Let’s have a scarlet Sunday & a reminder that at some point in the early #1890s the wearer of this brilliant gown burst into a room & presumably silenced everyone within. The sheer sleeves & glow of red must have cast the rest of the party into shade. I like her @AugustaAuction

Fabric doesn’t come any richer than this. The depth of purple cancels out the requirement for additional embellishment save for the spray of silk flowers framing the neckline. By the late #1880s the extreme bustle had departed leaving a smoother silhouette @TSarrou

This has always seemed like a dress forged through magic. The fabric is a shot velvet so that at one moment it is pink but with a slight shift could be green. And then the twist and drape of construction. The genius of #1950s Mme Grès @PalaisGalliera #fashionhistory

There is something especially magical about a garment that was once captured on canvas or in a photograph. It gives life to the object, reanimating it for a moment with a flash of memory. This is Louise Pomeroy by John Singer #Sargent in this red velvet dress, 1887 @mfaboston

It is difficult to imagine gowns such as this in motion but the sliding shift of hues created by this early #1840s taffeta must have created a chameleon-like shimmer with each movement. Perhaps the hiss of gas lamps shone across its surface as the wearer twirled by #wienmuseum

Cascades of gold leaves tumble down the skirt of a c1860 evening gown, the yellow silk beneath adding to the general glow. Twirling in candlelight, the embellishment must have glistened as the wearer danced #wienmuseum #fashionhistory

This silk overdress in dusky blue/plum is a striking piece. Aside from the fact that it is more than 200 yrs old, the background colour works beautifully with the choice of shaded green & gold silk floss embroidering the whole robe. And that under bust fastening… @cooperhewitt

As we bid farewell to 2023 & everything it threw our way, the highs & lows, I want to say a heartfelt thank you. I haven’t always been able to reply to lovely comments but I always read them & cherish your company here. Dior’s 1955 Fête Joyeuse gown rings out the year @V_and_A

Blue of an entirely different nature and the rich smoky satin of an early #1950s #CharlesJames dinner suit. Styled here with burgundy gloves, it has a sleek, muted chic to it that does not require any other embellishment, just the sculpture of cloth @metmuseum #fashionhistory

Three years and one pandemic later I have finished my vintage #woolwork panel. As a therapeutic project through COVID it was a godsend. The dog is trying to claim credit but she had no hand in this at all. Now to find the appropriate bit of wall for it…… #covidproject

Making a splash in electric #bluevelvet but we’re that not vivid enough, there is the addition of a bright beaded bouquet to scatter across the skirt. Some #1880s lushness to crank up the day. Sold via @AugustaAuction #fashionhistory

One of the earliest collections Yves Saint Laurent designed in his own right for the house of Dior in 1958 included this short crinoline style gown in soft pink. The rose theme is echoed through self coloured blooms that catch at the hem @NGVMelbourne

Descending comets dazzle across this black velvet sky in an early #1920s #eveningcoat by Yvonne May. The skill embedded in the #embellishment gives a sense of movement to the celestial motifs as they cascade hem-wards @museumatFIT #fashionhistory

Raindrops against a light cloud of organza sprinkled lightly in this 1958 #YvesSaintLaurent for #Dior dress. The facets of embellishment must have twinkled when the skirt moved. A dizzying kaleidoscope of refracted light @NewfieldsToday #fashionhistory

In the pink this morning with a rosy robe a la francaise. The #1760s gown displays the deep Watteau pleat complete with expert pattern matching, the brocade floral motifs sitting side by side in silky symmetry @BunkaGakuenUniv #fashionhistory

It has been years since I visited the Bowes Museum but their display has always stayed with me. The use of transparent mounts allows a view not only of the outside of the garment but the inner workings too, a unique insight into construction. Dress, #1850s @fashionatbowes

Tea gowns ought to make a comeback as the days shorten & mists hang in the valleys. The creation of robes made for the western market from #Japanese textiles had gained in popularity, the blend of cultural styles apparent in fabric & silhouette in this #1880s gown #coraginsburg

Apart from its obvious sunny cheer, this robe a l’anglaise is testament to the skill of the embroiderer. The blue silk chain stitch was worked after the gown was constructed, a flow of blooms running over seams as if they had blossomed later & by surprise. 1770s @colonialwmsburg

The black sash of this c1912 evening dress cuts a bold swathe down the centre back, starkly contrasting with the brightness of the orange silk and overlay of silvery lace. It emphasises the fashionably high waist so distinctive of this period. Sold via @KerryTaylorAuct #glamfrock

I have travelled east to give an @TheArtsSociety_ lecture on the life & work of Mariano Fortuny tomorrow in Andover. It is always a pleasure to introduce his ideas around dress to people who have not encountered him. Here is the peplos style in emerald, mid #1930s @philamuseum

Recalling skirts layered a la disposition in the #1850s , #MaggyRouff created a modern interpretation of the crinolined style exactly a century later. Here the tulle skirts have been cut into deep scallops. Collection unknown, anyone? #fashionhistory

It may appear that the black roses scattered across this Prussian blue silk must be woven or embroidered but they have been painted onto the fabric. It is an exuberant late #1950s design by Luis Estévez pulling out all of the mid century glamorous stops @MuseumofCityNY #fifties

#Halston dresses are often long columns of silk jersey or chiffon but this rich red drifts around the knees in a shorter layered gown. The loose bow sits at the hip. Add a pair of sling backs and a clutch bag and you have a heavenly #seventies ensemble @NewfieldsToday

If dresses were sweets, this #1880s silk gown would surely be a dark chocolate cherry liqueur all rich and glossy. The mulberry silk has a figured floral pattern that is just different enough from the rich brown satin to make contrasting panels. Scrumptious….. @AugustaAuction

Grassy green satin plaid once again puts paid to the myth that nineteenth century dress was all sepia hues worn by unsmiling dour women. Life was colourful and varied then as now and clothes were full of personality. #1860s gown @MuseeMcCordStew #fashionhistory
