a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STORY to prove you wrong about your submission NOT being previously published. 😒
One thing I can't stand is the people who follow you, then when you follow them back, they unfollow you so they can bolster their numbers. I catch you doing that crap, I'm blocking you, I don't care how important you are.
(Yes, this is a subtweet for the woman I just blocked.)
So incredibly grateful and honored to have my talking giraffes story from
@TinyMolecules
be a part of this year's
@bestmicrofic
!
And to have my wee little ghost story from
@lunatefiction
be an honorable mention! Thank you so much!
💖💖💖
Hi, y'all. Been taking a wee break to deal with some personal stuff that has been pretty hard, but I'm so honored and grateful to be part of the first issue of
@TruffleLitMag
with a story about birds who used to be children:
I don't usually announce this kind of thing 'cause it makes me shy, but
THANK YOU
@Wigleaf
for my
@PushcartPrize
nomination for Where the Drowned Ride!!!
Because you all know I've been having a hard time. I'm so grateful for this. 💖💖💖
What kind of stories are hard sells for you? Like, no matter how good they are, the topic/characters/whatever just don't sing to you?
For me, it's the "seeking my birth parents to understand myself" story. I'm adopted and I don't need to find my biological parents to know myself!
This spring, the day after I found out Kira had been murdered, I woke up to the sound of birdsong outside my window.
Thank you so very much,
@lumierereview
, for making a home for this story about a girl I knew. 💖
I know I should just be grateful to HAVE a job right now, but work today has been miserable and I am deeply unhappy and tired of men being condescending and rude to me when I am trying to explain something.
My boss at the comic book store offered to carry a few copies of my book and he just texted me to say that two have already sold and that is really wonderful news and I am so lucky to have such a great boss! 💖💖💖
Hi, folks! We have a very last day of AWP 2023 Special Edition Newsletter with a very special announcement! So be sure to check it out!
#flashfiction
#shortstory
So, hey! I'm the writer of the month at
@DrunkMonkeysWeb
, which is way better than when I was employee of the month at Wendy's.
Also, I have five new stories there, because I maybe write too damn many things. 💖💖💖
Alright our EIC got distracted by some hullabaloo but guess what! Our December issue is here. We've got work by Adrien Kade Sdao, Ashley Miranda, Kimberly Justice, Writer of the Month Cathy Ulrich, staff writers Jeanne Obbard, Gabriel Ricard, and more:
Thank you to everyone who has reached out to me! I am doing okay! Last weekend, something horrible happened to someone I know and, while it's not the sort of thing that can be fixed or get better, I am handling it, and everyone's kindness has meant so much. Thank you! 💖💖💖
Oh, hey! I have two astronaut love stories up in
@SundogLit
today! One has a pizza place with a pipe organ and the other has balloons and a quinceañera and I hope you will like them! 💖
Hi, all! We've finally got a cover art reveal for
@loki_writes
's SMALL, BURNING THINGS, a truly amazing second story collection. Art by the brilliant Sarah Shields, a perfect compliment to the cover of GHOSTS OF YOU. Pre-order the book here:
