James Cameron has COVID and will miss the premiere of the film he just spent a decade making. I expect COVID will be eradicated within a year now. Dude's gonna square up on it.
I never thought I would see a Batman movie like
#TheBatman
: an actual detective story, methodically paced, dripping with atmosphere, modestly stylish. And it's sort of incredible to look at.
@GreigFraser_dp
and
@mattreevesLA
have crafted an aesthetic at once evocative and unique.
I was fortunate enough to see
#AvatarTheWayOfWater
this morning and listen, whatever that ticket ends up costing you, it’s worth every cent. I could have watched it all day long.
Denis Villeneuve: "I hate dialogue."
Kevin Costner: "Everybody's looking for the shootout for westerns, but the strength of them is what gets said leading up to things, because there is an oddity about how people talk. Yet, it's our Shakespeare, the American west."
I first heard about HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA back in 2016 when I interviewed Kevin Costner for Variety/iHeartRadio's "Playback" podcast. I love how my dumbass was pushing TV here and he's like, "No, bro, I'm putting out multiple movies. Watch me."

I'm really sorry to do this but these threads often spread so much (often unsourced) mythology, and this is uniquely a corner of the world I feel qualified to discuss, so, if I may…
SPEED was released 30 years ago today. Acclaimed as one of the great action movies of the ‘90s, and among the most popular of Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, the story of how it came to the screen never drops below 50…

Not a flex but being on my favorite filmmaker’s Christmas card list sure is swell, particularly at the end of a year when I really need to smile and he makes it happen.
LOL Scorsese doesn’t give a shit about any of this.
Sorkin isn’t stewing over everyone’s dunks, either.
PTA isn’t gazing at his screen teary-eyed over the spirited defenses.
McKay isn’t taking some hard look in the mirror.
You. Are. All. Just. Talking. To. Each. Other.
From this point forward, in fact, FFC will no longer be covering new MCU releases. The obsessive bullying of Scorsese--Scorsese!--from a multibillion dollar corporation has forced us to choose sides. I understand most sites don't have this luxury, so no judgment implied.
In December, as AVATAR 2 is devouring the box office and TOP GUN: MAVERICK is racking up the best home video numbers in years (maybe even with a theatrical re-release, as a treat) — that would be a good time for
@JimCameron
and
@TomCruise
to announce a collaboration. Just saying.
I spent the better part of the last two and a half years interviewing more than 80 people about SPEED. Actors, executives, filmmakers, film scholars, film fans. The result is
@50MPHPod
, an oral history podcast about a movie I love. First episode drops Monday. Here's the trailer!
Coming June 12, 50 MPH will take listeners on a year-long journey into the making and legacy of director Jan de Bont's 1994 summer megahit SPEED. Join host
@kristapley
as he secures the film's rightful place in the canon on the way to celebrating its 30th anniversary in style!
Oscar voting has concluded. Some wild cards I’m watching:
No Time to Die in Picture.
Ryûsuke Hamaguchi in Director.
Simon Rex in Actor.
Jessie Buckley in Supporting Actress.
Passing in Adapted Screenplay.
French Dispatch in Cinematography.
It’s like Year One and Long Halloween had a baby in an alternate universe. I loved Pattinson’s Batman, the way he moves, slow and willful. Colin Farrell is AMAZING. (Dude was Tom Hardy before Tom Hardy.) And the sound is unreal. I felt the Batmobile in my chest.

This year's DGA Feature Film nominees are:
Paul Thomas Anderson, LICORICE PIZZA
Kenneth Branagh, BELFAST
Jane Campion, THE POWER OF THE DOG
Steven Spielberg, WEST SIDE STORY
Denis Villeneuve, DUNE
Michael Mann looked at THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC again when prepping THE INSIDER. I'm pretty sure if I was making that movie, that would be the last bright idea to cross my mind. Dude's brilliant.
Little girl in the bunny ears down front went ape shit for the finale, running around on the floor and stopping to look up at the screen all jacked up in awe. 10/10 experience.

@RealGDT
brings on Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat, who he calls one of the greatest talents “in the entire history of the medium,” to conduct offerings from PINOCCHIO himself.

Sunday marks the 25th anniversary of Barry Levinson's WAG THE DOG. For
@VanityFair
, I spent the last six months building this oral history of a prescient political satire, a story of media, manipulation and the conjuring of a "reality" the public will buy.
Imagine crying about a David Ehrlich review because it keeps a movie you haven’t seen from the perceived aura of perfection on a review aggregation website you absolute pathetic losers.
"From our recent member survey, we learned from our Academy members that they did not love the 94th Oscars. It had a 20 percent positivity rating, compared to 61 percent for the 92nd; only 2 percent liked the Fan Favorite; only 17 percent approved of the pre-recorded awards."
One last

note: The influence of the Arkham video games has never been so prevalent, particularly in the third act. Interesting to see that vibe work its way in.
I love Desplat and I'm glad he finally won when he did, but I can't remember a single note from Grand Budapest, while it's increasingly clear to me Zimmer's Interstellar contribution is absolutely immortal.
You ever wonder what it's like for people who DON'T mark time by film releases?
I have no idea what it's like to think of 2000 and not ALMOST FAMOUS. To think of 1996 and not INDEPENDENCE DAY. 1989 and not BATMAN. To think of 1980 and not RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.
Take the high road... or be as insufferable as I promised? Hmmm. Well, people have been asking me, 'Jeff, how did you know CODA was going to win?' and you know what I tell 'em? My eyes and ears work, and more importantly, my GUT still knows a Best Picture winner when it sees one.
As awards coverage becomes a more and more saturated sector, I firmly believe the leading critical voice at the hometown paper actually moves the needle.
This is my friend Chad. A week ago. We hadn’t connected in forever other than a text here and there.
Chad’s girlfriend called me today. He passed away Monday night.
The randomness of this world is evil and spiteful and I have no fucking use for it.
Call your friend. Right now.
I haven't seen this reported and I'm not sure why exactly it happened, but Paramount has withdrawn TOP GUN: MAVERICK from consideration in this year's USC Scripter Awards, leaving GUILLERMO DEL TORO'S PINOCCHIO, LIVING, SHE SAID and WOMEN TALKING as the four film nominees.
In Noah Baumbach’s own words: “Opening the 60th NYFF with WHITE NOISE is truly special for me. This festival was part of my film education and has been a home for me and many of my movies over the years. I couldn’t be more excited and honored to return.”
