Let's clarify some facts about Chief Armstrong's firing and lawsuit.
I've heard people who should know better say the Mayor had to fire him because he publicly criticized her.
He never criticized Mayor Thao until after he was fired.

Get angry but not at the woman.
Get angry at local and state elected officials who failed to provide safety for all of us.
People fall back on racial profiling, buying guns etc when they canโt rely on government to protect them.
What a strange, angry, inappropriate public response to the FBI, IRS, and USPS raid from Mayor Thao this morning.
Instead of simply stating her innocence, she attacked the FBI, hinting at dark forces behind the raid.
She launched into a riff about how the Feds haven't gone
This Sunday talked with a late 30's mom born and raised in Oakland. Lives in Temescal near me. She was describing how some of her neighbors are White techies of about her age who moved to Temescal within the last several years, oppose the recall of Price and Thao, and are

The volunteer signature collections at the Oakland Grand Lake Farmer's Market and the Montclair Farmer's Market were extraordinarily successful. Temescal did fine too despite the rain.

Between rampant shoplifting and online competition, it's a miracle there are still any retail stores in Oakland.

Oakland faces a massive budget deficit for the current and foreseeable future. Mayor Thao, former Mayor Schaaf, and the entire Council are jointly and severally responsible for our dire financial condition. Yes, the roots go back to the early 2000s, when voters retroactively
Oakland "progressives" are adjusting their arguments against spending more on policing from their usual "we can't police our way out of crime because we must first fix underlying causes of crime" and "studies show that more police won't reduce crime."

Recalling Mayor Thao.
Looking at the recent small poll, Mayor Thao is much more unpopular than I expected.
I'm not going to organize it, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a grassroots effort to recall Mayor Thao.
Recalling "progressive" Council members would improve
I still read and hear people bitching about how the recall election of DA Price will cost as much as 20 million dollars.

Wierd coming from me, but I feel a little sorry for Mayor Thao.
Who talked her into running for Mayor?
Who put her into a job she was grossly unprepared for?
Bas and Fife and Kaplan?
Did they think they could simply coach her on how to fake it?
Until now, I've never envied SF.
They have a mayor who is several orders of magnitude more competent than ours.
While our mayor is busy blathering about how public safety is her number one priority and how she will harness tech to help policing, Mayor Breed is taking action.
Was California and the Bay Area just lucky that Texas didn't send thousands of immigrants here? Oakland and SF city services would have crashed and burned.
Gotta smile when I hear Oakland "progressives" happy that rich people and highly profitable businesses are leaving CA. As if that will magically lower the cost of housing etc here .
Not a worry about who's going to pay for the educational system and the social services for all

Every time Oakland verges on fiscal meltdown, there's someone blaming it on Prop 13.

Welcome to Oakland's "progressive" politics. Residents assume the people they've elected as Mayor and most of the Council members think like most residents.

It now goes to the AC Board of Supervisors for certification and presumedly for setting an election date.
Update on DA Pamela Price recall.
No change since last reported because the Alameda County Registrar of Voters (ROV) is repeating its slo-mo tactic of running out the ten calendar day clock with petty formatting changes that could be checked in an hour.

It's going to be interesting when DA Price's charging policies collide with the state prosecutors' actions. Will Bonta overrule Price?
When a candidate for office in Alameda County tells you that public safety is their highest priority, ask them if they support the recall of DA Price;
If they say no or equivocate, their priority is just election-polling-driven motherhood and apple pie.
Put in 3 hours today at Temescal Farmer's Market answering questions about the DA Price recall. Mostly people came to me, but I also hit up people walking past.
Remarkably few people flat-out opposed the recall. And a good 30% didn't even know anything about it.

No one likes recalls. But sometimes theyโre necessary as they are in this situation. People elected a cop hater, not a cop skeptic, as a DA who has to work closely with police. They elected someone with 0 experience managing a large staff and who already has shown poor judgement
At the Montclair meeting, DA Price flat-out lied when she said she did not have a policy on charging arrested people.
The reporter/editor of the Berkeley Scanner caught that lie in her recap of the meeting. Apparently, none of the audience did. You know Dan Kalb wouldn't say boo.

Hey, maybe she's innocent and it's her partner, Andre, who's the target. We don't know. But to attack the Feds and question why they didn't warn her ahead of time or politely request documents, cell phones, computers, etc, is profoundly ignorant of the investigatory process.

Some of them must be hearing a tiny voice in their heads saying they bet on the wrong horses.

Just got back from the Safeway at Claremont and College. Two collectors there said people have been coming up to them asking to sign the Mayor Thao recall.
The collectors aren't seeing any pattern to the signers: young, old, race, sex.
I envy Oakland "progressives" who post to social media. All they have to do is copy and paste a few variations of the mantra about how "studies show policing can't reduce crime and DA charging has no effect on crime. W. have to reduce economic inequality and homelessness. "
I'm not rushing to judgment about Mayor Thao or any other Oakland politician's relationship with the Duongs.
