My junior year of college my ERA was 17.35 🤮 Why was it so bad? Because I fell victim to the paradox of the product goal. I.e, the more I focused on it, the worse it got. Here’s what I learned that year that might help you if you’re struggling on the mound: @FlatgroundApp

I’m not saying they aren’t related. Often a mechanical issue can cause a ball flight issue. But it’s important to remember that how pitches play at the plate is where everything starts and then work backwards from there.

Fellas I hate to break the news, but you probably aren’t magically gaining 5 mph in the next 4 weeks like some experts might claim. So you better make sure you work on filling up the zone and dialing in a second pitch this month. Otherwise enjoy keeping a chart this spring.

How much better would your bullpens be if you weren’t trying to make mechanical changes, refine a pitch, and sequence hitters at the same time? Pick one thing to focus on for each pen, then be disciplined enough to stick to it.

Nothing exposes lack of command like a 9 pocket. It doesn’t move and it doesn’t frame your pitches for you. It’s either in or it’s out. And that’s why I love it so much for preseason bullpens.

Sometimes you don’t need another drill as much as you just need to understand the throw and what you need to get the most out of your delivery. Drills can help, but so can being educated about what you need to accomplish and then letting it rip until you learn what works for you

I love every aspect of pitching development: Mechanics, S&C, workload management, pitch design, etc. But the real fun stuff happens as we inch closer to the season: Competing and figuring out how to get guys out. Don’t let the first list get in the way of what your job is…

If you’ve been training nonstop all fall, there’s nothing wrong with dialing it back a bit this week. Give your mind and body a chance to recover and enjoy the holiday with the fam. Trust me, you won’t fall behind. If you haven’t trained hard, this message isn’t for you.

As the saying goes… “Preparation loves success.” What often separates high level players from low level players is their approach to training and preparation. Do the work so you are free to compete when the bullets start flying next season.
