@vanderrwaals Honestly I liked that she had a husband, it's kinda powerful. How many women aren't basically single moms despite having a whole husband. And I liked that he was just useless, not even evil - that Gloria's arc wasn't about her husband at all, or a Lack^tm of a husband

me: h- twitter: lesbian is an umbrella term. nobody is 100% lesbian. lesbian is bigoted regressive and restrictive. everyone has exceptions. lesbian is an evanescent identity & will stop to exist in the future. have you reexamined yourself yet? let's call it anything but lesbian

gotta say it's quite telling to see people so Shocked when the narrative makes it clear that the point of leighton's arc is realizing that being judgmental (something she clearly developed from her upbringing) is a self-destructive habit that she wants to change

her s1 arc was EXPLICITLY about not wanting to be associated with stereotypical queerness because of how they are perceived/judged in society - not realizing that she was adding to that judgment & hurt herself - and her overcompensating commitment to institutional Femininity

sure, these last two episodes did a bit of Speedrunning with regards to leighton's arc (and her rekindling with alicia too), but it DOES make perfect sense, as an arc - this was always gonna be like, her arc lol

(it's reductive in the sense that these narratives often create binaries of fully closeted vs. fully out, when in reality, most queer people move through very layered situations of being partially closeted & functional partially closeted relationships are very common)

(and comparing alicia to tatum in terms of leighton being closeted is therefore super ridiculous, because leighton only met tatum after she had grown to be comfortable out, actually, in their school environment. they'd never dated otherwise!)

the classic closet-conflict plot is a cliché, and it often puts the love interest in an ungrateful position, because their function as a plot device is to be a catalyst, to make the closeted one feel the weight & sacrifices of being closeted, and that is reductive sometimes

s1 was also about the homophobia she was regurgitating, it wasn't JUST about her being closeted - which should indeed NOT come with an ultimatum and leighton had every right to take her time, but people can do with the reminder that there's layers to being closeted

it's weird ppl act Shocked because the show demonstrates actually some understanding about the very fraught relationship between lesbianism and gender roles - it shows up in Leighton's kappa arc, her relationship with her mom, but ALSO her relationship with tatum vs alicia

however, in the breakup convo with alicia, we see how that isn't quite true. turns out that one of leighton's biggest fear is to become & be perceived as & be associated with stereotypical queer people. and that is shame. homophobia-induced shame.

The positive is that it is meant to be inspiring to queer kids, to accept & love themselves. A pitfall is that this has reductive implications about closeted ppl, bc a lot of ppl can never come out to their family, but that doesnt mean they aren't themselves or can never be happy

another way this shame manifests is how, a whole season long, leighton rationalizes to herself that surely, she isn't closeted, she isn't afraid to be out - it's all just about privacy for her. it's about wanting to be an individual.

the consequence of these plot lines is often that it polarizes, because it puts the two people in a ship on opposite lines of a struggle, and it makes the audience pick sides (often the side of the character who they find most sympathetic, which is often based in a lot of bias)

(and it's very funny that people aren't discussing this more, because gay stan twitter itself constantly perpetuates this shaming of other "stereotypical" "embarrassing" queer people, in a refusal to unpack the shame & embarrassment & homophobia that is at the basis of that)

and another manifestation of that is how much she is desperate to belong with that sorority, because she wants desperately to be seen as a normal perfect girl, the perfect societal norm of womanhood, as opposed to belonging to queer ppl as a group

it manifests for example in how she arrived in the women's centre and immediately thought all these people were deeply cringey & embarrassing. she rationalizes, however, that it surely wasn't because of identity, it was because of /personality/.
