For three generations, liberal Jewish organizations claimed that Jewish “dialogue” with other liberals and leftists would prevent anti-Semitism. It did nothing of the kind. At the same time, Jewish liberals avoided contact and alliance-building with the nationalist conservative right—both Christians and Jews. In other words, liberal Jewish organizations carefully avoided alliance-building with those on the right whose interests might be aligned with Jewish interests because they thought associating with conservatives would make them look bad. After the massacres of Oct 7, 2023, many people were sure that change was coming to liberal Judaism. We heard repeatedly that liberal Jews are “waking up.” Sure, there are a few liberal Jews whose views have shifted dramatically in the last 18 months, and who have said so publicly. More power to them. But that’s a handful of people. Where is everyone else? Most of the prominent liberal Jewish outfits are still clinging to their old policies like nothing has changed. They’re still avoiding public contact with the political right, both Christians and Jews. They’re still looking over their shoulder, afraid of what other liberals and lefties will think of them if they’re seen with the wrong people. Meanwhile, the American political left is exploding with anti-Semitism. And anti-Jewish views are making impressive gains on the right too. How long until liberal Jews “wake up”? The first law of politics is that you look for allies among people whose interests may align with yours. Herzl did that. So did Ben-Gurion. But they weren’t liberal Jews. They weren’t looking to appear virtuous by only being being seen with liberals and leftists. What are the chances that Herzl or Ben-Gurion would have publicly criticized President Trump for looking to resettle Arab refugees from Gaza in other Muslim countries? Zero. Here’s the truth: The *only* way to “fight anti-Semitism” is by making friends and building political alliances in the service of Jewish interests wherever there’s a shot at making it work. Anything else isn’t politics. It isn’t leadership either. It’s just self-flattery and social climbing. Times have changed. The time for pretending has passed. Genuine leadership is needed now, and real strength of character. If liberal Jews have got any of that on hand, now would be a good time to show it.
