this is actually a great example of conservation bias in textiles! basically, smaller garments from wealthy people survive because they are less like to fit other descendants, and therefore aren’t worn out over time. that’s one reason historical clothing always seems so small!.
A pair of stays c. 1770-1780s. They’re the equivalent of a UK size 20. I have never seen a pair of stays larger than a UK 10! Annoyingly, often only small sizes were acquired for museum collections so these are a real gem! From @NorwichCastle. #redressingdiversity #dresshistory
