To everything, there is a season.
For 28+ years, I've been lucky to earn a living by writing news, mostly about CA politics & government in Sacramento.
The ride will end this month, as I'll be signing off from The Times & from a profession that's defined so much of my life.. 🧵
Breaking news: Long awaited audit of California's troubled DMV "motor voter" program is out. Almost 84K duplicate voter registrations found, plus confusion over who really oversaw the program. First take >>

plan unveiled today puts policy in one bill, tax increase in another. Regardless, a big political fight could be brewing.
If all of you could see the slack chat of our LA Times team rushing to rework A1 and get this on tomorrow’s front page. It’s a classic journalism moment.
We, like some other outlets, are currently citing this as a violent mob. I think there’s wide agreement to make sure our language aligns with what would be used to describe similar violent efforts in other countries.
100% false and such a dangerous assertion to make. There’s plenty to discuss about how best to do signature verification and what resources local elections officials have to do it, but this is simply untrue. Of course it was required for distance voting. Good grief.
A Newport Beach man knew it was a mistake that he had been registered to vote: he’s a Canadian. His call to The Times prompted a new disclosure from DMV: 1,500 more mistaken voter registrations.
The in-person voting site in Lancaster (hardly the "most Democrat[ic] area" in CA) for
#CA25
special elex was requested by city's GOP mayor, per elections officials..a mayor who welcomed POTUS to CA this year. All-mail elections often have some in-person for those who need it.
So in California, the Democrats, who fought like crazy to get all mail in only ballots, and succeeded, have just opened a voting booth in the most Democrat area in the State. They are trying to steal another election. It’s all rigged out there. These votes must not count. SCAM!

Really wonder if Trump truly, wrongly believes all CA fires are “forest” fires that burn for a reason he latched onto in 2018. Never mind topography,
utility lines,
land development. Regardless, no president has ever politicized disaster aid for his fellow Americans like this.
..Every year, as the fire’s rage & California burns, it is the same thing-and then he comes to the Federal Government for $$$ help. No more. Get your act together Governor. You don’t see close to the level of burn in other states...But our teams are working well together in.....
In an online event tonight, organizers of the effort to force a recall election against
@GavinNewsom
say they've got 2,117,730 signatures as the deadline arrives for petition circulation. At that number, they'd need almost 71% of signatures to be validated... which seems likely.
Trump just said “anyone that’s walking or breathing” will get a ballot in California under Newsom’s executive order for November election. That’s 100% false. No matter what your political viewpoint, there’s no justification for any president saying that.
Big Sunday night surprise: Dr. Sonia Angell, director of California’s Dept. Of Public Health, has resigned. No word on why, though it comes days after controversy over state COVID-19 tracking system errors.
Context: More Californians have voted in the CA recall as of the start of the weekend than total registered voters in at least 45 states.
Recall election tally now approaching about 7.8 million ballots that have been collected by elections officials.

The decision by LAUSD to stay in distance learning mode is a big one. But in this story is a key item: LAUSD's superintendent wants *state guidance* on when and how to re-open. This seems to be key: will Newsom offer a statewide metric for opening schools?
This is horrible and also avoidable. Gavin’s District Attorneys across California are releasing dangerous criminals back on to our streets. Enough is enough.

Not quite. California allows registration all the way up to, and including, election day. Today’s deadline is the last chance to get a ballot mailed to you. After today, in-person registration and voting is the way to go. 🗳 ✌️

Part of Newsom's early anti-recall talking points is to point out there have been 6 recall efforts launched against him in his 25 mos. in office.

We've been through a lot in recent times. But boy, an incumbent president declaring victory in states with uncounted votes and insisting someone is trying to stop the election and then insisting that HE will stop the election. My head is really spinning.
A legendary predecessor of mine as Sacramento bureau chief, Virginia Ellis was a trailblazing, watchdog of California government. Colleagues and her family remember her as one of a kind.

No disrespect to CNN, but this sentence on a story about voting..
“"Pre-election voting has now surpassed two-thirds of all ballots cast during the 2016...”
This IS the election. The election began early this month and ends on Tuesday. We’ve got to shake off this 1-day concept.
The leader of the Republican caucus in the California state Senate tweeted, then deleted, this allegation about the violent mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol. I’ve asked for some evidence to support her claim.

Breaking: Newsom, lawmakers say California Constitution should explicitly protect abortion rights. They’re pitching a constitutional amendment on the November ballot.
The odds aren't good for Kevin de León to beat Dianne Feinstein tonight, but it's important to note that a guy with very little campaign $ and no statewide name recognition is only ~ 7 pts behind a 26-year incumbent. We'll see how it turns out, but it's hardly a DiFi mandate.
LA County’s plans for public schools could influence other educators across CA. But when we actually see the full plan, one huge Q: if classes are limited to 16 kids, how many days do students learn from home? With what tools? And how will it be paid for?
More to say soon. But for now: I became a journalist 29 yrs ago this summer b/c I believed in public service. That’s more true now than ever. News reporting is the hardest of all journalism endeavors AND the most important. Please support those who keep marching forward.

I moderated an elections panel in 2017 with Joe Gloria as a panelist. He is a thoughtful and dedicated elections administration official. Watching him talk about his safety in doing his job... a chilling moment in American democracy.

will announce *all* color-coded COVID-19 tiers in California will be eliminated on June 15 if current public health trends continue.
Admin says keys to this happening are "sufficient" vaccine supply for age 16+ and "stable and low" hospitalization rates.
An economic slowdown and a public health crisis — combined, they could easily wipe out California’s $21-billion budget surplus. My story from today is likely the first of many on the fiscal challenges ahead for the state budget.
And one final question for now (maybe more after the coffee kicks in): what has the state learned from this almost eight week policy of linking local activities like outdoor dining and hair salons to ICU bed availability? Is there any way to measure impact/effectiveness?
