David Elliott, Director of Supermarionation classic Thunderbirds, and our deeply beloved friend, died this morning at the age of 92. For me it’s the end of a close 22-year-friendship that started when I was 17 and he was 71(!). We’re all heartbroken. But his work will live on.

Much is said about what Supermarionation puppets supposedly can't do - mainly walking (really they walk about as well as any puppet). So as an antidote to that here is the Stingray cast ice skating. This is pure real-time puppetry brilliance - no post production or camera tricks.

Nebula-75 was supposed to be a simple, one-off 10 minute short with 3 characters. We're rounding 2020 off with a 30-minute Christmas special, with 11 characters with newly-sculpted puppets, new models, new effects, new animations, and a guest-star. I think it's got out of hand.

Lots of discussions about whether Supermarionation has a future. Curiously, it's predominantly older fans who proclaim that modern audiences wouldn't watch it. But after 5 years of seeing the reactions from the non-fans (of all ages)... I absolutely believe a renaissance awaits.

When I was a child my mother knitted me a Thunderbird 1 jumper (for Thunderbird 1 and Scott are the best). 20 yrs later, she made me a new one for the premiere of the 3 new episodes I'd produced. It's what any fashionable gentleman should dine at the Ritz in.

episode Apollo got 6.5 million viewers. Whilst it was only a small part of a great episode, it was a lovely chance to showcase the magic of Supermarionation to a modern prime time audience. Very grateful to everyone involved.

album adaptations. The acting in this sequence is terrific - Shane Rimmer in particular gives a masterclass in delivery. It’s dramatic, yet constrained and not hyperactive - a trap many voice actors fall into these days.

Yesterday I was honoured to lead the service to say farewell to David Elliott. He wanted laughter and he got it. The attendant said it was the funniest service he’d been to — including an unintentionally hilarious committal when the coffin shot off at speed with the photo on top.

Finished the day by watching one of my favourite of David’s Thunderbirds productions. For years now, seeing his name has always prompted me to send him a rude message (our entire relationship was based on them). No more late night texts now, but cheered myself up reading the old.
