Kelly himself was Captain of the Bloody 10th regiment in Ohio in the American Civil War. Lost a part of his jaw and three teeth in a battle, and still didn't retire. He was one of the Irish rebels freed from prison in the lead-up to the execution of the Manchester Martyrs.
