@AlecStapp It's worth thinking about what this means in absolute terms. By expressing this in shares, it doesn't illustrate the actual extent to which the purchasing power of these groups changed. 12% of a little is still only a little, and 1% of an enormous amount is still a lot.

Here's a couple of figures from @DC_OCFO that caught my eye. Downtown DC is critical to the city's tax base in two ways: 1) directly through office property tax; 2) indirectly through the value of the denser residential tax base that clusters around it.
