Excellent pick-up by Friedman/Burke/Marek here ... Department of Player Safety should use this as a teaching vid. Benn could’ve ruined a vulnerable opponent, onus is on hitter to avoid the head, he wisely passed where a few years ago few most players would’ve lit the guy up.
Canucks assistant sees Horvat’s on a breakaway and goes with the “If I watch I’ll jinx it I’ll just look down and cross my fingers” option, gets rewarded. No immediate hug though 😞
Been waiting a long time to send these tweets, as I’ve been eager to share this loud and clear: Hi, my name is Justin Bourne, and I’m an alcoholic. I’m in a good place now, but yeah … it’s been a journey. 🧵
Carey Price congratulating his mother for being re-elected Chief, just after Indigenous People’s Day in Canada, in the wake of all the awful news surrounding Canada’s residential schools, felt particularly powerful.
Every single NHL team should see Vegas’ success and think, “hey, maybe we should give that buried player who we insert in the lineup every fourth game for 10 mins a better opportunity? Maybe he can do more with a legit chance?”
My favourite part of the Olympics is watching a sport I never watch for like 9 mins then becoming an expert on it. “Ah, the tuck on the second backflip was way too loose, brutal.”
The Sens rolled back a 5-1 lead on the Leafs and got the Habs coach fired, they can basically put their feet up and call their season a success at this point
Challenging days for a lot of people right now so we feel super-blessed to have had such a great one today. Weighing in at seven pounds, introducing Molly Annabelle Bourne. Momma’s doing great 👍🏻.
Some of the smartest people I know in sports love environments like this. None of it is ever personal, but holding your tongue only limits everyone else’s real knowledge. Takes secure leaders to allow it and not feel threatened.
As many already know, my father left us Friday evening after a brief, but aggressive battle with cancer. Our hearts are shattered. 💔
To so many he was known as a fierce hockey player who was part of hockey history, but to us, he was a man who devoted his life to taking care of
Just to get this out there, the NHL not allowing pride tape this year is an absolute joke. The league didn’t want to force a handful of guys to wear a pride jersey, so no more jerseys. That’s one choice. It’s another entirely to restrict players freedom to express their beliefs.
It’s awesome they made these, and an awesome accomplishment that’s awesome to celebrate ... ... ... But I cannot believe someone let them go out to print with “1768th NHL GAMES”
A semi-controversial take of mine: Of Ovechkin’s best day, and Crosby’s, and Malkin’s, I’m not sure Malkin’s isn’t the most unstoppable. He’s just SO big and slick and rangy and smart and mean and lord can can he fire it ... it’s just such a rare, exceptional package.
We just want to say thanks to everyone for the tremendous outpouring of love and support. Clark was a giant of a man, an inspiration, so loving and loved. I know this leaves a hole in the heart of many Long Islanders. If you’d like to donate to his charity
The most scathing review I heard of the Sabres this season came from Casey Middlestadt, who went to Colorado and simply said "boy they practice hard here."
If you owned a pro sports franchise and *one of your players* stepped up to pay for your staff that lost work in all this, would you not be embarrassed?
Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo says he will donate $100,000 to the Bucks' staff at Fiserv Forum. Kevin Love made the same commitment for Cavaliers' arena staff on Thursday.
Alright I’ve watched it a handful more times, and heard Elliotte explain it, and reached my conclusion: that’s still offside. Let’s not galaxy brain this thing, that’s “control” for me by Makar, he has it, player isn’t out, offside.
People forget Mario Lemieux almost ended a goalie's life mid-game. (I like to imagine a breakaway on like, Ben Bishop in 2020 somehow ending this way.)
@BlakeMurphyODC
Omfg Blake wtf is that? You can go back to that a day later and make sense of it? You can both watch the action and write all that? I am. im. pressed.
The AHL is such a crazy example for how raw skill isn’t enough. Some guys can shoot it 108, some can skate a lap in 13.3. Yet that ain’t enough to guarantee a big league job.
Guerin is such an awesome guy. Tell the story all the time, but whatever, once more: the year I was at Isles camp he was talking about his four kids being in [insert zillion things, sports music etc].
Me: That must be expensive.
Guerin: Well not to be a dick, but I’m rich.

If you asked me a couple days ago what Scott Moir could do to be more popular with Canadians I’da been like “nothing. He’s maxed out.” Can’t believe I overlooked “get gooned at the women’s gold medal game and show up on camera with a proper pint while yelling at the refs.” Legend
Imagine being a 6’5” third liner who was just healthy scratched, and not finishing this hit. Accepting that Engvall has flaws (or he’d be worth 7m a year) can be very hard, given his tools.
And so, thank you. I’m beyond grateful for my family, for the support of SN, and honestly for all of you. It feels great to get this out there, and to get to be who I really am in public once again. ❤️
Seeing Shohei Ohtani strikeout Mike Trout on a devastating sequence of pitches has me freshly mad we haven't got to see McDavid vs. Leon or Matthews vs. Marner or hell, Sid WITH McDavid even though their career are going to overlap for like a decade. Hockey fans have been robbed.
Imagine being the person who’s gonna watch NHL hockey next month then file a formal complaint about hearing additional swears (given no crowd). Imagine!
Son’s first NHL game last night and could not have been more special. Thanks to the Islanders and Leafs for helping out, he was positively BEAMING getting to dap up the players on the way out. 🥺❤️
The one on the bottom left is the most important in my collection - 24 hours, called the "desire chip" cause all it means is you have the desire to stop drinking. Rehab/aftercare coins in the middle, months along the bottom, years along the top - today is, somehow, five.
There’s gonna be like 8 guys in the league who realize nobody expects to get hit anymore who just feast, and if Dahlin becomes one of them, I am here for it. What a player.
My favourite year on Rasmus Dahlin's EliteProspects page is 2014-15, where you can see the evaluators going "OK, we'll start him here and see how he does. OK, he needs more of a challenge. OK, he needs more of a challenge. Geezus. OK, I guess he needs more of...." (GP, G, A, PTS)
Ron MacLean on Hockey Central tonight with a very very Ron MacLean sign-off prepping for tomorrow’s return of hockey: “After four and a half months of isolation...ice-elation.” Bravo.
Man. I know this point has been made a hundred times this year but an audit of how Chiarelli's moves with the Oilers have panned out ... my god. If your buddy made the same ones in fantasy hockey you wouldn't let him in your league the next year.
Just cannot believe that in late January 36-year-old Alex Ovechkin is ahead of Prime Connor McDavid in flat-out points, even for a moment and with a handful more games played. It's truly incredible.
The career-starting schedule for Connor Bedard is absolutely wild. At Crosby and the Penguins, back-to-backed with the Bruins in Boston, then Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal, closing with Monday at the Leafs in Toronto. First 7 days, welcome to the league, kid.
Maybe the most arrogant thing I’ve heard is Hockey Canada implying that major change to their crumbling organization somehow puts organized hockey at risk, “will the lights stay on at the rinks?” etc etc. Ya. We’ll still be playing hockey, thanks.
The Kings are apparently willing to trade Ilya Kovalchuk. Act now and you can acquire a slightly better than 0.5 PPG one-dimensional player under contract until 2021 at $6.25 mill per!
Going through an old bin of jerseys at Mom’s would you care to see some? Stating with, Dad’s game worn Islanders jersey, has to be from the 70s, can’t get over the weight of it. The letters/numbers themselves gotta weigh five pounds:
Been battling some pretty heavy anxiety. Written three things I couldn’t bring myself to publish in the last two weeks alone. I’m fine, great support system and taking steps to allleviate it. But yeah man ... it’s a fight 👍🏻

I guess getting rodeo’d by Dubois last night doesn’t count because he took a penalty too(?), but random fun fact that surprised me: at 5v5 through 26 games Austin Matthews has drawn zero (0) penalties.
If you grew up playing hockey, a request: tell me what or how much ministicks meant to you, or give me your favourite ministicks stories. My son got his first net this weekend, and it was really special for me, I love the game so much. Kid still has some work to do.
Say what you will about Erik Karlsson's game, it's flat-out insane that he's got more 5v5 points than prime Connor McDavid this season. The league's top-10:
Like if fighting is going to be a part of hockey - and it currently is - I don’t really understand what the game plan of refs seems to be these days. Like, they’re gonna fight. Either let them go, or get aggressive and stop it? Not sure how this is supposed to help.
The Blackhawks are one of just two teams in the NHL without a win so far this season (0-4-1), and they’re down 4-1 to Detroit in their own barn tonight. Their next opponent is the Leafs on Weds. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
On this day in 1980, in Game 5 of the quarterfinals between the Islanders and Bruins, Clark Gillies and Terry O'Reilly had a spirited bout in the second period. It was the first of two fights for O'Reilly that game

Give Keefe credit - Willy could’ve been a step lower to help on Mangiapane, has been in the dog house ... Keefe still has the guy on the ice - as he should - when the team needs to get one back. Not every coach operates that logically and unemotionally
Why yes of course, I, a person who professionally consumes hockey news every day - particularly that of Canadian teams - was aware that there’s an outdoor game ... *googles* ... tomorrow? Ahem, yes, tomorrow, of course. Flames/Jets. That info’s been evwrywhere(?).
This McDavid burst ‘n’ dangle last night is stuck in my mind. Like Jensen may as well have been defending a ghost, I don’t think at any point he touches the puck, McDavid’s stick, or so much as his jersey. Just trying to defend air.
Boy I do not get the Murray thing. Trade screams analytics people throwing up their hands and going “Nobody can figure out who’s a good goalie anyway, maybe Murray bounces back and hey, free assets” or something. But Matt Murray at $4.68x2, I just cannot believe that’s the plan.
I don’t wanna be that guy, cause this electronic board thing is quicker and all that (and I guess who cares?), but boy is there something more satisfying about watching a guy blow up a real target.
Tyler Ennis ALMOST just scored a lacrosse goal, but Dante Fabbro says HELL NO.
I swear I just said 10 minutes ago that Ennis could score a lacrosse goal with the hands he has. I say he does it this season.
