There is NO travel ball tournament, showcase or practice that is more important/valuable to your recruiting than attending a camp on campus at a school you are interested in.

Had a recruit tell me she was sorry, she really wanted to play for me but was going somewhere else because there wasn’t much to do in Palatka. I said please don’t apologize, if softball isn’t more important to you than that, then you’re making the right decision.

Why are camps deemed “money pits” by those who spend $10k a summer traveling the country for a tournament/showcase every weekend? Be realistic and attend the right camps and it’s probably the single best investment you can make in your recruiting process.

When I offer a recruit they always ask when they need to give me an answer. I tell them when they are 100% they want to come here. I don’t want you to commit because of a deadline. With that said, and as time passes, we have to keep recruiting.

Recruiting the last several weekends and saw a lot of recently committed players who don't look to be playing with the same energy and focus they had prior to committing. We don't recruit you because of the player you are, we recruit you because of the player we think you can be.

I don’t think parents/players understand the value of attending camps at schools they are interested in. Here’s why you go: 1. Shows me you are interested 2. I get to spend a few hours working with you and getting to know you 3. I’ve made at least 1 offer at every camp I’ve had

Hypothetical scenario to find out who’s honest: The #1 D1 softball program in the country offers you 25% but doesn’t have your exact major. A very good D3 softball program offers you 100% academic scholarship and are the #1 school in the country for your major. Where do you go?

Prospects - Go to games this season: JUCO, NAIA, D2, D1...in that order. Each game, look at the players. Ask yourself, am I similar to their: size, speed, arm strength, defense, offense...Be honest. If yes, go to the next game. If no, find schools at that level to target.

The other day I was asked how I evaluate hitters. Here’s the simple answer. How is the player going to get to second base? Enough power to hit doubles or enough speed to steal a base. You have to be able to get to second base on your own. Hard to score from first.

I would argue this Sept 1 is more important for the 2023s whether you are committed or not. Are you better than last year this date? How much more prepared are you to compete at the college level. If you’re the same player you were a year ago, you’ve actually gotten worse.

College coaches go to tournaments with a list of players to watch. If you’re not on that list, we aren’t there to see you. If you catch our eye as we watch players on list, we jot your name down and do our research. We watch players not teams. We have to know you to recruit you.

I may get some backlash for this but…if you LOVE softball, it’s ok to pick a college based on softball. You have 4 yrs left to play. You can start your education at any college. The real world is not going to leave you behind. Enjoy softball and finish your degree when it’s over

Recruiting advice from tonight’s camp: Don’t ask coaches what type of player they are looking for. Tell us the type of player you are, ask how you fit and how we can help you. You may not be a fit for me, but coaches talk and most are happy to help you find other options.

There is a big misconception about JUCO (Florida) academics. Students are taking the same/similar classes first 2 yrs they would take at 4 yr. Transferring with an AA is never a bad thing. Bring credits in, get AA early, start a Bachelors Program. Academic fit for most athletes!

Got the “What are you looking for in a player” question today. Looking for a UNICORN! The biggest, fastest, most consistent hitter that hits the farthest, hardest thrower, best defense, all in one player. But recruit players that have at least one of those skills and develop em

While we’re talking emails… Only email coaches that you are interested in playing for and are willing to respond to. Don’t email every coach just because you see they are at an event. Nothing worse than replying to an email from a player and not getting a response.

Lots of hype around a date, Sept 1, that affects such a small % of schools/recruits per sport. It’s not the beginning or the end, it’s just another day in the recruiting process. You think you’ve worked hard for this date, how hard you gonna work after it?

Someone said bunt, A bunt is not a swing. If you are bunting in 10U, you’re not doing it to make player better, you do it because you don’t have confidence in your hitter, or more so, kids that age make a lot of errors. You say bunting is a lost art…I say bunting is a lost out

Culture Change 2 years ago we had a Larry’s Giant Subs wrapper in our dugout for over 2 weeks. I would kick it around as I addressed the team. They would all look at it but never picked it up. Yesterday, a water cup blew out of the dugout and someone picked it up immediately.
