With the rise of both partisanship and AI, the quest for truth and insight is more elusive than ever. The future of downtowns has been a potent reminder of how much we need nonpartisan, nonpaywalled thinking on timely issues and
@BrookingsInst
is here for it.
There is no going back in time for America’s downtowns. They will need to adapt to remain relevant.
@lohplaces
and
@hannamlove
present 7 ways downtowns can rebuild through shared prosperity.
A huge majority (61/90) of those who died on the street in DC this year had a housing voucher but no placement to use it. Until we acknowledge our housing policy is broken, not just our homelessness policy, we can never repair. 💔
This is a list of the 90 people who died without housing in
#WashingtonDC
.
The same DC where
@POTUS
lives. The same DC where Congress meets. The same DC with a $19+ billion budget.
The people making these decisions all drive, everywhere. Their “data” are what a friend from Potomac says.
They are, bluntly, out of touch. DC’s value proposition is as a dense, walkable, bikeable place. We can never out-compete the suburbs at their game, we must play ours.
I dug into the battle brewing over bike lanes in DC
Business and real estate leaders are fighting back against projects on K Street and Connecticut Ave., worried they could worsen traffic and hurt the downtown economy.
DC officials have begun to respond:
I hear complaints sometimes that

's operating costs are too high relative to peers, but this seems like a good day to point out that many of those peers do not have air conditioning in any of their stations. I realize it's an expense but I'm very grateful we do.
Today was way too hot 🥵. While overall
@wmata
service was good we had several 🚇 issues that caused disruptions. Sorry to those impacted, we are working hard to keep things moving. I want to thx the
#wmata
team out there in these very hot conditions serving the region! Stay ❄️
🙏 As I ride home and listen to the happy sounds of a daddy and his baby watching the stations go by, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the
@wmata
team who put themselves on the line for all our safety every day, and grief for the loss of Robert Cunningham, may he rest in peace.
I would love to see this level of federal outrage and oversight over transit service, which is far more essential every day and gets disrupted for ridiculous, indefensible nonsense on a regular basis.

Fun fact: operating in ADO is not only safer and more reliable, it's also cheaper bc it reduces dwell time at platforms so much that
@wmata
can actually adjust the train schedule. Returning to full ATO will bring even greater operational savings + safety and reliability returns.
Good news, Metrorail riders! Auto Doors is now in operation on ALL rail lines! Customers will notice faster entries and exits with doors opening within 3-5 seconds after the train stops on the station platform.

(4/5) I'm totally shaken. I want to live in a world where I can bike on neighborhood streets with my daughter and not be subject to vehicular terrorism or racism. The evidence from this week is ample that this isn't the world we live in.
There is no universe in which trying to offer an easy commute for solo drivers in the future of downtowns. This piece shows a basic failure to understand facts.
Only 0.7% of commuters cycle to work in the region, data show. So why is DDOT replacing car lanes with traffic lanes on Connecticut Avenue, our columnist wonders.
I am excited and honored to be nominated, and humbled to receive the council's consideration to represent the District's interests on the

@ChmnMendelson

I picked up a cracked clip that had been replaced and brought it back to my desk as a reminder of the importance of capital planning.
I’m honored to be part of Team DC and the whole
@wmata
board. It’s a daunting job to communicate the big picture. Hope these little ones help.
I saw Metrorail’s signal system. It’s so old it’s time to start worrying about availability of parts. Other systems worldwide are moving to digital systems. But the capital cost to modernize is in the billions. Our region needs a plan to fund this over some time period.
She's wrong.
Making the bus free in
#DC

*more* revenue, has less admin burden than her hypothetical "give money directly to low-income people," and boosts bus reliability.
We are entering a golden age for abundant green mobility in the District.
If you are on

Metro bus or rail, and you see something scary/illegal, you can send a text to the transit police at 696873.
Program this in your phone.
If you text, include the 4-digit number that IDs each railcar (above doors) or bus (windshield). Pics ok too, no video.
A shiny ball?
Our streets are choked with traffic.
They are red with our blood, & our children’s blood.
I walked 6 blocks downtown yesterday, lost count of the # of giant cars that tried to run me over.
I don’t want a new toy. I want my city, the heart of my region, to live.
Congestion pricing is the shiny ball pseudo new urbanists cannot look away from.
Even tho we already: raise nearly 1bil over 4yrs w/traffic cameras, charge 18% private prking tax dedicated to METRO, have dynamic pricing for meters and vision zero to slow traffic.
@AdamTuss
@DDOTDC
This hurts to hear. I was almost killed after being hit by a minivan driver on CT Ave while I was biking home from work in 2008. Our community should be putting safety first.
Today i submitted video testimony to

Let’s be clear. First, this is not a 70% reduction in fare evasion. It’s a 70% reduction in the RATE of evasion. Some of this likely from non-tap converting to tap, but also some non-tap converting to non-ride.
In short, no one should expect $40m increase in revenue from this.
And here are the numbers that Metro just released on fare evasion reduction with the installation of these new faregates. A 70 to almost 85 percent reduction in fare evasion!

“nearly three-fourths of crashes on Connecticut Avenue occur when it is already in a four-lane-with-two-parking-lanes setup. DDOT’s revised Concept C will make this configuration—in which most crashes already occur—permanent.”

Water intrusion is a major safety issue as it can interfere with critical systems. The tunnels have never been dry. Perfection is impossible and it’s a risk to manage.
@wmata

I very much appreciate everyone who has reached out to encourage me to run to represent Ward 3 on the DC Council. It's not the right time since I am focused on representing the District on the

At

All the cables and wires running through the system are not just to control trains.

Silver Line BRT from the airport to the Red Line train. A plus of Boston is that it really does feel like everyone uses transit - huge age, race, class diversity of passengers. I think if headways were half what they are now ridership would explode.
ALERT: As part of the investigation into the Blue Line derailment, Metro is holding out of service all of its 7000-series railcars, which is about 60% of its rail fleet. Without these rail cars, Metro will operate about 40 trains tomorrow. 1/2

Cities and suburbs all over the country are having a 21st century reckoning with segregationist policies from the 20th, at the same time as confronting a scarcity-driven housing crisis. A complex web of racial and economic issues makes it hard to distill the underlying truths.
Desperately need a DC beat reporter to dig into the trivia cheating scandal currently rocking Red Bear Brewing — where it was heavily implied that reigning champions (who have won four straight weeks) were caught cheating, including by using a Shazam-enabled Apple Watch.

The truth: “people know when they’re wanted as opposed to just needed.”
The replies in this thread from all across the political spectrum about how 150 sq ft per person is inhuman are telling on themselves super loud that they don’t know that’s how the vast majority of the world, including many happy and comfortable people, live.
One of the biggest drivers of unaffordability is minimum unit sizes.
A 100-150sf SRO can comfortably fit all of one's needs (bed, kitchenette, bathroom, even a desk!). When we mandate a 400sf minimum, a common threshold, we're getting 3-4x less homes in the same amount of space!

What's fascinating about this idea is that proponents outright say that a historic district is a "powerful, legal tool at our disposal to protect our treasured 'small town' commercial area." It sounds like it's less about history and more about additional veto power.

Sharing three tips from my husband after this incident I wish Id thought of:
- record instead of screaming back
- license plate
- speak to the passenger instead of the driver (eg “are you ok with this? Do you feel safe?”)
In housing policy discussions, the conversations can quickly get bogged down in jargon and theories.
But under it all there is a simple truth.
Diverse neighborhoods are made of diverse housing.
Really joyful to preview the fleet of the future with
@wmata
today. One of those moments where I ponder the little ways in which maybe my service has maybe made a difference. I’ve taken a super hard look at the data and I see a bright future for transit - evolved, but relevant.

➡️It's combined w/more🟢trains, so🟢will still get same service
➡️A LOT more trains! For the first time ever,🟢and🔴will have same service level

It’s hard to believe it’s only been two years since I joined the

Even bigger and better things are possible. I’m hopeful.
I despise the framing of pieces like this (whether about DC, NYC, or elsewhere) because they are so transparently an attempt to rationalize redeploying the strategies that worked in the ‘90s.
Why is it so hard to move learning outside? We need to take a hard look at who is designing our built environment, and who they are designing for. What if our cities actually looked like we loved children?

There are very few rich people. To maintain neighborhoods served by public infrastructure just for them is incredibly environmentally inefficient, and consumes the public resources that are needed for the 'education' and 'opportunity' the poster is 'advocating' for.
