I deleted previous tweets for his safety, they reached a far bigger audience than I anticipated.
But we think it is important for the world to hear what is happening.
So, over the day, I will post several threads of his journal.

1/My husband is headed back to Gaza.
Hannah sent him with a bag of her clothes and Uggs. She bought small toys and a bag of Dum Dums for the children as well.
Additionally, he’s taking donated baby food, and a TON of surgical supplies and equipment that was donated.

My husband is a neurosurgeon and volunteered as part of the first US/Canadian group of physicians to go into Gaza on a medical mission.
He left on Dec 23rd and is on his way home.
He continues to hold the Gazans in his heart. I pray for an end to the decades long violence.

1/ Day 2 (Tuesday): crossed Rafah. Overwhelming welcome. Total devastation observed as we drove.
Sea of refugees & displaced families living in the premises of the 2 hospitals we visited.

1/ “Day 6 (Saturday): At 6am, we heard the loudest bomb since we got to Khan Younis. We thought it was one of the 2000 lb bombs that was dropped, but a few minutes later we found out it was a bomb fired on a neighbor only 200 yards away from the hospital.

April 18th 2021 I was in the ER and was told I had cancer.

After 5 months of chemo, 6 months of watchful waiting, I got a PET scan today and my oncologist says all is well and I just need routine symptom checks every few months.
Unbelievable relief.

2/ The problem is that no one, ambulance or injured person, can move & be transferred to the hospital until the morning. Moving during the night is a death sentence. Any moving object is completely annihilated.

The closure of Rafah crossing has led to a surge in fuel prices and severe restriction of the water supply in Gaza, as fuel is used for pumping water from wells, powering desalination systems, and transporting water to communities.

3/ So the injured have to stay where they are until 7-8am & then they are rescued if they’re still alive.
Because of that 80-90% of all the casualties arrive dead or almost dead (not salvageable).

4/ By sunset, the bombardment started & went on non-stop all night. So close, only 2 miles away. The first bombing was so violent, I fell off my step stool & the whole OR shook so badly. But we kept operating non-stop.

4/ We finished the scan & we were ready to rush him to the OR to fix him with oculoplastic surgery but the OR was full. During the waiting, his eye ruptured with a gush of blood & the kid coded.

6/ People live & sleep in the hallway of hospitals. As I made my way to lay down, I could not walk in the hallway as people are sleeping on the floor.
I finally fell asleep for 2 hours but woke up every up 5 minutes with the violent shaking of the hospital building.

Well, good news:
Pleural effusion is gone. All the lymph nodes that lit up in the chest and abdomen have completely resolved. The mass is much smaller than my last PET and less intense.
Overall, “very pleasing.”
Plan is for R CHOP on Friday.

9/ I decided I’d operate on both of them simultaneously in 1 room. We rushed them to the OR with the instrument table in the middle. I went to go scrub quickly but now there is no water; it’s been cut off. I had to use my drinking water bottle to at least wash my hands to scrub.

5/ This hospital has maximum capacity of 250 beds & once considered one of the best hospitals in Gaza. But now it has over 1200 pts all over the hospital inside & outside, in addition to 1000 people living in the hospital & 25000 in the premise of the hospital.

2/ The survivors were carrying the injured ones in pieces of cloth & rushing them to the ED. We received 11 injured ones. 5 died in ED, 3 were rushed to the OR for amputations of their lower extremities & 2 survived with minor injuries.

7/ The good thing is the family members are the ones who transport patients to different spots in the hospital, to get scans, or even take them to & from the OR unless they are intubated.

2/As we got closer to the crossing, miles & miles of 18-wheelers on 4 sides of the highway-the most inefficient way to transfer aid. Days to get food and supplies across. Sometimes 1-2 weeks. By the time the trucks cross the border, the food is spoiled.

I take care of people who have been shot on a regular basis. I have taken people to the operating room to try to repair the injuries bullets have caused. I have told families their loved one is dead.

2/ And compared to what he went through, it was nothing…but also, it was so hard.
It was hard to explain to our daughter why he was gone for the holidays.
It was hard to tell her he would be safe, when I couldn’t guarantee that.

Well, this is it.
Finishing up my last day of my last cycle of chemo.
3 ER visits, 32 days inpatient, 3 ICU days later.
Thank you all for your support through this.
It feels sort of anticlimactic.
Now we just wait for the PET scan September 14th. Keep me in your thoughts!!

4/ Then by 3:30pm, we are rushed to the Nasser Hospital (one of only 2 hospitals functioning). It was attacked in the past & the area around it was asked to be evacuated by the Israelis. 2 waves of mass casualties. Only 3 survived & the rest are dead or actively dying.
