🧵on my recent paper w/ an great team (see 👇), motivated by 2 questions
-What is the effect of biodiversity on productivity in natural ecosystems?
-How can we quantify causal relationships in observational data to answer that Q?

Experiments are the gold standard for causal inference but are hard to do. The ideal experiemnt is rarely possible. What happens then for causal inference? We review 4 common violations of assumptions needed for causal inference in expts & solutions. 1/n

I find the gatekeeping in Ecology to be more subtle than other fields but equally nefarious - it happens under the guise of being relaxed, welcoming, and open to new ideas & approaches but squashing new perspectives and gaslighting, behind closed doors and in not CC emails.
I am so excited to be a 2022

The consequences of species loss for food web persistence and functioning in the Gulf of Maine rocky intertidal! We will soon be recruiting a postdoc based at Colby; reach out if interested
There is an amazing undergrad working in our group who is interested in plant-soil feedbacks, community stabilizing mutualistic ties, and mycorrhizal networks. She is interesting in applying to a PhD program. Any leads? Anyone working in this area that is recruiting?
Experiments have shown that Species Diversity can increase primary productivity. But is this what diversity is doing out in nature?
New work from
@LauraEllenDee

@NatureComms
shows that, in the field, all is not so straightforward.
*I should also say* - I'll be recruiting a postdoc soonish, and possibly a student to lead the experimental field component, please, please reach out if you're interested in learning more!

I talk at 2:45 TODAY "Quantifying the effects of disturbances on ecosystem services" in 514b, asking

Attention ecologists: this is what random effects are assuming for causal inference. (e.g., this is violated with any sort of environmental gradients in observational data)

Great thread of differences and similarities between SEM and DAGs for causal inference - some of the confusion/details about SEM and causal inference in psychology is shared in ecology
I often get asked what's the difference between SEM and DAGs and some of the hesitance in certain parts of the establishment can probably be explained by an aversion against this kind of "boxes and arrows" research in psychology and management. 1/
