However, just as I lifted the slab, a wolf spider curried into one of the pipes. She was too fast and crafty to document. However, I suspect she laid waste to the black widow supremacy of spider hole and has made it her own private penthouse.

The slab seems much the same as ever: however, this year, I found it slightly ajar. This is how I believe the interloper gained access.

The sheer number of spiders in this hole is mind blowing. It is obscene. I can’t really imagine why they have stayed in this hole and this hole alone for so long. Surely one concrete slab can’t really contain them. I guess it’s the home country.

The spider hole is, as one might expect, a hole in the ground. It used to be a drainage hole of some kind I guess. But when we moved in we realized it was also home to a colony of black widow spiders. So we put a concrete slab on it and have avoided it for twenty years.

On raising the slab the first thing one notices is that the underside is home to the biggest and juiciest of the spiders. This is the penthouse suite of female black widow society. These spiders are as big as my thumbtip. One appeared to be eating a snail.

It’s also warm enough right now that they’re all very busy. The colony is clearly going strong twenty years (or more) into its life. This spider hole has a more storied history than many human beings alive today.

My parents have done nothing about the spider hole for the entire time they’ve owned this house. But honestly I don’t know if there are any tools or technologies known to mankind to adequately deal with the sheer density of spiders in the Hole.
