Many U.S. Christians will see these images and — because of stereotypes and bad media coverage — will think they're Muslim. But these are our fellow Christians — Palestinians who also suffer from the unjust situation in Israel/Palestine.
Friends, I’m currently working on the section of my new book about liberal Islamophobia, and curious what you think are the most illustrative and important examples of Islamophobia on the left? I will cite you if I include your contribution. Thanks!
Yesterday, I brought two Muslim friends to Mass, since we’ve been discussing the Eucharist in our Christian theology class. I teared up when the responsorial psalm happened to be, “the Lord is gracious and merciful,” which is also the opening of the Qur’an and of Islamic prayer.
Last Friday, I successfully defended my dissertation and completed my PhD in Theology and Religious Studies from Georgetown! Grateful to all those, esp. my committee, who supported me along the way. And excited to share more about the project here in the future. Hoya Saxa!

for reminding Americans about the increased Islamophobia that Muslims faced under this administration. Many, including journalists and commentators, have forgotten about it in recent years so thank you for speaking to it.
It’s publication day for my book,

I hope it can help us breakdown Islamophobia and build up a better world defined by hospitality, justice, and fierce love.
My immense gratitude to those who shared their experiences + expertise with me.
Fr. Drew Christiansen, who was buried today at

Some very happy personal news: My husband and I welcomed our son, Adam Robert Duffner, in January. Thank you for your prayers in the lead-up to his delivery—both Adam and I are doing very well. A thread on the significance of his name:

Wishing a blessed Mawlid (birthday of the Prophet Muhammad) to Muslims who celebrate!
I love the stories of his cheerfulness, generosity, compassion, patience, and humility: a model for us all.
Gosh, I really hope Pope Francis will get to see the Shrine of Imam 'Ali when he visits the city of Najaf. (It's so sparkly😍✨) I read that his meeting with the Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani will take place at the Shi'a leader's home, which is not far from there.
This weekend I received the advance copy of my new book on Islamophobia, which releases next week. It looks GREAT!
A lot of thought went into the cover. It features an Islamic geometric pattern of interlocking stars & crosses, an artistic motif that Christians also adopted.
Some exciting news to share: My husband and I are expecting our first child in just a couple of weeks! If you pray, please offer one up for our growing family. We can’t wait to meet this little one very soon. 🥰👶🏼👨👩👦
Today is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, a beloved saint for Catholics. Many aren’t aware of his encounter with a Muslim sultan, Malik al-Kamil, which scholars believe influenced his spirituality deeply.
Excited to share that I've been appointed to serve on the National Catholic-Muslim Dialogue by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops!
Background on the dialogue, from 2017:
One million Muslims are reportedly being held in Chinese internment camps. China says they're "hospitals" meant to cure an "ideological illness."

Another reminder of the ways that religious and racial discrimination are public health issues.

Listening to a

Today is the first birthday of my book, Finding Jesus among Muslims! To celebrate, two giveaways:
1) A free, signed copy for a Catholic high school or public library.
2) A free, signed copy for an individual.

asked if France would ever dare to mock Islam. Well, they are not allowing French athletes to wear the hijab at the games. Policies like this are a gross affront to religious belief and practice, and seem more worthy of our attention and outrage. 1/2

Below is the Arabic phrase, "there is no god but God"—the first part of the Muslim profession of faith. It sounds like this: "La ilaha illa Allah." When I first heard it recited by a friend, I was very struck by its beauty. May our lives be a testament to that truth.
The most beautiful refrain a pair of lips could ever utter
لا إله إلا الله
Rolls off the tongue like butter
لا إله إلا الله
Clearing away the soul’s clutter

Islamophobia is not just about negative political rhetoric and hate crimes. It also about government spying on Muslims and law enforcement attempts to goad Muslims into criminal activity. This is an awful story, and a must-read.
My traumatizing experience in 2018 with a spy, government surveillance, and attempted entrapment (THREAD)
This is the first time I share this story publicly, because I need this documented and I am no longer afraid.
Eid Mubarak to my Muslim friends near and far! I’m grateful for your companionship and all I’ve learned from you. Thank you for witnessing to the peace that comes from loving God, for embodying God’s rahmah in our world.

Five years ago, when Pope Francis was elected, I could not have imagined the extent or depth of his outreach to our Muslim brothers and sisters.
I am so grateful for his example of what it means to be a Christian in dialogue with those of others faiths.

Someone asked the Prophet Muhammad, "What is Islam?"
He replied: "Patience and magnanimity."
Then the person asked, "Then what is iman, belief?"
He replied, "Goodness in speech and offering others food."

Wishing Muslim friends everywhere a blessed Ramadan. How special that Ramadan and Lent—our seasons of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—overlap. This year, we hold in our hearts those in Gaza and everywhere who are being starved, and all who yearn for freedom and justice.
The word ‘terrorism’ has lost any useful meaning in public discourse. In news media, it is almost solely used to describe violence committed by people who are Muslim, and is rarely used in other cases. Re-upping Prof

I briefly discuss Islamophobia as a public health issue, along with other ways Islamophobia impacts the daily lives of Muslims, in Chapter 2 of my book

The study "found that a significant number of people in the Muslim community in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area skipped their primary care appointments after the ban, and there was also an increase in their visits to the emergency department."
"When Muslims make statements critical of policies of the Israeli state, or in support of Palestinians, they are deemed to have violated the allegedly apolitical nature of interfaith cooperation, and are eliminated in favor of Muslims who remain silent..."
So rewarding and surreal to find my book in a DC bookstore this weekend. A big thank you to friends and colleagues who have asked their local brick-and-mortar shops to carry it.

The FBI’s hate crimes stats for 2017 were just released. Anti-Muslim incidents remain at high levels, and anti-Jewish incidents spiked. These concerning numbers should compel us to do much more to address Antisemitism and Islamophobia at both an interpersonal and systemic level.

These anti-Muslim comments from Cardinal Burke are absolutely unacceptable but (sadly) unsurprising. Too many Catholics share his views, but our Muslim siblings in faith should know that they don't represent the highest values of our tradition nor our official teaching.
Cardinal Burke: “to be opposed to large scale Muslim immigration is a responsible exercise of one’s patriotism.” He says “true refugees” must be helped “but this is not the case when you have large scale immigration.”
Eid Mubarak to my Muslim friends near and far! It's a lovely coincidence that as Muslims celebrate and remember the family of Abraham today, we Catholics around the world hear about them, too, at Mass.
I'm really enjoying 'The Christian Encounter with Muhammad: How Theologians have Interpreted the Prophet.' Thanks to
@charlestieszen
for graciously gifting me a copy and some others of his books. Folks should request that their library order copies!
The story is also preserved in the Islamic tradition. Muslims read Sura 18 of the Qur’an as referencing the sleepers. Numerous accounts that are extra-biblical for Christians are mentioned in the Qur’an (including the story of Anne and Joachim, who we celebrated yesterday!)
The ancient legend of the 7 Sleepers of Ephesus: 7 young Christians who escaped persecution by hiding in a cave. The cave was sealed whereupon they fell into a miraculous sleep lasting 200 yrs. They were astonished to find that Xty, a persecuted sect, was now the state religion.

When I'm called a heretic (and worse) for my work promoting Muslim-Christian understanding, that deeply hurts. When I see the ways some Catholics, including some in the hierarchy, demonize Muslims, it's hard to feel at home.

Among many US Catholics, there is a feeling (sometimes unstated and perhaps unconscious) that what goes on in Israel-Palestine is not ‘our’ issue. It’s framed as a Jewish-Muslim conflict that we can observe from a distance but that doesn’t really affect us.
My Administration has suspended the entry of refugees from terror-compromised nations such as Syria, Somalia and Yemen. Biden’s plan surges refugees 700% into Minnesota, Michigan & Pennsylvania—burdening schools & hospitals while opening the floodgates to Radical Islamic Terror.
