I really want to see every corps move to one free day a week during spring training and multiple during tour next season. It is very clear that treating your members like people and giving them recovery time leads to performing better yet so many corps still deny performers rest.
Thoughts and prayers for all the World Class staff trying to process the news of Biden dropping out while three margaritas deep at the San Antonio River Walk
1) wasting water to quell student dissent in Arizona is a bonkers decision
2) this wave of protests is really showcasing the versatility of the water cooler jug
If you aged out at a top 6 corps and got a job at the same or another top 6 corps immediately after aging out you are the drum corps equivalent of a nepo baby send tweet
It was sweet of Scouts to have the Cadets shako & jacket, especially in Allentown, but I wish people cared this much when non-finalist corps folded. Open Class has 10 corps competing in their prelims this year. That should upset you if you care about the future of this activity.
I wrote a whole term paper on how Canada puts white women in specific positions of power to deflect all criticisms of them upholding Canada as a white-supremacist petrostate as misogyny while maintaining Canada's guise as a "progressive" country. I am proven right every time.
I'm baffled at how many comments I'm seeing about how The Garden of Love is "usual trippy Bluecoats" and they "don't get it" because this show seems so clear to me. To me, this show in context of when and where it's being performed, is about the queer fight against oppression.
Much love to the many Cadets in my life. I am not happy to see corps fold but you don't get to simultaneously claim all the history and victory of the Cadets while washing your hands clean of the abuse that happened [thread, read more]
With extreme sadness, today we announce that Cadets Arts & Entertainment has filed for bankruptcy, bringing The Cadets to an end. Our Board deeply empathizes with the alumni, staff, donors, parents, and volunteers whose hearts are broken by this news.
I cannot stress enough how every corps should be tracking trans/gender expression legislation in the states they will be travelling through. There will be states where your trans students cannot safely go to a doctor or use a public bathroom.
Ontario: Uni/college students are working 2+ jobs and barely making ends meet, teachers are ready to strike, social workers are being laid off, people can't afford rent, shelters are closing, people will literally die in the streets this winter
The Ford government:
We know winter is coming but let’s look forward to next summer! Our Government has announced new measures to allow business owners the right to allow dogs on restaurant patios.
We're so excited to be performing at Stark Pride Festival this year! 🤩 🏳️🌈
A small ensemble of Bluecoats trumpets and colorguard performers will come to the event, playing and marching in the pride walk and on the main
@Canton100Plaza
stage!
I know everyone is fixated on GH making appearances this season but I don't want to overlook that Roman Blenski, former Pioneer director, was also in the Lucas Oil tunnel with his VIP Hall of Fame pass. You shouldn't be able to neglect youth like that and be welcomed back.
I know critically thinking about gender is not something they're into but Sara introduces themself with their pronouns in this video and whoever posted still messed it up lmao
The gender-marginalized drum corps community members thank you for continuing to give us nothing 🫡
One of my least-liked design elements of suburban design is this inaccessible landing I see in foyers.
Any creative solutions for "staging" it out there?
Sometimes I think I miss being in undergrad but I know I really just miss being walking distance from most of my friends and feeling like my life still had potential
"We're so excited to announce our 2022 perc/brass/vis staff! These educators are dedicated to improving the lives of youth through performing arts. They are truly the best we could find (on our contacts list). We care about diversity so one of these guys is gay AND a bottom."
Disliking that the Cavaliers are an all-male corps is not misandry. It's genuinely archaic to have single-gender corps in general. I wouldn't support an all-female corps either. All a single gender corps ultimately does is marginalize the trans community.
bent leg marching technique is inherently contrarian, and despite any and all conversion efforts, ensembles eventually return to extended leg technique
This group asked me to be a mod to help deal with sexual objectification/harassment in the group. Yesterday I was harassed for asking a man to edit a comment that came off as objectifying. The response from DCF admin was remove me as a mod and remove people for asking why. Thread
I do not think we should continue to have a show in Murfreesboro. You can tell me I'm overreacting if you want but personally I would rather not have a show there than chance something happening because two gay teens decided to make out beside the Subway
A city in Tennessee has banned being gay in public.
Murfreesboro, Tennessee passed an ordinance claiming that “acts of” being “homosexual” is considered “sexual conduct” and may no longer be seen in public. The law is also now being used to ban books.
I guess I have to admire the confidence it takes to post about how paying $5000+ for drum corps is great value because needs are always met while being staff at a corps that is returning from being forced to take a year off due to traumatizing children
If Bloo is going to bear the brunt of anti-queer sentiments in the activity we should lean into it. Let's bring the whole corps to Pride. Let's make Fruitcoats a SoundSport ensemble. Everyone has to submit a video essay on Queer Anti-Capitalism (Sears, 2005) with their audition.
Seeing a lot of band directors say they want equal treatment because football is allowed to happen while band isn't. I get the frustration but it's a weird thought process to look at a COVID-unsafe activity happening and be like "I also want to put my kids at risk."
Scouts alum: I appreciate you vocally supporting survivors instead of closing ranks. This kind of news is hard for the whole community, especially those who have been harmed before. Lean on each other for support & always feel free to reach out to MAASIN if you need more 💚⚜️💖
I don't agree with gender exclusivity but I'm not mad at people who want to be in an all-female corps if the Cavaliers is going to exist because the drive for being in an all-female corps is different than that of an all-male corps. Politically, those are different entities.
It's always "it's so sad [Open Class corps] is folding DCI needs to promote Open Class more" and never watching Open Class corps perform, donating, volunteering, getting their merch, or sharing posts outside of folding announcements. Okay.
Personality test: you're marching Oregon Crusaders '18 and your lunch options are one (1) gogurt, one (1) cheese string, or one (1) hardboiled egg. Which do you choose?
I would really love if marching arts circuits could stop the fired-from-staffing-for-child-molesting to judging shows pipeline. I don't care that they're not in contact with members that much. Why would you want them around at all? Simply have one (1) critical thought
Good morning I'm thinking about how the touring model of drum corps ultimately depends on the labour of hundreds of women who are partners of the majority male staff to take care of their kids and the house while they're away
If your response to a teen girl going public about her traumatic summer experience is to victim-blame, accuse her of lying for clout, or think she's just being negative about the activity I am begging you to go to therapy instead.
Modern demands of the activity and the current economic situation create a hostile environment for corps, even the top 6, to operate in. We need to radically rethink what the tour component looks like and accept that it can't be as big anymore. It's completely unsustainable.
“While we are disappointed by the loss of a storied DCI World Class corps from the tour in 2023, we unquestionably respect their decision to best address the current needs of their organization."

@scvanguard
I think if you smoked a lot of weed but registered as an organ donor that when you die and doctors go to take your lungs after they have to crack the bong resin in them like crème brûlée
If your corps identity is based on upholding some outdated idea of masculinity in a predominantly male activity perhaps it's time to get a new schtick. Is it not embarrassing to be the last all-male corps? Do you not find it silly? Or do you just know men are less likely to talk?
This sucks. I am so sorry to everyone who was planning on spending the season with Cascades. Running a drum corps in the PNW is such a challenge. I hope they're able to come back stronger in 2023.
She gave him an incredible amount of grace in that moment. Really nice of her considering she's obviously the first woman that guy has met besides his mom.
It has been 5 years since the sexual assault allegations against George Hopkins became public. We've made progress setting up avenues for people to report misconduct. What we need to work on now is building a culture that meets survivors with support instead of suspicion.
The Cadets are among the world's best drum corps, and their director George Hopkins is a big reason why. Now nine women have told me he sexually harassed or abused them.
"We're so excited to announce our 2022 perc/brass/vis staff! These educators are dedicated to improving the lives of youth through performing arts. They are truly the best we could find (on our contacts list). We care about diversity so one of these guys is gay AND a bottom."
I hope everyone auditioning this weekend has a good time! Remember not every corps is right for every person so like picking a college it's important to see which is the best fit for you. This means asking yourself the following questions: [big thread]
If I knew today would be the day US Customs & Border Protection would question why I'm back and forth so much, not like band as an answer, fingerprint me, and take me to secondary processing for questions then maybe I would have worn something more serious than my Kum & Go shirt
It's nice to hear about good drum corps experiences but consider this public notice that many of these "I'm so glad to march [insert corps] because nothing bad happens at [insert corps]" will age very poorly in the coming months. Perhaps reconsider.
The person at fault for the organization folding is never the survivor. This is the natural consequence of having a board and admin who chose pride and perceived profits over the people the organization is built on.
"We need to stop dating/having sex with conservative/republican men as protest for Roe v. Wade being overturned!!"
There is a lot to unpack there but I do not think your politics are as solid as you think they are if you were dating and having sex with them in the first place
We have reached my favourite part of the season which is "people who only know me from the internet finding me at shows." Last night someone gave me these incredibly cute trans pride stickers and nonb(ari)inary stickers. They also gave me a contra(ns) sticker (not pictured) 🏳️⚧️ 💗
Like Tony I am also not trying to dunk on Troop nor do I want to get into AI ethics discourse (at least not today). I just want to remind everyone that there are lots of talented artists in our community who would be stoked to make show announcement graphics. Ask them!
PSA: the Women+ of Drum Corps Facebook group is now explicitly open to trans men and was always open to trans women and nonbinary people. There are also new explicit rules around no bigotry and no victim/survivor blaming. DM me for a join link and tell your friends.
Congrats! Surely Stephanie has accessed educational resources & critically thought about her actions at Phantom Regiment which led a non-binary member to end their age-out after being dismissed when demanding basic respect by asking not to be threatened with deadnaming, right?
In all seriousness though please don't march a corps that either knowingly hired a sexual predator or didn't do any sort of background checking. Corps that don't take safety seriously don't deserve members.
After over an hour discussing my various dissertation ideas with my supervisor we concluded that my best path forward is an exploration of queer joy and liberatory space in the context of drum corps so my joke of getting a PhD in gay marching band is now a reality thank you
A World Class director posted transphobic bad takes on his public Facebook account and that's not going to be seen as a problem but letting trans people know they likely won't be safe at an organization because transphobes work there is seen as "trash talking" got it
What really kills me about this is when people say "they just need education" when MAASIN offers a queer inclusion workshop with a whole section on trans identity FOR FREE and only 2 DCI corps have taken us up on going through it/sections of it. The resources are there, use them!
We released a statement on these events 7 months ago. At the time, Percy wished to be anonymous but has now chosen to publicly share their experience. Pride merch is cute and fun but not good LGBTQIA+ allyship. Ensuring your LGBTQIA+ members are safe & supported is.
Every year I hope to retire this image. Alas, the staff announcements have made it impossible for 2025. I will keep my post and remain vigilant for 2026 🫡
Gaslighting my entire workplace into thinking I was working from home for a month while I was actually in Indiana at Bluecoats spring training is among the funniest things I've ever done
Members are collecting donations to feed themselves & this week MAASIN had to pay for someone's plane ticket to rejoin and finish their season after recovering from COVID because the corps made them pay for their own quarantine. Totally cool and normal youth activity we have here
So far writing about drum corps for a social work PhD has just shown me that all drum corps-related PTSD is heritage PTSD from some guy who came back from the trenches and started a drum corps instead of going to therapy
If they're charging thousands of dollars to march, they should get heatstroke. It seems like no one is willing to get off their ass and get heatstroke anymore. I hate when uniforms are easily washed and people don't smell like a pack of Slim Jims left in the sun after 2 shows.
Does anyone actually think the uniform on the right (bluecoats 2023) looks better than the one on the left (2014)? If they’re charging thousands of dollars to march, their marchers should at least get to wear a sharp uniform and not pajamas lol
Hello,
@McMasterU
. Based on her posts that are still up, I don't think Eva is sorry. According to LinkedIn she has been working at McMaster since 1993. You have let this Islamophobic racist interact with patients and educate future doctors for 30 years.
If we don't want marching arts to be used for white supremacist violence we need to care about the military history of our artform and what it means with the relationship between the military, imperialism, and white supremacy. This is why MAASIN has anti-imperialism as a stance.
Yes these are White Supremacists who are part of a mainly right-wing group called the Patriot Front, marching in Nashville, Tennessee today.
No, these are not FEDs or the FBI or the CIA. These are bad people.
Bad people actually do exist. There are horrible people, who are
