I remember Section 28. I remember being gay being equated to child predation and rape. Now I'm listening to the exact same arguments being made in the Scottish Parliament with trans people the target this time. It's appalling
I assume the local councils who are buying these have undertaken a robust EIA as limiting the time people can sit on the loo will affect disabled people and those with chronic health conditions
I was once told by an academic that qual research is just 'fannying around chatting to people'...I have found that quants researchers, including those from STEMM are really quite surprised at how hard qual work is once they give it a go
It's a small request, but if you are not striking please observe the digital picket. This means not sharing research news, calls for papers, eventbrite links etc.
These can wait until Monday
Please do not cross the digital picket line

I am absolutely delighted to be able to announce that we secured a large grant from
@EPSRC
to improve the working conditions of disabled researchers. I can't say how excited I am to be leading on this!
I've known Professor Alison Phipps for many years. Alison was the first person to encourage me to take on leadership roles.
One of the best feminists I have had the pleasure of working with.
I stand in solidarity with Alison.
Given that so many people (especially some women) seem determined to say period poverty doesn't exist or question the truthfulness of Danielle Rowley's recent experience, here are a few points on
#periodpoverty
So this is my exciting professional news. Over the summer we will be launching this (as yet unnamed centre) and I'm delighted to say I will be Centre Director.
Proud to say that
@katesang
will be heading up a new research centre in
@heriotwatt_soss
@ebs_global
to explore issues around employment. And intersections with gender will be one of core research themes
@ClaudiaWebbe
Many academics would prefer there were no fees at all, but please don't continue to devalue the incredible work we are putting into ensuring a high quality education for our students (who we care about)
A reminder. The digital picket means not promoting your work during the strike days. This includes your workshop, your successful grant, your (or someone else's) wonderful paper. Unlike striking, it's free! I'll do my best to promote ECA's work on the days we aren't striking.
I am generally quite tempered on social media regarding negotiations and the dispute. However we are being offered *nothing* here by the employers. There is no offer beyond more talks and non on the pay offer. I have voted no and I urge others to vote no

‘Too greedy’: mass walkout at global science journal over ‘unethical’ fees
I'm ok with a below inflation pay rise again because I have my excellent final salary, I mean career average, defined benefit, I mean part defined benefit & part defined contribution, I mean defined contribution pension to look forward to.
I am trying to follow as many Afghani feminists as possible so I can learn more and also amplify their voices. Who would you recommend I follow? Thanks
Brave women of Poland, out on the streets, protesting against the new extreme abortion ban... so many women all around the world are supporting you... with solidarity, sisterhood. Let women choose!

I am ambivalent about the Captain Tom phenomenon. He is clearly an incredible person who is motivated to do good for the health service. However, I feel he's being exploited to further the 'hero' narrative and to distract from the underfunding of the NHS
That's my pension cut to £9500 a year. I'm a professor and mine will be better than others.
It's increasingly clear to me that the universities would rather we didn't have pensions and are happy for us to live in poverty after we retire
BREAKING: The Universities Superannuation Scheme Joint Negotiating Committee has today formally voted to implement cuts to future

benefits for tens of thousands of UK university sector staff.
Strikes require making challenging decisions, and come at a cost to those who strike, beyond the lost pay. Many of us have had to cancel research activities during stikes including conferences and workshops. Choosing to go ahead does have material impact on industrial relations.
Anyone who thinks that UK academia is full of 'leftists' indoctrinating young minds with social justice warrior manifestos should look at what some academics are saying about Stormzy
A provisional driving licence costs £34 online, the min charge for a passport is £75.50. These are prohibitive costs for many people who are living and working at or below the poverty line. People proposing this know it, and that's why they propose it. Look at who supports it
HEC were in an impossible position. Members' vote impossible to interpret, BDM outcome v clear on one question, not so clear on the other. But HEC are the people we have elected (and trusted) to make decisions for us.

that's representative democracy
Met this cautious catto today. 10/10 for pigeon spotting talents, 100/10 for looks, 1000/10 for knowing better than to speak to the likes of me.
@thecatreviewer
The last few months have been very difficult. 'Thank you' doesn't seem adequate to acknowledge the support I've had. But Thank You to all those who have taken the time to get in touch. You've made me feel cared about.
.
@ucu
members would be advised to read this alternative assessment of the Acas negotiations.
If this offer isn't good enough for Unison to even put to members for consultation - why would UCU consider it to be worth us calling off our action?
It represents no substantive improvement on the original pay offer, so our the Higher Education Service Group Executive have decided not to waste members time with another consultation, and move directly to a strike ballot. We will be recommending that you vote yes for action.
Can I ask academics of any level of seniority how many hours a week they reckon they work. My current estimate is over 100. I am a mug. But what is the norm in real life. ?
It never crossed my mind that I would even be nominated for this award. To be the recipient shows that disability and gender inclusion matters and must be achieved. Thank you to those who nominated my work.
Yes I'm going to say it again. Please observe the digital picket while branches are on strike, irrespective of whether your branch is striking. Sharing of research news etc can wait.

I used to believe this, but the longer I have been an academic I have realised I don't agree anymore. Teaching and research are inextricably entangled (whether that be content or skills). I am also sceptical that there are few academics who can do both.
This is a good piece. As someone with asthma I am scared of getting coronavirus and it frustrates me when people comment & shrug that it 'only' kills people with underlying conditions.
I’ve laughed at how news reports on coronavirus all conclude, “but don’t worry, only people with underlying health conditions die!” This is good on the anxiety that creates - and how you’re not alone if you’re having a wee worry (and do ask for support).
Honestly this is true. You are not in competition to get the smoothest viva. Once you have your PhD *noone* asks if you got major/minor/resubmission. I've seen so much distress because of getting revisions as if it's not a pass.
This is brilliant and spot on. No corrections vs minor corrections often depends on the examiner, and a thesis after 'major' corrections may come out better than one that got no corrections. Neither has (or should have) any bearing on future success.
Universities are positioning themselves as training grounds for employment - that's not what we are for (never has been really). To be blunter, the pursuit of profit is what has got the world to the terrible state it's in & isn't sustainable
Hey
@BBC
time for you to update your style guide? Why are those with PhDs in STEM worthy of the title Dr, but those with social science/humanities not?

I’m going to take a social media break. I keep thinking of the fear so many will be feeling right now. In the meantime - join a union, look out for the most vulnerable in society, protest, make your MP know how you feel and don’t normalise whatever is to come.
I'm really delighted that I will be taking on the role of UCU Scotland Equality Officer after Congress next May. Can't wait to get involved (a good showing from
@UCU_HWUBranch
members!)
I've had two papers accepted for publication in the last two weeks which had gone multiple rejections. They both mean a lot to me and have considerable emotional resonance.
Delighted to have a paper accepted
@IJERPH_MDPI
'Blood work: Managing menstruation, menopause and gynaecological health conditions in the workplace'. With
@JK_Remnant
@TomCalvard
@katie_myhill
We propose a new framework for understanding how menstrual blood is managed at work
I am seeing quite a few CfPs in relation to CV19 which are not linked to treatments, vaccines or harms caused to vulnerable groups. It makes me uncomfortable to view this crisis for humanity as a publication opportunity.
For standing up to racism
@PriyamvadaGopal
is facing a barrage of racist abuse on twitter today. If you have 10 minutes go through and report as many as possible.
I see the nuclear bomb question had made a reappearance. It's a terrible question anyway, but asking it on Armistice Day and berating anyone for being hesitant to use a weapon designed to kill millions is beyond bad taste.
I hate the Grand National. Hate it. I hate all horse racing but the National is so lauded. Horses deserve so much better. Will do all I can to avoid any news of it today.
There’s definitely a growing interest in EDI work. That interest needs to be matched by adequate resources which recognise the work and expertise that goes into those activities. In short. EDI work is not cheap or free!
Just put my out of office on before starting 3 days of strike action tomorrow to

end the gender, disability and race pay gaps,

If you can't strike, please don't cross the virtual picket
@chiller
@JRhodesPianist
I saw similar in Edinburgh last year. It's upsetting for those who help and witness, but can only hope for a better tomorrow and future.
@ClaudiaWebbe
I am really disappointed to see this from you. We are working harder than ever to produce, deliver and assess learning materials, while we manage our own lives and health during a global pandemic.
So
@eddiemarsan
is being hammered as a class traitor because he says he prefers to drink at home with friends and food, due to childhood experiences of pub culture and male violence. Well done, comrades! Fine dining should be reserved for our revolutionary leaders.
Today was amazing. The STUC congress was inspiring as we planned for the future. I was a first-time speaker representing
@UCUScotland
and received the
@ScottishTUC
equality award, presented by
@ScotGovFM
@NicolaSturgeon
- sadly not in person (the only slight disappointment!).
BBC Breakfast arguing that it's illegal to pay men and women differently so the gender pay gap must be down to women working part time, or not in senior roles...neglecting to mention the gap persists even in same roles
Could I ask a wee favour of my friends? I appreciate the support but could I ask that friends don't send me news articles etc. I need to take care of my well-being and it's very difficult to do that with the regular reminders
I see it's time to kick universities and academics again. I've never worked as hard or as intensively as I have done since March 2021, and I worked hard before! Everyone is exhausted but also committed to ensuring students have support & care. It's dispiriting to see the attacks
This tweet, from a major publisher's professional account, raises serious concerns. The question on sex remains the same as in previous years, with a subsequent gender identity q added for *better* data on sex and gender. The tweet below is misleading.
So I thank
@DaniRowley
for standing up and sharing her experiences of menstruation. I'm sorry it has attracted such negative responses, including from women on the left. But the discourse is starting to change & I think we can make a real difference by eradicating period poverty
I am incredibly excited to be joining the National Galleries of Scotland as a Trustee and am looking forward to supporting the essential work of the galleries
