On this day in 1941, Churchill gave his "Give us the tools" speech in which he called for the USA to help Britain fight the Axis powers. He recited a poem sent to him in a letter from President Roosevelt - Longfellow's 'The Building of a Ship' - a copy of which is @ChartwellNT.

@ScruffyRests @ChartwellNT I believe it's in a private collection, though it was kindly loaned to the Churchill War Rooms @I_W_M at few years ago:

@StAndrewsMN Thanks so much, @StAndrewsMN. I'm so glad you've enjoyed it. There may well be a sequel... or, quite possibly, a *prequel*. βοΈπ

I'm delighted to reveal that I'm going to be interviewed by the legendary Brian Lamb of @cspan, on his Booknotes+ podcast, to discuss 'Churchill's Citadel'. We'll be recording next week, so it should be out in the not-too-distant future - So keep your eyes peeled for updates. π

To those who send heartfelt notes to authors, thank you. I've had a few since 'Churchill's Citadel' was published, most recently from someone whose father had just passed away, saying that mine was the last book his father read, and that it brought joy to his final weeks. I can't begin to express how much that meant to me.

Looking forward to speaking (virtually) for the Army and Navy Club in Washington D.C. at 1.00pm EST on Thursday. I'll be sharing the remarkable stories of 'Churchill's Citadel' @ChartwellNT, and the meetings he held there in the 1930s that prepared him for his wartime leadership.

"Pablo Picasso got down on his knees to look. What he was looking at was a firmly painted picture of a red brick Riviera villa, at a preview of a Paris exhibition. The charming villa, La Dragonnière at Cap Martin, rose from a brilliant green meadow dotted with gnarled olive trees. When he had finished looking, Painter Picasso said: "If that man were a painter by profession, he would have no trouble earning a good living ." The signature on the canvas: Winston Churchill." - Time Magazine, 1945 Image: Winston Churchill painting in his studio @ChartwellNT

RT @Andy_Taggart: March, 1939, when many still believed that Munich, September, 1938, was a great achievement, Churchill told the truth.β¦

On this day 60 years ago, Winston Churchill's state funeral took place. My first exhibition @ChartwellNT was to mark the 50th anniversary, and included an original copy of the plans for 'Operation Hope Not', lent to @ChartwellNT by the Duke of Norfolk. That decade flew by.

Wonderful to see the 'Churchill in Cartoons' exhibition at @I_W_M at last. It was a pleasure to be on its advisory panel, as well as supporting the inclusion of this early cartoon of Churchill from 1917, on loan from @ChartwellNT. Hats off to all involved in its creation. π©βοΈ
