seeing ppl with usernames related to wilbur soot and lovejoy tweeting out that they dont support wilbur is just ironic. change your usernames. it’s the least you can do.
tw racism sinophobia
why one of tommyinnit’s series of shorts/tiktoks that he made and posted is racist and reinforced chinese stereotypes
this is the 3rd time im making this cause twitter hates me.
a 🧵:
A reminder that your behaviour at gigs reflects directly back to Lovejoy and their adjacent artists. If you carry on acting irresponsibly at gigs, this will get feedback to venues and venues talk to each other. We run the risk of getting blacklisted by venues due to fan behaviour
im so angry. words dont describe how upset i am at the venues. it isnt lovejoy’s fault. security do better to protect gig goer’s safety. let disabled people have access to accessibility. gigs are meant to be for everyone. we need an improvement because the venues on this tour
ccs fucking listen up because as much as i love this community and i didnt think we would have this debate here too
this is an impulse thread so sorry if it sucks but english isnt my first language :)
sneeg. this tweet didnt need to be tweeted 🧵
i want to explain abt ticket prices for tommy’s show tour. this isnt a gig. it is a show. shows are held in theaters with seating, lighting and sound. they would be expected to have similar prices to a musical tour because they have similar production costs and requirements.
one thing that has always bothered me abt lvjy is their whole thing in interviews abt ‘we were gifted our fans and now we have to do things to make it up to them’ but when we ask for things that are pretty reasonable for a fandom to ask of a band, we are met with fucking silence.
on the topic of mcc and the lack of diversity within the 'main stream' mcyt community. can we pleas uplift queer / poc / disabled ccs? we can complain about it all we want but we need to uplift the people so other people see us.
i remeber when this comment was published. i clicked to go listen to the whole album one late night on my laptop. dim as fuck laptop screen and i scroll down and i saw this. published 3 mins ago. (this isnt a ss from that time shut up i know) but know i cried. alot. i love him sm
i honestly think it is a very silly idea to put a pride flag on packaging as much as it is cute we and many others didnt expect it at all. it could risk many of us and us being outed or having that awkward convo with our family
have treated gig goers awfully. im so sorry for all of the disabled gig goers especially because hearing the stories from friends and ppl on here makes me so angry.
lovejoy wanted accessible venues. they wanted gigs to be for everyone. venues going back on their word and denying disabled access or access being just god awful it really upsetting to see. i cant say enough how important it is that we keep gigs open and safe for everyone.
@backtothisnight
i saw a clip of jack and tommy saying ‘ding dong the wicked bitch is dead’ abt maggie thatcher and the way tubbo reacted threw me off man, there is such a clear class divide between tubbo and everyone else it is crazy
to quickly run down what racist statements ksi makes in this video :
• assumes he is japanese ‘sushi comments’
• ‘this has been eye opening experience’
• ‘its cultural’
btw, international fans get nothing. touring being their only way of promotion is not effective if you want to expand your audience outside of your main listening pool if you dont make content out of the tour. lovejoy have such a lack of official online content esp now.
i ran scott smajor updates at the time all of this happened and all 3 admins got consistent death threats in the months following. stan behaviour like this isnt acceptable. death threats are never ok in any circumstance. it effected me and other admins alot.
be kind <3
im honestly so proud of jacks progress over the past few months. everyone was making fun of him back when the boxing vlog came out but he put so much work in over the past 7 months to get where he is at. im proud to see such a dedicated guy. jackmanifoldtv u’ve done good dude
it rubbed me the wrong way but i couldnt put my finger to it.
the stereotypes demonstrated in the series of videos directly link to how chinese people have been portrayed in the past, wether it be in media or in historical political propaganda!
the editing is also a choice to say the least. the way they edit it to exaggerate his speech and how he ‘doesnt speak properly’ is something. examples :
and many would say ‘oh this is just a harmless joke’ but when you see the comments on some of these videos, the purposeful editing, the audience tommy is appealing to, then you might be able to understand why this is extremely harmful.
(a chinese language). as much i can say he might be chinese i cant assume that he is because there are many chinese diaspora because of the way china is made up (which is a whole other thing). neither do anything offensive but it is all downhill from this first video.
this mean that Lovejoy and others will not be able to tour in as many places as they would like. We have seen this type of behaviour already and if this carries on the consequences could be catastrophic for everyone. I hope that you have a good time but keep how u act in mind!
this can be linked to how chinese language (and so its accents) are viewed as ‘alien’ and ‘different’. in every video the other ‘tommyinnit’ asks each of the people he prank calls to date him. this clearly is a play on the ‘asexual’ (not in the sexuality way) asian man
i shouldnt need to explain why these comments are just extremely racist. now i know these drew mainly from ksi’s comments within the video but tommy made the choice to make, edit and publish the video which he had every right to not post. yet he did.
and classism throughout this whole debate. this is how many working class british chinese immigrants are able to work and make money. this is how MY family got their start in this country that didnt accept them at all. all of the takeaways are owned by chinese immigrants.
all of the videos he is in after are all prank calls. this is significant because tommy is putting people on the spot with this other ‘tommyinnit’ and the use of the accent (which is notorious for its so called ‘difficult understanding’ ) is being used to confuse and scare people
and i doubt you know and the ccs in the replies probably dont either. but this whole debate about our food made by our people is really grinding my gears. there is so much underlying racism, sinophobia (fear of chinese ppl for those of u who dont know)
which is a sterotype that portays asian men as undesirable and the ‘creepy asian man’ sterotype which potrays asian men as perverted and only wanting on romantic or sexual acts.
the used of bucking his teeth when speaking is another chinese sterotype which derives from 60s media and the use of yellowface (people hire white actors to play asian roles) him bucking his teeth is used as the thumbnail also rubs me the wrong way (this might be auto gen tho)
we were serving 'clean' food. it is still currently still one of the only ways chinese immgrants here can get any sort of economic foot hold here in the uk. also we live and serve the british working class. this is meant to be cheap and filling. it isnt meant to be authentic.
this series of videos perpetuate very negative stereotypes about chinese people using ‘yellow peril’ though out. yellow peril is a racist metaphor that depicts east and southeast asians as dangers to the western world. (the spy comments + the use of stereotypes are an example)
all of these videos made me deeply uncomfortable throughout. it displays that we chinese people are still the butt of the joke (yet again) and that we are being used for comedic relief at our own expense.
despite language barriers, racist attacks and class divisions they still persevere. many of mine and my friends families suffered racist attacks throughout covid due to us being chinese. nothing else. our whole livelihoods were questioned in covid and if
our accent being villainised as creepy, alien and unintelligent despite that not being the case at all. seeing the underlying micro aggressions being perpetuated by massive content creators who should know better than to swoop this low for the sake of content.
tommy (on nov 18) made what would be a series of shorts/tiktoks including this man. to our knowledge, we dont know who this man is or his affiliation to tommy. but from this video [] we know he speaks mandarin at the end
the most authentic part is probably the amt of spices we use in the curry and our use of soy sauce for our rices and noodles. no one is saying it is authentic at all. (actual authentic options are very expensive btw. a meal for 2-3 ppl is abt 75 quid which isnt normal to spend
@rosefires20
@lovejoy
yeah i clicked into it, didnt get any tw because it just sent me though without the yt warning most ppl get. it caught me off guard at first honestly
for most working class ppl on a weekly meal??? ) t is made for british tastes. american chinese food doesnt do much better on the authenticity part either? as much as we love to have a laugh about a curry with chips
which i do find hilarious and never got at all, you are disregarding our culture that has so much unique and wonderful history. also it gives a sense of familiarly. most places sell chips and curry. it isnt a chinese takeaway exclusive thing at all. as much as it is confusing
its not nice seeing ccs talk about something that you grew up in. a place you called home. living on top of the takeaway and hearing the pub goers from across the road pick up their orders 11:45pm sharp :) something you know was how ur family found their foot holding
tallulah is a non verbal autistic who uses signs and gifts to communicate with people. she loves writing on signs as they can be temporary or permeant depending on people’s wishes. she loves giving people things that remind her of them. flowers and fish are her main go tos!
let people eat what they eat. do what they do. they are not harming you. they are trying to make a living in a very hostile environment.
please go read 'takeaway' by angela hui if you want a better look into how it works behind the scenes etc.
it is something that is wonderful. it shows how british chinese immigrants are resourceful because all of our food is made with what we can get our hands on here in the uk. there isnt much fancy shit in ur chinese takeaway.
thank you for reading. sorry if it sucks and is shotty because english isnt my first language and my angry has definitely seeped though in this thread. go support ur local chinese (and yes that is a sentence. and no it is not racist. lazy talk am i right? ) <3
the fact this debate started in API heritage month makes this more laughable because it just show the clear disregard for our communities and how hard we have worked to get where we are currently. to even be able to speak abt this is a privilege ik hold.
also bare in mind. most of this is being reflected though the kids (ppl like myself) who watched it happen. most of our families dont speak english at all. they cant defend themselves and their choices. why are people even debating the validity of our own culture beats me.
i want to make it clear. i have never been an anti of any of the ccs. i love sneeg and many of the ccs in the replies but some of these ccs need to realise they have privilege. the privilege reeks in the replies i read and alot of it hurt to read.
i cant illierate how badly a trigger warning was needed for the mv. as someone we recently reached their goal, seeing some looking like they are doing it is very triggering. it caught me off guard. hearing someone say a line is very diff compared to seeing someone demonstrate it
Hey
@lovejoy
Can you put a trigger warning on the Golden Hour ep please?
It's age restricted but there's no warning for those of us over 18 especially since it's such clear imagery.
ccs fucking listen up because as much as i love this community and i didnt think we would have this debate here too
this is an impulse thread so sorry if it sucks but english isnt my first language :)
sneeg. this tweet didnt need to be tweeted 🧵
FOR GIG GOERS!
i know many of you want to go to more gigs in the future and as we go to more we need to be weary of our hearing! the human ear isnt meant to withstand that amount of decibel (volume) consistently! i would suggest you invest in earplugs! good ones cost £12+
there is alot more behind the scenes staff with a production like that. this includes costume and making sure cues, makeup and everything is timed right! i hope this clears up some confusion :)
i feel like we need a serious talk abt concert etiquette again because imagine he ended up tripping on smth on stage a fan threw etc. like come on guys
