A big tax perk for certain political appointments is the ability to defer taxes while diversifying investments. Under §1043, you can sell a highly appreciated asset, invest in a fund, and not pay any capital gains taxes until you sell that fund. The rule even applies to trusts!

Just like every year for the past 20 years, HR25 was recently introduced in Congress to repeal the income tax, abolish the IRS, and enact a national sales tax. The percentage chances of the bill passing this year are in the low to mid-zeros.

If you’re just getting started with a career in tax, don’t worry if everything seems overly complicated and confusing. It will still feel that way decades later.
