Our new documentary capturing a family's journey through the Darien Gap has just been released. It's been more than a year of hard work to bring this story to life.
Thanks to the Flores Calderon family for letting us come with them.
We sat down for an interview with
@BArevalodeLeon
, the candidate which, together with his party SEMILLA, Guatemala's attorney general's office is trying to suspend from the Guatemalan elections.
@palabrasdeabajo
and Ampa Rodriguez produced this, Ricardo Lopez filmed and edited.
Claudia Sheinbaum has filled Mexico City's main plaza - the zocalo - without too much effort, and there's still an hour and a half to go till she's scheduled to arrive and officially kick off her presidential campaign.
President Lopez Obrador this morning:
"There’s peace and calm in all Mexico."
Reporter: "Including in Aguililla?"
AMLO: "Everywhere there is peace and calm."
We went to Aguililla for our documentary & found something very different. 👇
As the Mexican delegation sits down to talk migration with the US Administration in DC - on the Southern Mexico border a ‘caravan’ of (AP says) around 1000 people is intercepted by Mex officials.
Perhaps the biggest signal they could give of compliance with Pres. Trump’s wishes.
Today Mexico City is announcing its plan to re-open in the future, but many parts of the capital never shut down in the first place.

Xochitl Galvez has been a real shot in the arm for Mexico's opposition, now, after a muddled process, she's just been chosen as the candidate for a coalition of parties. Who is she? We take a squizz:
Cinthya Chavez edited this, Mireya Lopez produced:
Mexico is now in phase 3 of the

Seeing lots of tweets about Mexico’s National Guard today throwing stones & beating on people in the caravan.
What we saw was quite a restrained use of force by the GN who seemed under orders to block, but not hit people. Some teargas, but not the amount I’ve seen elswhere.
AMLO's economic plan is to pay for programs, grants etc by cutting out corruption. But his only strategy for doing that appears to be leading by example. Does he really believe that under his presidency Mexico's politicians will be shamed into going straight?

You don't know what you have till it's gone. No country I have been to has a broadcasting service anywhere close to the BBC. If Britain loses it, it will be an act of absolute self sabotage.

What a breathtaking generalization towards our many Mexican colleagues who face great danger to document the issues in this country.
This video is from before the explosion. Soldiers looking on as villagers fill up on gasoline from the illegally tapped pipeline. National media are saying the community had suffered shortages.

When Enrique Peña Nieto married soap opera star Angelica Rivera it gave him some great publicity in his push for the presidency. Now, 2 months after his term ended, they're divorcing. There were many who claimed it was all just a PR stunt. Harder to deny now.

A cartel middleman I interviewed in

Added to that was the threat that if he did come after them, they would respond with everything they had
Haitians trying to cross the river from Mexico to the US. But Mexican authorities have opened a dam upstream (as they do regularly) and the water is dangerously deep.

Aguililla has become ground zero in the fight between the cartels in Michoacan; a town under siege & abandoned by authorities.
It's all but cut off from the rest of the state, but we managed to get there this week to file this exclusive report:
The US is investigating Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, prosecutors have revealed for the first time.
He's already been accused of involvement in the drugs trade during a case the US is bringing against a trafficker.
A small & very brave group of parents of the disappeared have been camping outside the state gov. building in Ciudad Victoria for 3 days demanding justice for their children.
Local media aren't covering them. Pls any journos I know interested, let me know & will put you in touch
AMLO says that he endorsed the decision to release the son of 'El Chapo' for the good of the civilian population. We don't want war, he says.
It's one of those presidency defining moments: whatever happened behind the scenes, the government gave in to a criminal group.
the scene at an improvised river crossing between Mexico and the US. the people in the makeshift camp stateside have rigged up a rope to get across to buy food in Mexico and back again.
The mexican foreign ministry has just said that Evo Morales’s plane is now 7 hours from Mexico on a ‘technical stop’.
Flight tracker shows it as in Paraguay.
That’s in the opposite direction to his intended destination - Mexico.
This is getting more complicated.

It was Ovidio’s brief capture last year that led to a fullscale battle in Culiacan - and humiliation for federal forces.
Mexico is ready to offer political asylum to Julian Assange if necessary, says AMLO. "Assange is a journalist and deserves a chance, I am in favor of pardoning him," he said in his morning presser.

At least thirteen journalists have been killed this year in Mexico, making it one of the most lethal countries for press worldwide.

AMLO now: The army & navy are pillars of the Mexican state — so strong that the detention of one (ex) defense minister on narco-trafficking charges, doesn't make them weaker.
Plenty might disagree with that. Cienfuegos was the top armed forces official for 6 yrs.

Mexico's foreign minister
@m_ebrard
has confirmed that 6000 of its new National Guard will head to its Southern border with Guatemala as part of its efforts to stem migration and avoid US tariffs.
This is quite a militarized force, made up of soldiers, marines & federal police.
Not every Mexican journalist is clean, or every publication credible — the industry here has serious problems. I can understand the frustration with that.
But to write the whole profession off, including those who've died trying to report the truth, seems deeply disrespectful.
Just spoke to the mayor of

prosecutors will bring charges related to the

corruption scandal, says Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero.
About a dozen other Latin American countries have pursued their own officials related to the scandal, but Mexico has always resisted.
Under a new plan, US authorities are now flying Central American migrants deep into South Mexico to prevent them trying to cross into the states again. From there, Mexico is dropping them at the Guatemalan border.
we went there to talk to them:
Not a comment on the caravan, or the government policy of stopping it, but a note on this from an eyewitness perspective. Any journos who saw differently, am listening.

¿Cómo el Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación pasó de ser un brazo armado del Cártel de Sinaloa a convertirse en una organización con presencia en 23 estados de México y varios países del mundo?
luis villagran, one of the caravan organizers, has just said they're making a deal with the mexican government that everyone in the caravan will be given visas.but those visas will be processed in 6 different states:
we've confirmed this deal with mexican migration authorities.
Mexico is telling the US it will curb the flow of migration.
But we've found a secret route: people smugglers taking 'caravans' of trucks packed with people across a little guarded point in Mexico's Southern border. Here's the story:
the caravan's just had a meeting in which they decided not to take up the government's offer of visas for all to work in mexico in return for the break up the caravan & taking them to 6 different states.
distrust in authorities & desire to keep moving seem drivers of the choice
