“Living with COVID” continues to mean that my medically vulnerable 4 year old doesn’t get to leave our house, continues to miss needed medical appointments, and hasn’t received school services in almost two years. Why are we expected to just accept this?
Just saw a post from an FB friend wondering why they’re still so fatigued day 4 into a COVID infection… this is what happens when this virus has been so thoroughly downplayed by public health, the gov, & media. 10 comments on the post from folks all saying it took them 1/
@BrianKempGA
“Brian Kemp is actively abusing the power of his office to make it more difficult for Georgians to vote. He must step down immediately as Secretary of State.”
John Lewis, October 16, 2018.
So excited for yet another wave of COVID (so seasonal!!) with my too young to be vaccinated 4 year old. No approved treatments for kids under 12! No masks, no mitigations, no govt financial support! Complete and total abandonment.
@ohJuliatweets
Can articles stop including quotes from family and friends that say things like I never saw this coming! They never fought! They were so happy! Yeah, abusers usually don’t love to broadcast their abuse. Not helpful. Humanizes the abuser.
Millennials and Gen-Zers are pulling in bigger paychecks, but much of their spending power is fueling short-term purchases like groceries and vacations, not savings.
@BenSasse
Politics are at the center of my life because every time I turn around, you numb nuts are trying to remove protections for preexisting conditions, when doing so would render my son, born premature, uninsurable for the rest of his life.
@cleveland19news
You should change this photo. That looks to be a full-term pregnancy. The so-called “heartbeat” bill would ban abortion at 6 weeks, when most women do not even know they’re pregnant.
3+ weeks to feel some semblance of normalcy afterwards, & some still ill with long COVID from infections 9 months ago.
Unconscionable to me that anyone can call this a “mild” illness. 2/2
I know a lot of people are shocked that there’s been no government response to the pediatric hospital crisis but I assure you, they do not care about disabled kids and they never have. Their existence is barely, if ever, acknowledged. This is nothing new.
@BenSasse
I realize that you’ve insulated yourself with privilege and wealth to the point where the policies you vote on won’t materially affect your life, but I don’t have that level of protection.
the most logistically important thing a comrade has ever done for me was not 50 pushups per day but instead, sitting down w/ their chemist husband to figure out how to make & source the ingredients for amino acid formula for my disabled son who cannot eat food, but anyway 🤗
the children’s hospital is on ECMO diversion. not even sure how to process that. there are only 12 pediatric ECMO beds in the state and they have 8 of them.
If I wanted to get the eight “free” monthly COVID tests to which I am entitled, I would have to spend $120, fill out a full page form from my insurance’s website (need printer), mail it in (need envelope and stamp), wait ~30 days, receive $96 check.
That’s not free.

@ohJuliatweets
Yes, and the family friend quoted pointed out how much he loved his daughters. Well, he killed their mom, so. I’m sure it’s a shock to the people around them, but I don’t think it needs to be included in news stories. I feel like it also sends a message -
what if… we didn’t see children presenting with atypical speech development as behind or broken and instead recognized variability in communication as part of the human spectrum, providing them ample opportunities and modalities to discover what works best for them?
OH APPARENTLY
@childrensatl
DOESN’T REQUIRE MASKS *INSIDE THE HOSPITAL* ANYMORE.
My child is getting a medically necessary CARDIAC CATH and masks are not required. You have got to be fucking kidding me.
I would retweet this one million times if that were possible. My medically vulnerable child has been 100% excluded from indoor public spaces, including SCHOOL, and no one gives a shit about the impact that has on him.
It is amazing how many people shrug off the issue of medically vulnerable people being effectively excluded from indoor public spaces indefinitely, but also claim its unsustainable for mental health to ask people to wear a mask or skip indoor dining for any length of time
a very cool thing about the a*derall shortage and the DEA's new announcement is that my psych retired at the end of 2021 and i haven't been able to get my adhd meds basically since then. FINALLY found a telehealth place, who made me get an EKG, several more hoops, AND THEN -
@RepStephenMeeks
I am honesty kind of impressed by how incredibly ill-informed you are. Did this homeless man graduate from high school? Does he have a physical address to receive mail? Does he have access to the internet to apply to “school”? Do you mean truck driving school or college or?
@ashishkjha
Congrats, your experience isn’t universal. Why don’t you use your platform to push for these mitigations to happen in other places, and to loudly say that it’s NOT SAFE without these mitigations?
Difficult for me to be coherent about this topic and/or anything but an incandescent ball of rage, but jfc, please stop telling parents COVID is nbd for kids, especially BABIES.
I simply cannot reiterate enough how badly Covid conscious folks need to cut this shit out.
Are we gonna make IQ min requirements for specific professions? What the fuck do y’all think you’re insinuating here, truly??
@SparksMom53
@ohJuliatweets
Of like gosh, who could have seen this coming? No way to prevent it! I don’t know the stats, but I imagine there’s a high likelihood of repeat offenses. And all those weapons confiscated from his house the first time? Major red flags.
What I especially love* about this is that there’s zero safety net or social programs for families with a premature infant. Just throw your high risk baby into the viral soup and hope for the best ✌🏻
*I deeply, deeply hate this
Just blanket FYI : as a human adult in the US, I’m fully aware of the existence of the ADA. If the ADA worked or had any power or enforcement behind it, do you think we’d be in the situation we are now? Please stop telling people to invoke the ADA as if that means anything.
idk why ppl think masking was invented like for the pandemic but here’s my kid in a mask in 2019 - he was 2!! he had a planned surgery but ended up testing pos for rhinovirus & spent some extra time hospitalized. he wore a mask so he could go on wagon rides in the picu 🫶🏻
@RepStephenMeeks
Anyway, I could go on forever. I’ll just sum it up by saying this is a garbage take and you know it. If it were truly a matter of “hard work,” we’d all be millionaires.
at which point, i gave up. and now i have overdue insurance premiums, because i CANNOT WORK consistently without my medication, and i cannot jump through these fucking hoops to get my medication WITHOUT MY MEDICATION. *screaming*
@CDCDirector
My high risk 4 year old isn’t “choosing” to not be vaccinated, ma’am. Thanks for making it clear you don’t value the lives of disabled children.
@RepStephenMeeks
Does this homeless man have 3k-7k to pay for truck driving school? Access to transportation to get to school? Food? Shelter? Health care in case he gets sick? Let’s assume he does and goes to truck driving school just fine.
@jduffyrice
I’ve been getting the wrong emails of a woman for years and discovered this year that she’s anti-vaccine and was collaborating with coworkers to fight her company’s vaccine mandate. I may have passed that information along to the relevant parties. 💁🏻♀️
JH was born at 26 weeks. Every single viral illness he caught led to him hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit for respiratory failure. He nearly died.
I’m so fucking furious that society’s response to caregivers of disabled babies re COVID is: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It seems like some people are trying to draw a causal line from “fear mongering” about COVID to our current COVID situation. This makes no sense. No official public health comms have ever overstated the risk of COVID and no COVID policy has ever been disproportionate to the risk.
my insurance suddenly refuses to cover my v*vanse, even though i had been on it for years. claimed they needed a PA. fine. my doc sends it. they didn't get it. my doc sends it again. they didn't get it. finally i look up the formulary for my plan, & v*vanse DOES NOT REQUIRE A PA.
Places we encountered unmasked people at
@childrensatl
after their masking policy changed:
- elevators from parking garage to hospital entrance
- security line
- registration (staff with mask hanging off face)
- elevators to 2nd floor
- cath lab waiting room
@RepStephenMeeks
Alright, now he’s got to find a job. Entry level jobs are mostly of the long-haul variety. It’s difficult work. What’s the median annual wage, you might be wondering... well, it’s $37,930, so a little more than half of the 70K you claim.
I’ve voted in every goddamn election since I turned 18. In college, I took a bus to Florida and slept on strangers floors to GOTV for Dems. I’ve fucking had it. You think you can play kickball with the GOP hours after trans kids are banned from care and we’ll just let it go?
@ShawnteJamesMD
I feel like you would fit in at my son’s NICU. Here’s the wanted poster his night shift nurses made him the day before he transferred out for surgery. 🤣
I’m sorry, the Rochelle Walensky “thank god only disabled people are dying” statement was in JANUARY? This has been the longest year of my fucking life.
In our latest, we take a look back at 2022, the year the pandemic “ended,” and the social and political developments that led covid to be so deeply normalized by the end of the year
@RepStephenMeeks
Truck driving takes a tool. In a study by NIOSH researchers, 69% of truck drivers were obese, 51% smoke cigarettes, 14% had diabetes (double the general pop.). So I’m guessing our dude is going to have some health care expenses...
@RepStephenMeeks
Anyway, let’s say he makes 50K a year. If he paid no taxes and had literally zero bills, pocketed every single penny he made, yeah, he’d me a “millionaire”. Now we all know sitting for long periods of time is bad for our health. So driving for 10+ hours a day can’t be good.
@Sblahov
Isn’t there a whole thing too where breastfeeding is promoted as a way to prevent obesity in kids? There is so much ableism wrapped up in all of it.
@ashishkjha
What are the minimum ventilation standards? How many districts have implemented them? Where’s the data showing the majority of buildings are prepared for reopening with a variant like this? What enforcement mechanism exists to ensure this has happened?
To suggest a disabled person who gets SSDI is living large on mutual aid? I just cannot fathom being such an asshole. My disabled son gets SSI. SSA checks our bank account every single month to ensure we don’t earn more income than we’re allowed. We can’t have any savings.
@ashishkjha
My high risk 4 year old is in the exact same place he was in March 2020: stuck in our house because this country views disabled people as disposable.
@DrLeanaWen
@_beccaharrison
@WHCOVIDResponse
Wowwwwww. My preschooler is high risk. Should we just “get on with it” and have him contract COVID knowing it’ll likely cause him severe illness and possibly death? Would love your medical opinion on the matter.
@LindseyGrahamSC
@realDonaldTrump
I must have missed the rally where Bernie Sanders offered to pay the legal fees of his supporters if they were arrested for assault. 🤔
@TheAngryEpi
Young kids have been abandoned. My kid can’t reliably mask bc of his disabilities and he’s too young for vaccines. So, we’re stuck. At home. Where we’ve been since March 2020.
@SecCardona
Y’all love data and accountability so much - so show us the data. How many districts used their American Rescue Plan funding to upgrade ventilation?
sending love to disabled people whose social worlds have been severely circumscribed by the continued inaccessibility of public life (both before the pandemic & currently as it rages on unchecked). you deserve so much more. 🖤
Maybe MAYBE if morgues were filled with kids, they might intervene. But the fact remains that most of the kids that will die will be disabled kids, poor kids and/or kids of color, so easy to ignore.
Some people are more likely than others to become very sick or die from

People who are at increased risk, and those who live or visit with them, need to take precautions to protect themselves from getting COVID-19.

It would also help if the “female founder in Ohio” wasn’t an ex-McKinsey person who pretended her husband worked in “manufacturing” & who made a bespoke to-do list app for the wealthy. Idk tho ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
ALSO let me point out that for people receiving disability benefits, the child tax credit has an even bigger impact because it's money that can't be used against them to lower their benefit.
Reminder now that Build Back Better is dead, families won’t receive the Child Tax Credit next month. Treasury data showed that 305,000 children in West Virginia qualified for the credit and the state received $80,711,000 overall from it
@atleastiknowi
@DataDrivenMD
Blind people exist! Autistic people who don’t make eye contact exist! People who can’t interpret facial expressions exist! It’s actually fine & human interaction continues anyway.
@thrasherxy
My kid is on a medically necessary specialty formula and it’s been backordered for months, so we haven’t gotten any cans covered by Medicaid like we’re supposed to. 1 can costs $50-$60 and lasts him 1.5 days.
@drlucymcbride
Lucy, maybe you could take this as an opportunity to reflect on how harmful you’ve been in the pandemic policy sphere, especially as it relates to COVID outcomes for minoritized groups in the US. Your concern for the vulnerable is transparent as hell. Nobody’s buying it 😘
- vending machine area tucked in corner of cafeteria
- unmasked staff in hallways
- unmasked staff in patient & staff only elevators to go to x-ray
- staff at x-ray unmasked when answering door to let us in
IIRC, only one doctor wore an N95. All other staff in surgical masks.
@ashishkjha
@EricTopol
@CDCgov
Give me the definition of “resolving symptoms” and tell me who is going to enforce mask wearing for five days after they return to work. I’ll wait.
@Imani_Barbarin
When I had an ectopic pregnancy, I learned that Fallopian tubes are not directly attached to the ovaries and the eggs just sorta meander around ?? And they can even float over to the Fallopian tube on the opposite side ????
