I interviewed
@ChicagosMayor
for
@SouthSideWeekly
last week. Johnson highlighted diversity in his administration and progressive legislation; bristled at a question about CTU contract talks; and demurred when asked to pick a favorite House music genre.
SCOOP: Two Chicago men who appeared in a "Fox and Friends" segment at a Naperville diner told me they were invited under false pretenses by
@GiannoCaldwell
. One of the men, a 4-time aldermanic candidate, was paid over $10K by Paul Vallas's campaign.
Whenever it’s feasible, journalists should seek consent before filming or photographing protesters (and blur faces when consent hasn’t been obtained), particularly when participation in protests makes them subject to significant administrative and state repression.
Is relief for renters on the way? The push to end a statewide ban on rent control means that Chicago, for the first time, could limit rent hikes.
We've got takes from both landlords and renters 👇
The same columnist who described shooter Kyle Rittenhouse as "terrified," wrote that Adam Toledo, whom CPD chased and killed, as "maybe even more dangerous" than an adult.
This is called racism
When Paul Vallas headed the New Orleans school district, he contracted a recruiting agency run by a convicted felon to hire teachers from the Philippines; the agency held immigrants in isolation and illegally charged them thousands of dollars in fees
I spoke to a dozen educators in cities where Paul Vallas has run schools and found a trail of privatization followed by lawsuits, labor violations and arrests of Black and Latiné kids. My latest for

NEW: Emails show that last summer Lori Lightfoot directed her staff to gather data to support keeping qualified immunity. The report they prepared shows CPD civil rights lawsuits have cost taxpayers over $500 million since 2009. For
@SouthSideWeekly
Seems like a good day to revisit the fact that Lori had Streets & San blow more than half its overtime budget for the year on parking snow plows all over Chicago in anticipation of protests that never materialized
Although the segment was staged to appear as though Caldwell was interviewin Chicago voters who were skeptical of Johnson, Glass told me he is supportive of Johnson's preventative approach to addressing violence at its root causes.
Levondale Glass and Andre Smith both told me they were surprised Caldwell asked them about Mayor Johnson, because they were told the interview would be about violence. Glass said he was "upset" Caldwell asked him about the mayor under the pretense of talking about his dead son.
“Don’t take me up to be like I’m against Brandon Johnson,” Glass told me. “He’s a Black man; I hope he does well. Make sure you put that in” this story. “We’re gonna wait and give him a chance.”

Remember how the City parked snowplows parked all over Chicago in April ahead of feared protests? It cost millions. I dug into the data for

Breakfast with ‘Friends’: Gianno Caldwell talks new Chicago mayor with diners
Gianno Caldwell asks diners their reaction to Brandon Johnson being sworn in as Chicago Mayor. Segment:
Imagine if the Trib applied the same analysis to the police union, which successfully seized control of three of the oversight bodies created to hold the union's members accountable and also endorsed Vallas (a fact the Trib editorial board conveniently elides)
From the Editorial Board:
While we congratulate Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas on making it to the runoff, we do remind them of the long history of fealty to sponsoring organizations, leading to corruption and moral compromise.
This is the shelter where a five-year-old child died yesterday after falling ill. Volunteers say that shelter staff refused to provide medication or call an ambulance
As dawn breaks, activists holding a 24-hour vigil outside the Federal Bldg have just read the 10,000th name on a list of Palestinian victims of the war on Gaza. So, so many victims are children.
As a Twitter Blue subscriber, Vallas has full access to mobile 2-factor authentication, which would seem to make "hacking" his account incredibly difficult
Latest poll has Johnson & Vallas tied—and belies claims that the election isn't about race: 72% of white voters for Vallas, and 74% of Black voters support Johnson. Latiné voters are split. Johnson strongest on the West Side.
Stating the obvious, but this'll come down to GOTV
NEW: Hacked documents revealed that a dozen Chicago cops and firefighters donated to the Canadian trucker convoy that blockaded border crossings. One firefighter apparently used a city email address to do so. CFD says they will investigate.
John Catanzara and Eddie Johnson are not reputable sources. We just elected 66 new Police District Council members and a mayor who wants CPD reform, yet corporate media keeps trotting out the same problematic people and the same tired narratives
Lori Lightfoot

condemns people who bring weapons to peaceful protests, and “applauds” police who...brought weapons to a peaceful protest.

"We can't allow our children to be radicalized," the mayor continues, citing a poll showing many young Americans aren't proud to be Americans.
After Vallas left Bridgeport CT, the next superintendent introduced a program that addressed students’ social and emotional needs, and suspensions and in-school arrests dropped, while test scores rose.
Parents and teachers in cities where Paul Vallas ran schools described his zero-tolerance approach to kids who had suffered trauma.
"He was very much a no-excuses guy," said one.

Lightfoot and COPA publicly putting the decision whether to release video on a grieving family moments after they viewed it is an abdication of responsibility and a bald attempt to avoid public outcry & pass the buck for that decision onto the family.
Today's Kafka award goes to the city worker who emailed "call my office" but had the wrong phone number in their email sig, and when I figured out the right number and called and told them the number was wrong, said "yeah, people tell me that all the time."
The facts and the circumstances around this case are under investigation, but we must ask ourselves how our social safety net failed this boy leading up to the tragic events in the early hours of Monday morning.
Tonight, Chicago-area journalists will come together to honor our fallen colleagues and express solidarity with journalists in Gaza.
Silence is not an option.
In 2000, the Chicago Tribune's editorial board criticized Vallas for awarding, and subsequently extending, a no-bid contract worth $6.1 million to a company with ties to his father-in-law, Palos Heights mayor Dean Koldenhoven. (The Trib has since endorsed Vallas for mayor)
Last year CPD used the city's gun-violence prevention hub to monitor nonviolent block parties, bike rides, demonstrations, press conferences—and even anti-gun-violence vigils. My latest investigation for
@SouthSideWeekly
Chicago police just denied a FOIA as "unduly burdensome" based on the mere possibility the records I requested could be thousands of pages.
I have gotten complete complaint records on multiple cops before. Seems like a new tactic to dodge FOIA compliance.
Lightfoot says CPD "learned a lot" from May 29 weekend, and "put what they learned into practice." CPD knocked out Miracle Boyd's teeth in July, attacked and kettled nonviolent protesters in August, and attacked a small nonviolent protest at the Mexican consulate in September.
In 2017, a CPD officer held a gun to a man's head and pistol-whipped him until he was apparently unconscious. COPA recommended that officer and two others be fired as a result of the incident in March 2021.
They still haven't been.
NEW for

: To estimate how much the City spent on the NASCAR street race, I FOIA'ed Dept of Transportation spending and CPD overtime. The total was about $3.25 million. NASCAR isn't on the hook for any of that.
Endorse a white neoliberal who's in bed with the FOP one day, celebrate a Black anarcho-communist who CPD called "more dangerous than a thousand rioters" the next 🙃

Lucy Eldine Gonzalez Parsons was a labor reformer & women’s rights activist. In 1878, she helped organize the Working Women’s Union No. 1 which was the only trade union in Chicago with female members at the time. In 1905, she helped found the Industrial Workers of the World.

Mayor Johnson's Transition Committee Report reiterates recommendations to end the City's contract with ShotSpotter, eliminate CPD's gang database, and close the Homan Square interrogation site.
When Chinese officials isolated the city of Wuhan in the first lockdown, they created high-tech controls to track its society to stop the spread of Covid. Now, the same tools are being used to monitor other risks, like crime and "hostile" political forces.
Every time I've investigated an officer who was involved in a high-profile abuse incident, they had a long history of complaints that was far more than the average officer's. Every single time.
Chicago taxpayers paid $91.3M to resolve lawsuits that named 116 Chicago police officers whose alleged misconduct led more than once to payouts between 2019 and 2021.
Ultimately I see Arwady’s firing not so much as “retribution” from CTU and more as a repudiation of the neoliberal approach to public health. Arwady more or less capably administered that approach, but elections have consequences, and a shift away from that is one.
$100 million / 340,658 kids = $294 per student

In 2009, Vallas publicly flirted for months with running for County Commissioner as a Republican, and had the backing of the GOP before he dropped the exploratory bid--which calls into question the whole "lifelong Democrat" thing
Statements from COPA and CPD both appear to indicate officers who fatally shot a man over the weekend initiated a foot pursuit because he fled, which is prohibited by the department's foot-pursuit policy.

Paul Vallas’ entire premise is flatly contradicted by the WTTW article he cited. He’s quickly gone from mayoral candidate to reply-guy-who-didn’t-read-the-article
One way to
#DefundThePolice
is don't fill police vacancies, strategy supported by many in Mayor Johnson's camp. Denying communities the officers needed to deter crime means record overtime costs as $210 mil was spent last year & already $126 mil this year

The 2024 Democratic Natl Convention will be in Chicago, a city that just elected a progressive trade unionist mayor who beat a police union-endorsed law & order “centrist” who ran anti-defund attack ads against him
Progressivism destroyed itself over the last 3 years and there's been a huge swing back towards the normie libs within the Democratic coalition because the left went so crazy and caused a homicide crisis. Commies are nostalgic about 2020 because they know their one chance is gone

In 1973, organizers in the Black power and civil rights movements gathered for the first-ever conference on community control of police. 50 years later, Chicagoans will elect civilians to police district councils. Read about the history of the struggle:
Lightfoot has:
•Failed to implement 70% of consent decree
•Overseen 2+ police riots during 2020 protests
•Spurned GAPA
•Spent millions in COVID relief on CPD
•Tried to suppress Young video
•Lied about Toledo having a gun in his hand
•Offered to reform foot chases, maybe
Arwady: I would ask school nurses to be willing to be part of testing, case investigation, contact tracing in CPS. we can commit to getting more testing resources there. We’ve already got that well underway. We got PCR results from that first day of school coming back in 24 hours
Officers Callahan and Schmitz are in the 83rd and 93rd percentiles for complaints, respectively, and in the 98th and 83rd for use-of-force reports, according to

This was earlier in the day when police and protesters were pushing back and forth on a barricade police put up.
This was going on most of the day, though from what I saw, officers Callahan and Schmitz seemed to get the most aggressive with protesters on the line.
