Hello new followers 👋👋👋
I tweet about design systems and tooling, new media, cities, and social justice with varying levels of sincerity
My ""day job"" is on the design systems team at Uber
I am also not a penguin :)
2012: I wanna make cool shit with my friends
2014: I wanna be a software engineer
2016: I wanna be a product designer
2018: "my practice melds art and technology into an all-encompassing,,,state of being"
2020: I wanna make cool shit with my friends
day 2 of not working at Uber and it 🥺feels 🥺 so 🥺 good
trying to regain control of how I see myself instead of what the job progression ladder wants me to be
the year is 2016. you just matched with a product designer at Facebook. y'all are meeting at a local natives concert, and afterwards you're gonna cuddle on his mattress without a bedframe. life is good
it's not perfect but it's here!! i've refreshed with my zines + side projects i've worked on over the years. excited to have an online presence again :)
bittersweet last day
@DesigningUber
next stop, i'm linking up with some of the best + most gracious in the biz to help build
@ourZORA
and building a little "office in the internet" in sunny los angeles, ca

taking a cursory glance at linkedin, the team who developed this iowa caucus app is a CTO, a PM, a designer, two junior web devs, and a backend INTERN. this is who i'd hire for a dog-walking app not to like, uphold democracy or anything lol
sf has some of the most entitled residents on the planet.
it's really frustrating to hear people talk about the justice system only in terms of crime and arrest rates and not about the welfare of the people behind them
was so much fun meeting folks at config yesterday ✨
yesterday, my team
@designingUber
released a design kit for y'all to use to own liking. take a peek at it on Figma communities ⤵️
don't overthink a pivot to crypto, tbh I don't care if it's the "next big thing" or whatever but it's genuinely the most fun, most colorful tech subculture that exists today
today I came to the realization that....this year.....is the golden year for designers who code.
people who know how to write software to augment the creative process and/or to create art: now is your time to shine
i've spent my very short career yearning for this moment
dunno who needs to hear this but: quit your job. move to that city. cut off that toxic relationship, or shoot your shot with someone you like.
give yourself the latitude to grow, you deserve it
good morning.
here are my personal thoughts on 👁️👄👁️, and where we go from here.
but first, I'd like to recommend five excellent causes. three are local to the Bay Area, and the other two are in Detroit
if you haven't opened your wallet yet, here's your chance
just about every junior WOC in tech i've met suffers from crippling imposter syndrome
if you work closely with them and they're not vocal about it to you, rethink your actions
please remember to give them their flowers, i promise it will pay off tenfold
i feel insane that everyone (including me) is trying to further their careers while a virus that has unknown long term effects rages on wtf are we even doing
- your zorb will show up on as your default avatar, even if you don't own a zorb NFT.
@ourZORA
aggregates on chain activity, and it's a simple way to provide a face to many wallets
- intent is to open source the zorb components & make the viewer super sick
i wouldn't be surprised if FB justified the new instagram update internally by making the two apps "share a common navigational hierarchy and visual language"
problem is, the last thing any IG user wants is for their app to look and feel "more like Facebook"
simone biles is a trailblazer. naomi osaka too. the world is ending and we're all working 60 hours a week. on the long, lonely quest to "do what you love" to find fulfillment, a capitalist nirvana. i'm fucking tired
while im being absolutely fucking unhinged on here i feel like i'm 90% of the engineer I can be (which is honestly a really low ceiling tbh) and like 30% of the designer I can be. it's really hard to find people who understand and encourage me to grow a hybrid skillset
massive difference between "my ego got too big for corporate america so i'm doing my own thing" and "i'm tired of being belittled and talked down upon so i'm doing my own thing"
Concept: a friend office.
Get group of friends who all have remote jobs. Move somewhere nice and inexpensive.
Rent a cheap, convenient office space together. Work at different companies but together.
Perks of social interaction, hanging with friends, but cheaper!
having more than 1k on twitter is tough went from being able to say the most inane shit on an edible to being afraid of beaming a photo of ice cream out into the world in fear of the replies

@ourZORA
editions is out, here are some microconcepts that died on the cutting board.
Prototypes and explorations are meant to be just that—to test a hypothesis then throw away. The learnings from each creation help inform the direction of the final product.
social media becomes uninteresting when the pressure to maintain a facade to an audience > the frontier of self-discovery
this is also why FB/IG ruins everything they touch
the nft bubble collapses as soon as its "cool factor" runs out
connecting w/ audience = cool
supporting your friends & talented creators = cool
promoting self-expression = cool
naked cash grab = not cool
speculative investment = not cool
locking regular people out = not cool
very excited to reveal a website
@shampliu
and I have been working on 👀
i've always held a belief that design technologists get shit done™ in ways a traditional design<>dev team can't. thank you to the
@ourZORA
and
@iamsound
teams for your trust in our vision
Gen Z culture **is** black culture. if you profit off Gen Z culture in any way—whether that be making products, building brands, or running consultancies, and you're not speaking about the urgency of this moment, you can fuck right off.
not naming names but you know who you are
