So many conversations this evening were peppered with the words “we’re so lucky to work here”. Couldn’t agree more!
Consultancy Award winner is Prof. Lorraine Leeson

whose work highlights inequalities experienced by the international deaf community. Her consultancy work has focused on decreasing these inequalities through working with Government departments and policy-makers.
Feeling very humble as I embark on this journey as Assoc Vice-Provost for Equality, Diversity & Inclusion at

What an inspiring day!

And a few years later, in another inner-city school, my sister’s maths teacher telling her that just because she wanted to do honours maths didn’t mean she could- she was the only one in the school to do it that year. Now she’s an engineer.
What a great day! Having staff interpreters will be a game changer for

A very warm welcome to Bernadette Ferguson and Gemma Shannon our new staff IrishSignLanguage/English interpreters who joined us this morning. Watch out for more information about their work and how they can be booked in College!

Last Friday we marked the end of an era in my family. My last remaining grand-aunt was laid to rest. She was 95. She grew up in the same little house I did. The last of the 6 Fleming sisters, who always met up on a Tuesday, it was fitting that she left us on a Tuesday too.

Poem for the Blue Birdie
I miss the birdie, blue and sweet, who oversaw our urge to tweet. Unlike this stern 'aul grumpy 'X ' which makes me feel, well, rather vexed. My little request to those who have the knack is please bring the little birdie back...

a big shout out to all the women who have inspired, delighted, challenged, & help me grow. From my delightful little mammy to the many female relatives who shaped me & to the women I am fortunate to work with in academia and wider life.
On this day thirty years ago I started work as a house parent at St Joseph’s School for deaf boys, Cabra. That was a key milestone & I’m forever grateful to the boys I met for teaching me so much & grateful that some of you have remained lifelong friends.

Once upon a time I commuted between Brussels and Dublin on a weekly basis. Now I find myself treating a planned visit into the office like a long-haul trip. It seems SOOOO far. And takes up so much time!

I was delighted to participate in this challenge to create a “1-5” piece in ISL, where each handshape is used to tell a consecutive part of the storyline. 1-Shh! 2 - walk downstairs; 3- peeking to see what’s happening; 4 - open the door; 5- it’s Santa!!

Nope. It is not free! Was there in December and heading back this week. Have my STIB card loaded and ready to go. There was certainly discussion of making public transport free for under 25's - not sure if this was implemented.
This is SUCH an incredible opportunity.... until you realise it is UNPAID. How does this ensure that those from diverse backgrounds might engage with opportunities like this that will, given the TOR here, most likely, privilege those already holding privilege?

Until the 1990s, deaf children were encouraged to give up signing for Lent and sent to confession for using Irish Sign Language. The mapping of sign language use to “sin” had significant consequences…
Them: So, what’s your job?
Me: Sign Language Interpreter (among other things)
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it

Them: Oh! I thought you were a REAL interpreter...
This evening my car broke down at a roundabout here in Tyrrelstown & 4 lovely teenagers helped push me to a safe spot, got one of their dads, a mechanic, & figured out the problem. Just wanted to say how much I appreciated their assistance.

Geary you’re fantastic. You’re point that when people speak while they’re signing leads to incomplete information being articulated in Irish Sign Language was really well made.

Soft fruit jellies always remind me of my great-grandmother who we lived with when I was a small child. She passed away decades ago, in her mid 90s, but her birthday was 1st October & so I find myself thinking of her a lot this month. Definitely having a jelly to celebrate her!
