2002. We were heading out to Oregon for the playoffs and our leading WR had suffered a horrific ankle injury a few weeks before. D3 rules limited rosters in the postseason to (i think 48) and then just 4 alternates.

This season our players are wearing “JW” stickers in honor of legendary Dowling Coach Jim Williams. Coach Williams took over at Dowling in 1964 and coached through 1975, winning 118 games including 47 in a row.

This was taken by Tim Touro of Hiawatha (just north of Cedar Rapids) of the derecho Monday that decimated the state of Iowa. We got power in the central part of the state yesterday after over 100 hours without. This morning there are still over 146,000 Iowans without it.

I tell a lot of my players that everyone focuses too much on the bad decisions high schoolers make but this is a decision that 25 years later I’m still pretty happy with. We’ve learned to tolerate each other quite well.

My daughters and their boyfriends are currently playing catch with a football in the street while we have the Olympics projected on the garage door. It’s 68 degrees on August 5. If there’s such thing as a happy place I’ve found it.

Sat beside Drue at so many sporting events over the years. Countless photos of myself with a weird face or “in the zone” as he called it sent to me after. Always had photos of my girls in my inbox after games. This photo was one of his favorites taken.
