While the private school down the road boasts a 500 seat theatre for the performing arts and a Nordic ski track , we’re selling pies to raise money for stuff like band instruments, gym equipment and computers. Tell me the system isn’t broken.
My kid asked for a mental health day. She was stressed about friends, finals, and life. I said absolutely- Final exams can suck it. She woke up today feeling much better and went on anyways. But the option was there. Give kids the option! Their struggles are very real.
For 2 years my family has done everything asked of us - we stayed home, we masked up, we got vaxxed. We did everything we could to keep safe. And now
@jkenney
wants to piss all of that away because a
#caillouconvoy
is pitching a fit. Maybe it’s our turn to tantrum.
It’s Alberta. Hospitals are collapsing. Doctors and experts are now giving Covid briefings because the govt won’t. Nurses are likely headed for a strike. Horse feed stores are selling out of dewormer as people use it to cure Covid. We haven’t seen our premier in weeks. Cool.
Imagine telling parents that spending $2 per kid on KN95s is too expensive but cutting a check for $32 million a year to the war room so it can take down cartoon characters is a worthy cause.
I went to the pharmacy for more Covid tests. The pharmacist looked like she was running a MASH unit. She was short staffed, she said, everyone is sick. I asked for Covid tests. She said she has never seen. So many sick kids - even at the height of Covid. 🧵
We have an education minister who hates teachers. A health minister who hates doctors. An environment minister that tried to sell our parks. An advanced education minister who gutted PSE. This is Alberta.
I sent my kids to school just now. I sat in my car and cried. It’s heavy right now. I am so anxious I can barely function. I’m not doing well.
@AdrianaLaGrange
and
@jkenney
did this. They purposely left kids unprotected in schools. They truly don’t care about kids.
I’d like to send a resounding fuck you to every last anti-masker, anti-vaxxer , science-denying dingdong who sees it as okay to crow about “rights”. Fuck right off. All of you. You don’t know the first thing about rights, freedom, or civic duty. 🖕
Last year, we almost lost our queer kid to the homophobia and transphobia that runs rampant in Calgary’s Catholic Schools. We nearly LOST OUR KID. And now the premier of this province is trying to once again roll back rights for 2SLGBTQ+ kids. Don’t these kids matter!?
5 days in and kiddo sounds like she has TB. Horrendous cough, no appetite, tired. Still testing + . This is not mild. Nor is it kind. And to think this whole time I could have sent her to school to infect her peers. Thank god we removed masks so we can see the kids smile eh?
There are 22 reported Covid cases at our school and masks are optional on Monday. I just cannot believe this govt is willing to throw caution to the wind like this.
My oldest said her teacher was emotional as he dismissed them today. He said he hoped with all his heart that they would be okay and promised to be there for them no matter what. Teachers - we love you. And we see you. We see everything you do!
According to my chat with CCSD today, it would take $1.7 million to put Hepa filters in classrooms. Yet, the govt won’t give a $. They blew $4 mil on a tracing app that 1% of Albertans used, though. And billions on a damned pipeline to Narnia. That’s the Alberta Advantage ™️
I woke up this morning with a feeling of hopefulness. Last night, YEG and YYC returned a scathing indictment of
@jkenney
and the UCP. I haven’t felt hopeful in a long time. I feel like there just might be a glimmer of hope for those of us who believe in a progressive Alberta. /1
The only convoy I want to hear about is the convoy of teachers and health care workers that continues to truck it to work each day despite the best efforts of our government to undermine them at every step.
Alberta - where we drop $32 million a year on a war room that stalks cartoon characters and the moms are raising money to get respirators for teachers during a global pandemic. The problem was never money.
A very long thread about WestJet and what it considers to be customer service. I would caution anyone with a current reservation or making a reservation to absolutely cancel and rebook elsewhere if you can
1/
People out there thinking teachers have a hidden agenda to make their kids gay through indoctrination . 🤦♀️ If teachers could indoctrinate kids, they’d indoctrinate them to wear deodorant and hand in their homework. And maybe eat the carrot sticks in their lunch.
🧵 I love voting day. I always make sure to get to the poll right when it opens. Anyone who knows me knows - I love to vote. Today my husband and I went over to school to vote in the advanced poll. As my husband snapped this photo, a woman just out of frame to the right yelled:
Hey urgent care nurses! Just a tip: when parents present at urgent care it’s almost always because we couldn’t access our family doctor. So there is no need to shame us for using the system. I wouldn’t be here with my child if I had another avenue to access health care.
Starting today, I’ll be tweeting the Calls to Action drafted by the TRC. Read them. Learn about them. Here is
#1
. The foster care system is the new residential school system. 52% of Indigenous children are in care yet these children account for only 7.7% of the population.
My kid has a teacher with a newborn at home. He begged them yesterday with everything he had to please “think responsibly” when it came to wearing masks next week. These are the people we should be protecting - not a deflated politician trying to save his own hide.
🧵
Effective immediately, I have resigned as the president of the Calgary-Bow NDP Constituency Association president. Recent events with the party have demonstrated to me an unwillingness by party staffers to act in good faith, act respectfully, and act with decency.
If you’re going to send me nasty DMs here and through my other social media channels because I had the *gall* to organize a rally in support of public education, please know I won’t be reading any of it. Not a line. Not a syllable even. ✌️
This is the system the UCP created. People are sick and can’t get help. They aren’t reporting their sickness because many cannot access a test. They tell us to exercise personal responsibility and then they take away the tools to let us do so. Again, the system is broken. /end
Thanks
@AirCanada
for cancelling our flights this morning. You’ve lost us an entire day of vacation - that we saved and scrimped to take. It isn’t easy to go back home and I haven’t been since 2018. And thanks for rebooking us on the milk run. I really appreciate that with kids.
Just a tip: don’t give worksheets to kids in class that describe skin tones as being only four colors, especially if one of those colors is yellow, and expect them to describe themselves. My Asian kiddo is not yellow.
If you’re angry with Sean Chu, be angry with him. Don’t lash out at the Chinese communities in YYC. This isn’t their fault. The vast majority are appalled and disgusted with Sean Chu. Do not let a vocal minority speak for Chinese communities! Please.
Alberta - where citizens wait outside in -30 to get rapid tests in a hunger games style hand out when they should have had access to tests all along. Alberta Advantage strikes again.
Honestly? I don’t even know where to put my outrage anymore. Pay for use in Kananaskis? Closure of SCS? Dismantling of public education and PSE? Absolute crisis with emergency services? War on HCWs? Bungling of a pandemic? Useless war room? Pipeline to Narnia? It’s too much.
Albertans - do not ever forget that
@jkenney
and
@AdrianaLaGrange
sacrificed the safety of your children to placate a racist convoy of selfish people who refused to listen to science so that he could keep his job. Now more than ever we need to ensure that he is out in 2023.
Never thought I would have to stand on the sidewalk and watch as my kid was escorted into her school by the police to collect her things.
@CCSD_edu
has done nothing but traumatize our child who was the victim of an anti-2SLGBTQ+ hate crime on June 8th. We are not okay.
Our school sent a reminder yesterday - please stop sending sick kids to school. 35 people a week are dying in Alberta. Can we please just wear our masks and care about one another?
Maybe
@AdrianaLaGrange
can tell parents who signed on for a full year of in person instruction BECAUSE of the protections in place what options they have now? Because she has ripped the rug out from under them. So much for parent “choice”.
#abed
Hey
@cityofcalgary
- How is it that antimaskers can have a rally each week and maraud about the city but when a group of parents applies for a permit to hold a rally for public education the right way they get a resounding refusal? What’s up with that? 🧐
Webber Academy over there bragging about it’s 500 seat theatre and cross country track while schools nearby are fundraising for basic computer equipment and art supplies. And yet we find these schools out of the public purse. That needs to stop immediately.
Absolutely disgusting remark from
@jkenney
. This is how anti-Asian hate perpetuates. This is a slap in the face to so many people and their heritage. This is why my kids are repeatedly asked in school if they eat bats or if their dad brought Covid to Canada. Apologize now.
"And what’s the next bat soup thing out of Wuhan? I don’t know," says Premier
@jkenney
.
The Premier of Alberta felt obliged to drop a racist trope in his year-end interview with Rick Bell.

Come join us at Jason Copping’s office @ 12pm today as we say “Nope” to his unsafe plan to remove restrictions that put our kids and their teachers at risk. Wear a mask, bring a sign!
When I sent my kids back to in person school in September, I made that decision based on the protocols in place to keep kids safe. Now,
@AdrianaLaGrange
has scrapped those same protocols. This is not fair. You can’t sell us protection, take it away, and tell us to like it.
Just spoke to my school board. And an official just said - and I quote directly - “It would be better to burn the money than but Hepa Filters”. So that’s where we are in Alberta.
Worked with a student for the first time in a month tonight as the kiddo had Covid. Their brain fog is so intense and their inability to focus so diminished it was unreal. They now fear failing IB exams b/c they simply can’t work as they used to. Thank god kids don’t get it eh?
Sent my kids back to school yesterday. Cried in my car after drop off. Felt guilty as heck all day and today. Got a letter this evening of a confirmed case in my oldest’s class. It didn’t have to be like this. I asked her how most of her friends felt at school. She said scared.
We are not living in the same province, sir. This was the year Alberta refused to upgrade classroom ventilation, went to war with HCWs, refused to give students the supports taken from them, plunged head first into a fourth wave - swagger my arse.
This year was the year that Alberta got our swagger back.
Next year will be the year we prove to the world that we are the absolute best place to invest, create jobs and raise your family.
15,000 new jobs in November!

When a patient tells you that they have wimpy veins and it’s a journey to insert an IV, please listen rather than try and be a hero. I’ve had these veins for 40 years. You’ve had them for 15 mins.
Anybody find it odd that the minister responsible for post-secondary education in Alberta has no experience in Alberta’s post-secondary education institutions? 🤔
I posted earlier about not being able to obtain a PCR test for my child who is sick. I contacted 811 who arranged a tele appointment with a physician. I spoke to that physician who suggested that my child see a walk in clinic as she likely has a secondary infection /1
Each time you see
@AdrianaLaGrange
you will notice a “kids first” pin in her blazer. I’d like to ask her to kindly remove it. She has not put kids first once during her tenure. Maintaining funding while enrolment increases means more kids and less resources. Kids LAST.
So now it’s up to parents to beg on their hands and knees to their school boards and trustees. I will never forgive
@AdrianaLaGrange
@CMOH_Alberta
and
@jkenney
for putting us in this position. There is no goodwill or trust left between parents and the education minister. Zero.
We live in a province where the premier threatens the female leader of the opposition to a scrap outside the Leg and an abuser sits on Calgary city council. I can NOT.
All of that.
@JanisIrwin
is pure and unadulterated light. And she has carried the weight of being the voice of advocacy for 2ALGBTQ+ folks within the NDP - often alone - for so so long. Watching her speech today was heart wrenching. We don’t deserve her. ♥️
My little is tucked in her bed excited for school and I’m crying my goddamned eyes out because I don’t know how to keep her safe in a world where her government is perfectly okay with children getting COVID.
In Canada. In 20 fucking 21. While voting. She didn’t wear a mask to vote. She wore a ridiculous face shield contraption that protected no one. My husband looked at me and said “I thought I came to Canada to escape this bullshit”. Apparently not, sir. Apparently not.
Why don’t women speak up about systemic abuse and misogyny in organizations? Largely because of people like Dan. Btw, pal, my kids don’t play soccer. My inbox is full of this garbage. Stop doing this to women. Literally.
Schools are being pummeled with RSV and Covid. Sick children are coming to school massless. They are making schools a breeding ground for illness. She said they are compounding Tylenol and Advil solutions hand over fist because there aren’t any to buy. Shelves are empty.
Just a reminder that your school trustees are elected officials and you have every right to not only question their position on their dumpster fire of a curriculum but to also vote accordingly in the fall. Hold them accountable - I will be.
I’m starting to think that Girl Guides has a more robust vetting process for volunteers than Alberta’s municipalities have for potential council candidates.
I’ve seen some pretty disparaging comments about NL nurses coming to help out in YMM - including a dig by our own premier. Understand that NL has its own nursing shortage - they offered to help despite their own troubles.
This is the epitome of bullshit. There was a time when I paid more to fly with WSJ. But now I’d pay more to avoid them. We need stricter regulations to hold airlines accountable as they do in Europe. We need to stop accepting this kind of treatment as customers. Never again, WSJ.
Hey
@AdrianaLaGrange
- did you seriously order these via
@amazon
with Prime shipping? Cause that’s where these came from. Top masks I bought earlier this year from Amazon. Bottom masks my kid got in school. Same exact lot number. These are NOT medical grade masks.
@amandalhu
Our govt has failed us - every level. Our school trustees have failed us - tragically. I’ve heard it said a society can be judged on how it treats its vulnerable members. We will be judged, Alberta. And we will be found wanting.
Reading posts from friends back in NL about not getting the vaccine because they “don’t know what’s in it”. B’ys: ye grew up eating baloney and Vienna sausages. Please. Try harder.
She then said “this is communism”. Normally my husband stays silent but this time he piped up with a “you don’t know shit about communism”. My husband left a communist country. A country where his grandpa was shot for not turning over his home and farm. Another grandpa was exiled
The masks that kids will be wearing back to school will NOT be KN95s. This is confirmed. And yet our premier is sporting one, likely, I guess, bc he knows they are superior. So why aren’t our teachers and students getting them? Or HCWs?

“take off tour mask if you’re taking a photo, no one can see your pretty smile”. I said “nah, I’d rather show people how to stay safe when voting”. What followed was an abusive, anti- mask tirade about losing choice in this country and the destruction of our democratic rights.
As a parent, I will not forget the moment the police had to escort my child to her locker to collect her belongings because homophobic slurs were written across her locker and transphobic threats were made to her even though she isn’t trans.
@CCSD_edu
failed to keep her safe /1
It absolute boils my blood that the cost for a West Calgary high schools is $50 million and the government refuses to fund it. Meanwhile, we pump $30 million a year into a Bigfoot-chasing war room. Fund classrooms, not war rooms!
Stop trying to tell us that surgical masks are slightly below KN95s in effectiveness! Stop it! They are not. They can’t even compare. This government has $32 million a year to chase big foot but not a goddamned cent to protect kids. Fund safe schools, not the war room!
How is this system working? We went through this exact scenario two years ago. No one would see her due to the fact that she is symptomatic. Imagine how a single parent or a low-income parent can afford to payout of pocket for a Covid test at $50 each in order to see a doc /4
My cousin texted to ask if it were true that the Chinese Communist Party was building internment camps at the base in Cold Lake to round up the unvaccinated. She was legit scared to death. A close friend had sent her a story via FB. Like - I just don’t even know where to start.👇
1 in 3 people in Calgary being tested is positive for Covid. And not a single added protection for our children and teachers heading back to school next week. I will never forgive this govt for their consistent cruelty towards children and teachers.
Public education in this province is facing an absolute crisis. As a parent, it is heartbreaking to see a once world-class system be pulled apart brick by brick. Ditch the draft. Build schools. And stop playing politics with our kids.
Thanks
@TheCurrentCBC
for having me on this morning. Alberta’s decision to stop
#TestTraceIsolate
is forcing parents to become utterly desperate and hopeless. It is shortsighted and dangerous.
My youngest child is in grade 2. Social studies is her favorite time of the day. This year, my kid is learning all about the various regions of Canada. Our teacher, Mrs. R is a miracle worker. Every other month she turns the classroom into an airport and the kids fly off.
When you tell a friend that their behaviour is harmful to you and they press ahead with said behaviour, it’s time to reevaluate your friendships. This is a note to myself to choose more carefully.
Newfoundland and Labrador is working on a deal with Ottawa for $10 a day daycare. So proud of my home province! So frustrated with my current province.
