“Administrative costs” are a very large percentage of any NIH grant. The “administrative costs” is money given directly to the university (or sponsoring entity) and not to the NIH funded researchers. When a University boasts about their cumulative research funding what they are bragging about is how much money that the institution is receiving from the NIH and other agencies…and not the actual research.
