I’ve led union protests of 200,000 workers. Our rallies look like this. Diverse, beautiful, passionate and peaceful. That’s not what is happening in the city right now. This is a mob looking for a fight. It’s not solidarity, it’s selfishness and it’s definitely not union.

8mths no parole for blocking a road. The protest would have annoyed people getting to work but I wouldn’t have thought anyone in those cars would have wanted this person to serve jail time in NSW. Protest rights are human rights and this is a radically excessive punishment.

Restaurateur Chris Lucas, who owns city eatery Chin Chin, said the grants of up to $30,000 were a “drop in the ocean” for some businesses. That’s probably true for his businesses that in one year stole $340,000 of workers wages.

Bumped into some guys cutting compressed stone for a kitchen in my neighbourhood. No masks. No wetting down. I had a chat to them. They were subcontractors, paid very little. No one told them the dangers. But someone at the other end of the contract is making a lot of money.

Victoria’s wage theft law just passed the Parliament. This law is about workers getting the pay they earned. If your boss steals from you, they can now be held to account, fined and jailed. Well done to every unionist & worker who campaigned, told their story & stood up.

On this day in 1856, stonemasons walked off the job to protest their long working days. They won a world first, the 8hr day. In 2021, too many of us work long days & nights, spending recreation time replying to emails, extending the work day. It’s time we got our hrs back.

1 important lockdown lesson from Victoria. Pay workers to get tested ($450) & to isolate ($1500). For many families the cost of losing shifts is scary when u have no cash reserves. As a union movement we pushed for this b/c it takes away the financial stress of testing +ve.

Thank a unionist for a Labour Day public holiday. On April 21 1856, stonemasons downed tools at Melb Uni and marched for an 8hr day without the loss of pay. We were the first place to win and keep this. The 8hr day is one of our great contributions to the world.
