Update on the fraudulent takedowns of the TUNIC & Dustforce OSTs: We're still waiting to hear back from our counternotice. We received a 2nd threat to take down our remaining music. We're worried our distributor @Distrokid won't protect us from new attacks, but will even ban us:

Recently I received a threat on Messenger from a random person, saying they would take down my music. They made a simple DMCA claim and now everything's being removed from all streaming services. Janice and I are working hard to get things back online, but no definite answers yet

The TUNIC OST (and others) are back online! The weeks of musicless uncertainty were worrisome. @alsojanice and I were lucky to have everyones patience & support. We want to show our thanks by releasing for free some of our initial piano concepts for TUNIC:

After 7 years, the TUNIC soundtrack is complete. I co-composed it with Janice Kwan @alsojanice , and we're excited to finally share it with everyone. It's 60 tracks and 3 hours long! It'll release March 16, but you can pre-order it now and hear some tracks:

They simply had to send an email to Apple Music with no proof, and the entire network of streaming services will instantly remove the music, block the royalties, and "flag my account". The onus is on me to prove that I am the owner, and they have no obligation to listen to me.

Anyone, anywhere in the world, can do this to any music that is not from the big labels, who are specially whitelisted from these problems (and who made these laws in the first place).

Everyone already knows that the DMCA laws are deeply flawed and disproportionately benefit large corporations. Then why do distributors and streaming services not at the very least offer the most basic protections against these low effort attacks?

We're hoping not just to get our music back, but that @distokid and other services can offer protections against these kinds of attacks in the near future for artists everywhere.

Even if we get our music back online, there are no protections against another attack. Janice and I work hard every day to make new music and games that we hope to share soon but we rely on the streaming income to do that.

The most challenging track for @alsojanice and I was the main theme, To Far Shores. Making it was arduous, with over a hundred internal tracks, and we worked on it over 2 months. But the biggest challenge was learning how to untangle our conflicted feelings of creative ownership.

when working on tunic, janice recorded a lot of sounds of daily life in taipei and turned them into instruments for the soundtrack. afterwards, she made a new album using those techniques, almost made entirely out of those recordings and new ones:

Part of Janice’s composing process is sketching out concepts on piano. I really like the way she brought a classical feel to the soundtrack and the character it adds to the boss fights.

We get this question a lot but you may be surprised that Janice wrote Arcane Arcade and hasn't heard the Fez OST yet. I think the soundtracks to Fez, Dustforce and other games are part of a broader "hi-fi square wave sound" that has been popular in the 2010's.

@lifeformed considering the many similarities between the games (down to the album art), was there any inspiration from fez while composing (beyond arcane arcade, at least)? (also redwood colonade is one of my favorite songs of all time, thank you for creating such a masterpiece!!!)

We didn't use too many synths for the pads - our general process was to record samples of interesting sounds we'd come across (or even of other tracks), and then chop them up and layer them, and play around with various samplers, granulators, effects, etc.

@lifeformed One of the things that stuck out the most to me was the ambient pads in the OST, how did you make them? What VSTs/synths did you use ? Was there any insperation for them?

We used to have a lot of tools, but over the years we gradually minimized our setup, partly due to traveling a lot, but mostly just enjoying the way a minimal setup makes it easy to collaborate and jump into the flow when inspiration strikes

I love the Fez OST though. There was a time in TUNIC I remember being explicitly influenced by it. I really liked the warbley sounds of the synths in Fez, and I had that in mind when I made Snowmelt:

For example, to make the first minute of Subterra, I played hundreds of variations of some chords on a ukulele and recorded them. Then I layered them together and chopped them up every way I could think of, and glued them together with various effects:

Remember to Remember and Forget to Forget came much later - we wanted to have tracks that could seamlessly crossfade when going to the West Overworld and into indoor areas. In Forget to Forget, during that breakdown, the melody is played by a cool bird we recorded in Taipei 🐦

@alsojanice 99% of the time, we are pretty much in sync and find a good balance playing to each others' strengths. But this was the main theme and we each had so many personal ideas of how it should be.

@TomasPalazzi I use separate reverb on each element so I can fine tune them, and I try to keep their main freqs distinct from other things. I also like to use sidechain compression to "cut through" the reverb tails. Also a bunch of manual automation edits can be very effective, albeit tedious
