update: they did not neuter him… they spayed her!!
this dude managed to eat all of the food out of the trap without setting it off. in fact, he entered and exited the trap 5 total times to get more food that i sprinkled there to further entice him he finally got trapped on attempt 6 and is now getting neutered 🥳
