I’m confident that we’ll figure out how to put this thing together, but I’m also aware that for the next project, we’ll be back at square one.

Focus on smaller outcomes instead. Ask: What are the human behaviors that drive business results? How can you get people to do more of those things? How will you know if you’re right? Answer those questions effectively, and the impact will come.

With that in mind, can you take a customer-centric approach to internal problems, solutions, and even products and services? What are your colleagues’ goals? What value can you offer them to get them to “buy” the change you are selling?

I went for it. It resonated—a lot. There just wasn’t a place where you could get an explanation of that one idea. The book filled a need. It helped that it was short, too. It doesn’t hurt to have a wife who will tell you when you’ve screwed up, either.

She was right—In most polarizing debates, there’s usually an element of truth on both sides. It can be hard to see though, especially if your paycheck depends on your position.
