I successfully defended my dissertation "Prometheus Rebound: Lewis Mumford, the Ecological Crisis and the Return to Reality" today and got a 𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘢 𝘤𝘶𝘮 𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘥𝘦. This will take some time to process. Thanks to everyone who inspired and supported me! #envhum

@AndrewsonEarth "The good ol' Jevons effect," I was about to write, but I see that I wasn't first. It's remarkable how this rebound effect still is not understood and taken into account when sustainability is considered. Convenient to "forget."

I posted this quote from a 1954 talk on the other place, just to appreciate Carson's alignment of a humanist view of the good life with the care for biodiversity and environment. Humans and humanism aren't the problem, but regimentation, alienation, consumerism, megatechnics, &c.

@xriskology I think the "mechanism" is metaphor rather than the technologies themselves, and Daniel Botkin's Discordant Harmonies is interesting here (though he is way to optimistic about digital metaphors if I recall correctly). And Carolyn Merchant's The Death of Nature, of course.

@xriskology The Pentagon of Power (1970) by Lewis Mumford discusses (among other things) how technological advances have distorted our view of the organic. It's obviously old, but he does discuss digital technology too.

@LibbydeQ @ICEnvHist Thanks! Working on publishing my PhD thesis, which will be less concise but make the same case. And I agree; there's a lot of talk and theory about interdsiciplinarity, and many new frameworks, but little agreement and practice. The past provides a "best practice" of sorts.

@leemfisto @stanswitekFPS @DEADLINE I’m not arguing against regulation, just for holding the profit makers accountable. I had my own publication sold by the publisher as AI training data, without my consent and without me getting a dime for it.

@leemfisto @stanswitekFPS @DEADLINE Sure, but the ones who really steal are the human creators behind the AI (who are making the profit). I think it’s important to hold people accountable, not a mindless, mind-imitating computer program. The theft is a conscious human decision.
