The world associates China with the urban metropolis at the risk of forgetting its wild and wildlife. It's the earth's 4th most biodiverse nation.

Snow leopard spotted down in the town of Yushu, Qinghai Province!Pretty insane, some are wondering if it has to do with all the lockdowns and lack of people on the streets.
Incredible shot of a

from my friend Puwajia at almost 5000m on the Tibetan Plateau in Qinghai Province. Incredible to see how good Tibetans are getting at putting up camera traps around their home. Much better than me!

After months of research and years of travel, excited to finally publish this story with

A deep thanks to all the Chinese NGOs and ranger friends who took me to these incredible places.
Rangers caught a Tibetan blue bear and her cubs emerging from hibernation on video today in China's newly created Sanjiangyuan Nat. Park! Pretty amazing and wouldn't want to be anywhere closer than that.
Wolves have a turbulent history in China: from being the target of state-promoted extermination to becoming a protected species this year. China just more than doubled its number of protected species. My newest story out here with

Last year
@AshDykes
became the first human on record to walk the Yangtze from source to sea. I got to follow him on some of the most stunning sections in Qinghai, filming for his upcoming documentary. We took this shot right before it started to hail.

One morning in Qinghai: Tibetan herders use this home for their summer and fall yak pastures before the snow really comes in. In their off-time, they work to monitor climate change's effects on the glaciers of Amnye Machen, the holy mountain towering above their doorstep.
On 7 day patrol with rangers in Sichuan. Found one old bullet casing on day 3 and one wire trap on day 5. Views were incredible. Glad to be working with folks who appreciated them at least as much as I did!
Wow! Just discovered my photo is the home page of the new Giant Panda National Park website. I've had many of my photos surprisingly show up in strange corners in China without my consent or credit but this is one of the better ones at least...

The good writer in me was supposed to work on a pitch yesterday afternoon until the rebellious adventure photographer looked out the window and took control. No regrets!
My team and I are so excited to receive this funding for a project that has been in my dreams for years and years. China’s wilderness needs to be known and protected. Thanks so much to everyone. Big things are coming!! 🙏

FINALLY, after returning from Asia to the US, this year-long project is out: US-China Journey to Net Zero! 187 minutes of content showcasing how US companies, communities, and individuals are involved in climate action and engaging with China! Enjoy the trailer!
Some days at work are better than others. Unreal views running around Mt. Fuji this weekend - my first time to see this incredible peak from the ground!
Can confirm that the SinoVac goes down better with immediate post-jab dim sum. (also that I was the only foreigner getting it (can’t wait to check on my Chengdu apartment after 1.5yrs))
In the spirit of China's 植树节, here are some photos from an Ant Forest nature reserve in Sichuan Province. That's a 5,588m beauty poking out there in pic 3!
China’s first 5 national parks are official! Sanjiangyuan, Giant Panda, Northeast Tiger and Leopard, Hainian Rainforest, and Mt. Wuyi all made the first cut!
After way too many hours of searching online, finally found that
#China
has a usable, public map up of all national-level nature reserves in the country (as of May!). There's a lot more on here too, there goes the rest of the weekend!
This is why I miss living over there. Friends in Chengdu just paraglided 8400m over Sichuan’s tallest peak (7556m) some 250km outside the city!!! Y’all still debating about Beijing vs. Shanghai? 🙄
For a long time I kept this in a closet afraid to get it old or dirty. It’s one of my most prized possessions from one of my favorite years (2015) that I worked very hard to earn running with Chinese teammates. But I can say it now feels better to wear it and remember!
Some of my photos of China’s last 200 Skywalker gibbons were used in a Children’s museum this weekend in Chongqing. Although still not being able to be there hurts a lot, seeing this warms my heart up a bit. Even if we can’t be there, the work never stops. 💚
“A very small percentage of people I know online or offline who are talking about camping grasp the true spirit of it. Most people are just there to take photos"
The gulf between camping and glamping is a very, very wide one. Nice reporting
@SiyuanMeng9
The graves of glaciers - scree and debris along ancient moraines are the only telltale signs of where the last glacier in Nyenpo Yurtse Qinghai used to exist. Now the glacier, covered in brown dust, is only a fraction of what it once was at 17,000ft.
Stumbled on this work photo of us on the Tibetan Plateau after surveying the last glacier in Nyenpo Yurtse before the pandemic. Those days were so special.
Talk about China these days is all about the next Cold War, Huawei, or COVID - which is probably valid - but China’s also making its own epic version of the Appalachian trail in Yunnan, Sichuan, and Gansu. I swear it’s more uplifting news.

This year, China’s 10 first national parks become official. They’re much biggger and different than anything in the west (and much more than just pandas). See more in my newest story:

Two locations within a day's drive of each other on the Tibetan Plateau. The glacier on the left is rapidly shrinking and the dunes on the right are rapidly expanding. What we're losing here, everywhere, is invaluable.

horrible new from China’s ultra marathon community this morning... 21 out of 171 runners have passed from hypothermia after a sudden storm in a Gansu race. The entirety of China’s ultra community is in shock and not sure how this will affect future races in the county.
My newest out with

Footage released by 三联生活周刊 of the Gansu race from the race official videographers. The disorganization of the race and lack of communication is horrifying.

1 year and counting since I’ve been able to water my house plants in Chengdu, but as long as I’m not there so excited that Chinese National Geography invited a ranger from Sichuan to receive my award in Bilibili’s inaugural wildlife film competition for 1st place in short films!

Exciting to see this today in China. Even though my work has crushed by Covid, grit is still getting me through day by day. Check out

Tell me I’m not the only one with too many unknown wechat contacts from who knows when/where sending generic CNY wishes.
In other news, this really goes to show how tough CNY 2020 was for so many in China.
Very excited to become an ambassador for

What happens when you use WeChat location data to map China's wilderness? 72% of China becomes wilderness area. Perhaps a bit optimistic, but a very cool project
