Making money off the backs of greater fools -- that's lucrative. Putting the crypto grift behind you -- that's valuable.

You’re not alone. Get clear of the crypto grift, and you’ll discover that hard work and learnings from trying to make blockchains work — yes, even in defiance of common sense and the laws of physics — are good training for having an impact on less stupid things. Join us back in the real world.

@SilvermanJacob Thanks Jacob. As I continue to prune my feed from a misspent decade in blockchain, the knuckleheads you point out are usually folks I needed to unfollow/etc. wish there were an automation to do it more efficiently, but day by day, the unstupidification proceeds.

@DPatrioticvet @DefiyantlyFree @SenatorCollins You know it’s the Trumplixans who are the Rinos, right? Populism — right or left — usually doesn’t end well. I miss the actual republicans.

@OpenAI Will this be available to use via API so that we can take advantage of this capability for our users? Variety of ways we could employ this to solve some gnarly practical problems like searching for the best current sales of an item our user might like to buy in their collection.

@lumarian6 @molly0xFFF When someone says the other side is so far X that they’re unable to see their bias, I think, “Wow, this guy has his Y so far up his Z that he can’t see his own A.” ;)

@ClevelandsSword @JoeConsorti Vitalik Buterin is, certainly was in my experience of him, a fine human being. You will never hear me utter an ill word about him. Not sure what I’m supposed to be laughing about. Nothing funny about seeing amazing talent and good people stuck in the crypto inferno.

I recall red being pretty into restricting everything from TV programming to video games. But hey…what used to be red/right/conservative has suddenly been pushed out in favor of whatever populist hot mess we just got today. It is so weird to see people labeled “republicans” who do more weed/etc than 1970s hippies. #throughTheLookingGlass

Got this from perplexity (prompting it to be balanced and skeptical of spin on all sides): The relationship between conservative efforts and free speech in recent years is complex and multifaceted. A careful examination of the evidence reveals a nuanced picture with actions on multiple sides that have raised concerns about free expression. Legislative Efforts and Book Bans Conservative lawmakers have introduced numerous bills aimed at restricting certain topics in educational settings: •As of February 2022, there were 61 censorship bills proposed in 24 states, with some legislators wanting teachers to pay $10,000 for teaching certain topics like “critical race theory”. •In 2023, educational gag orders in K-12 schools shifted emphasis to bills restricting speech about LGBTQ+ topics and identities. •Florida enacted a law in 2023 banning public colleges from spending money on diversity, equity and inclusion programs. There has also been a significant increase in book ban attempts, particularly targeting books addressing race, gender, and sexuality: •The American Library Association documented over 1,200 challenges to books in 2022, a substantial rise from 729 in 2021. •More than 2,500 unique titles were targeted in 2022, the highest number in over 20 years of tracking. •Conservative groups like Moms for Liberty have amplified calls for book removals in multiple states. However, it’s important to note that book challenges come from various sources, not just conservatives. Some liberal-leaning efforts have also targeted books with racist or offensive language. Social Media and Tech Platforms The debate over free speech on social media platforms has intensified: •Florida and Texas passed laws in 2021 that fine social media platforms for deplatforming political candidates and prohibit them from “censoring” users. •The Supreme Court recently heard arguments on these laws, with some justices expressing concerns about their impact on free speech. Elon Musk and Twitter/X Elon Musk’s actions as owner of Twitter/X have been controversial and sometimes contradictory: •Musk initially positioned himself as a “free speech absolutist” but has taken actions that seem to contradict this stance. •He removed blue checkmarks from users who criticized his policies and banned journalists who reported on certain topics. •Under Musk’s leadership, X has suspended over four times as many accounts in the first half of 2024 as Twitter ever did during similar periods. •Musk has also complied with government requests for account takedowns in countries like Turkey, India, and Brazil. Counterarguments and Nuance It’s crucial to consider alternative perspectives: •Some conservatives argue that their efforts are aimed at protecting children from inappropriate content or ensuring balanced viewpoints in education. Liberals make similar claims about preventing misinformation from jeopardizing health and safety. •Supporters of social media regulations claim they are necessary to prevent censorship of conservative voices online. •Musk has defended his actions as necessary to combat spam, misinformation, and illegal content. Conclusion While there is evidence of conservative-led efforts to restrict certain forms of speech, particularly in educational settings and on social media platforms, the situation is not black and white. Both conservative and liberal groups have engaged in actions that could be seen as limiting free expression in various contexts. The debate over free speech in the digital age remains complex and evolving, with legitimate concerns and arguments on multiple sides.

@jgebbia Tale as old as time. The party that trashes the hotel room then blames it on the maid always looks good for a time. It’s an excellent grift, if you can get the timing right. Let’s see how it goes from here, and let’s hope history is not a guide this time.
