I got not 1, but 2 books coming out! In 2025 read all about disability in film & my views on the subject, tentatively titled POPCORN DISABILITY, for
@ApplauseBooks
. And in 2026
@Running_Press
debuts WELCOME BOILS AND GHOULS, my TALES FROM THE CRYPT oral history.
A female journalist asked Tarantino why he gave a talented actress like Margot Robbie—who plays Sharon Tate in the late-’60s Hollywood period piece—such little dialogue.
“I just reject your hypothesis,” Tarantino said bluntly, a scowl on his face.

If you're looking for a film to watch: PARIS BLUES. Everyone is stellar but Poitier is the center of it. He and Diahnn Carroll are pure magic. The way his character talks about the freedom he feels in Paris....it's a wonderful performance. He's also romantic as hell.
As a disabled critic never did I think
@TheRock
and
@skyscrapermovie
would give me a depiction of disability I actually loved. And I wrote nearly 1300 words about it for
@slashfilm
I love this:
@Journeys_Film
explores how SKYSCRAPER (SKYSCRAPER!) is a stronger representation of disability than most Oscar bait. This is enlightening stuff.
This Netflix versus theater debate just makes me want to remind you all: many disabled people can only see movies at home because theaters don't give a shit about accessibility. Just throwing that out there.
I’m just done. The amount of thoughts I have on this subject are many and I don’t want to share them for fear they’re already being planned. My heart goes out to Pola, Charlie and Genevieve who made TCM what it is!
Elizabeth Olsen is such a sweetheart. Her garden is doing good btw! Look for the full interview write-up on
@indiewire
soon. Go rewatch
#WandaVision
in the meantime.
Wow. I am officially verklempt.
@TheRock
thanks for taking the time to read my piece! Disabled representation has a long road to travel, but I was happy to see movement being made.
ANNOUNCEMENT: I can formally confirm that I will be joining
@IndieWire
as their new TV Editor! To say I am shocked and excited is an understatement. I don't think it's sunk in fully yet. Thank you to
@anndonahue
for answering all my persistent emails. Can't wait to work together!
Saw the
#MissionImpossible7
embargo lifted and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Fun and slick. Hayley Atwell was MVP for me. Rebecca Ferguson is god-level and has a sword fight that is next level. Impeccably cast, beautifully shot. Ready for the finale.
This is utterly devastating. I’ve heard A LOT of dark rumblings about what’s going on over at TCM and it’s heartbreaking. DMs are always open for those who want to discuss things.
This is the only comment I'll make about politics today. I'm with
#ElizabethWarren
. She cares about the disabled and has a plan to help many of us live in a broken system. If you care about disabled freedom she is THE choice. She is MY choice.
@ewarren
It was April 15, 2009, and I was watching The Daily Show (then hosted by Jon Stewart) along with everyone else who needed a dose of sanity in the early days of the Obama White House and GOP reactionary panic. His guest that night was a little-known Harvard Law professor. (thread)
Hi friends, both new lovers of
@TCM
and old. I see all your comments and DMs and if I don't answer them (because there are many!) please know we're all in this leaky boat together and we'll be commiserating with our favorite old movies!
#TCMParty

@TCM
is showing THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES and as I've told many, it remains one of the best portrayals of disability I can recommend, and that's great and sad.
This x 100. I don't walk out of movies thinking about "ists" and "isms" yet identity politics seem to be what younger critics engage with first these days. The conversation surrounding movies has shifted beneath our feet. Do we shift with it, or stand our ground?
So....disabled critics can just go kick rocks then? Or critics of color who already struggle for in-person access? Or ANY critic worried about a pandemic? This is definitely a take.
I love my job, but I've noticed in the last 3 years fighting/arguing about accessible event spaces to do it has exhausted me. I want more disabled critics in media but they need to know what awaits them.
@IndieWire
gave me the space to talk truth.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Now that
#TCMFF
is over now's a good a time as any to reveal that May 5th I'm taking over
@tcm
in the primetime hour with Alicia Malone to discuss 4 movies featured in BUT HAVE YOU READ THE BOOK! May 5th starting at 5pm PST.
#TCMParty
@TCM_Party
Elizabeth Olsen and I actually talked and the results are here! We discuss
#WandaVision
, classic influences, her accent, and Elizabeth using her theater training in the series!
@IndieWire
This one hurts a lot. Shelley Duvall taught me to love fantasy and fairy tales through FAERIE TALE THEATRE. She cultivated a fantastic career in spite of Hollywood challenges. She should have gotten her flowers long ago. RIP to a beautiful soul.
Not a day goes by where I don't get bummed that
@elaine4animals
pitched a Carole Lombard biopic back in the day and the studios told her no one knows who that is. Just a random thought on a Wednesday.

So excited to announce I'll be live-tweeting about several of the films airing on
@TCM
as part of their Disability in Cinema series! September 23rd and 30th.

Seeing the Gen Z continued backlash against sex scenes in movies had me thinking: What's a gesture, line reading or moment in movies that's not a sex scene but still makes you sweat?
We are delighted to welcome Kristen Lopez (
@Journeys_Film
) as the newest member of the Hollywood Critics Association.
Congratulations and welcome to the HCA family, Kristen.
In further "hey, remember how Disney said yesterday they felt so bad about letting go 28,000 employees and blamed it all on Californians not wanting to get Covid" news.
@AlishaGrauso
When a woman walks into her apartment and doesn't immediately lock her door. Or when a non-paralyzed person in a wheelchair starts army crawling on the floor if they're out of their chair.
Seeing all this access to new movies and short-term Broadway presentations is great but I have little faith it'll continue after the pandemic & it's a shame because it's given MANY disabled people access to culture at the same time as everyone else.
#Onward
is in the same vein as ZOOTOPIA so your enjoyment will vary based on that. The voice cast is good but the emotional manipulation often feels forced to contain a thin plot.
Not a great look for the Academy to be so committed to its Zoom-free ceremony that accessibility for its elderly winners was completely discarded. Not just for Hopkins, but for MA RAINEY costume designer Ann Roth. From
@akstanwyck
's reporting:
When am I getting a movie where
@blakelively
and Cate Blanchette play '40s-era detectives who rock suits, spout acid-tongued one-liners and dismantle the patriarchy?

#DunePartTwo
FAR more than one. Thrilling and gorgeously filmed in equal measure. Austin Butler is the MVP alongside Rebecca Ferguson (again). Kudos on embracing the weirdness. I still don’t love this franchise but keen to see where it goes.
I've wanted to write on the double standard of the word "difficult" for years and
@mattzollerseitz
gave me an opportunity to do that for
@ebertvoices
Balder & Dash.
Let's be clear, this almost NEVER happens in conservatorships and to see Britney free gives me hope others enduring conservatorship abuse will see justice. Conservatorship abuse remains a disabled rights issue. I'm so happy right now.
When are we gonna stop doing these terrible faux-live productions and just start recording ACTUAL Broadway performances and airing them on cable?
#RentLive
What's interesting here is Zaslav called the meeting with Spielberg, PTA and Martin Scorsese -- not the other way around. I think there's a very deliberate reason for that but won't say yet.

is utterly amazing! Lily James is astounding. A frank exploration of what we presume was a simpler time that still resonates today. Questions consent, autonomy, and gender roles. I loved everything about it!
Woke up this morning to hear I'm now a
@RottenTomatoes
Top Critic! When I dived into criticism this was one of my dreams and now it's here! Thank you RT!!!
What no one is talking about is the inclusion of disabled performers playing just people! I was so happy to see a wheelchair user who WAS a wheelchair user. Wouldn't expect anything less from
@paulfeig
.
“Any movie that does not depict the reality of the world we live in is not valid.”

on casting and showing diversity in

A lack of film history is also seeping into the new crop of film critics. You have no idea how far I roll my eyes when people review movies with no references to any original source material or past history.
LeBrecht said he will be consulted with his lawyers on the subject, but that relying on the "no one needed it" excuse is ridiculous because it forces people to admit disabilities.
I've said it before, a win like this is historic but the true work now needs to happen. Put Troy Kotsur in more movies that aren't specifically Deaf actors. Greenlight more Deaf and disabled stories.
#Oscars
Absolutely heartbroken to hear about
@Speechless_ABC
cancellation. The first time I ever felt represented. From Scott Silveri to
@driverminnie
and
@micahdfowler
. Thanks for helping this wheelchair user feel like someone got it.
Film Critic friends, when you are discussing the lack of inclusion of WoC, LGB and trans PLEASE remember your disabled female film critics. Disabled critics often have unique reasons for being discriminated and we need to be out there more.
Anyone interested in joining film criticism needs to immerse themselves in studio era filmmaking. Get a

#BarbieTheMovie
is a trip! Drawing inspiration from Old Hollywood musicals, this is a movie that feels like Ken Russell got hold of Barbie. Margot Robbie & America Ferrera are great but Ryan Gosling is next level! One needle drop had me guffawing. Boo for wasting Emerald Fennell.
I told you one day all my TALES FROM THE CRYPT research would pay off. Your girl is writing the show's oral history. (Am I insane for writing 2 books. Yes, yes I am.)

I still joke with my mom about when I overheard a rich woman say "I don't know how [person] is gonna live. Obviously she'll have to sell the Renoir."
Masks are being "recommended," not required. Sadly this means my family and I will be cancelling our AMC Stubs membership and urge others to do the same. If AMC doesn't want to protect guests, our wallets will.
We are delighted to announce that AMC will resume theatre operations beginning 7/15, rolling out in advance of
@DisneysMulan
and
@TENETFilm
. AMC will implement a comprehensive health and sanitation program: AMC Safe & Clean. Learn more:
I can finally announce that I'm being published! I've contributed a great essay to the first Rotten Tomatoes book and I can't wait for you all to read it! I picked a pretty amazing movie if I do say so myself.
Our FIRST book ‘Rotten Movies We Love’ is out this October, featuring Cult Classics, Underrated Gems, and Films So Bad They’re Good. You can preorder it now!
Apparently we're at the "how dare you tweet about frivolous things on Twitter when the world is burning" stage of 2020. Those frivolous things keep me sane. This really is a hellsite sometime.

An age-based approach allows for rampant ableism. Healthy people get vaccinated purely on age while high risk individuals live in fear. Not all disabled people are elderly and live in congregent settings.
