Everything I've heard/know about Ludwig points towards someone that is incredibly kind and genuine. For those who love music for games (and gaming in general), please keep in mind we all have our own path. All I see here is a heartfelt thank you to his parents, nothing more.
Last night, 39-year-old composer Ludwig Göransson won his second Academy Award for his score to ‘Oppenheimer’. In a heartfelt speech, he thanked his parents for giving him his foundation in music.

New game score starting today. A few ground rules: Outboard hardware/instruments only. No VSTs. No fx plug-ins. Live takes only - no quantizing or editing. Basically computer = tape machine. Plenty of synths, guitars pedals, hardware fx and physical instruments!

Aaaaand it's finally time for a break!
50 solid weeks of 7am-6:30pm M-F, totaling 8+ hours of finished music. 4 week-long trips - made new friends, reunited w/old ones.
I love my job! But I will also love my well-deserved time off until Jan.

Backing up work from my early sampling days. This is total samples from Dead Space 1 and 2 combined. And yes, both scores were built entirely from MIDI and bespoke samples.
Around 32,000 samples for DS1 and an additional 55,000 for DS2.

Thinking about recording my own sus cym and gong samples, especially w/lower dyn and longer tails but loud as well. Is that something anyone else would be interested in using, or am I just being a picky percussionist?

Wrapped up final cue for incredibly fun score. 200+ tracks with so many talented soloists. Nyckleharpa & world flutes won the "most fx used" award but totally nailed the vibe. Definitely a record for me but worth it! (thanks new PC)

Am I the only one that uses, like, *maybe* two mic positions in orch sample libs for stereo? Missing the point of 10-20+ mics. Is that a selling point for composers? Do folks really blend that many for different cues AND have them in a template AND do new mixes for every gig?

These, ladies and gentleman, are called CD's. In the stone age we used to rip isolated scores off DVD's and make our own custom artwork for complete scores. These are mine (aside from the 5 commercial, signed CD's top left).

Sadly, it has come time to take down my too-big-for-the-studio drumset. It's been 2 years of almost daily practice/fun but deadlines and other instrument needs supplant it!

100% disagree that there is some magical binary devide between music for film and games. The music I wrote for the film Prey would be just at home in an (appropriate) game. The music I wrote for the game Modern Warfare II could easily fit under a film.
Final Fantasy music legend Nobuo Uematsu says he thinks "movie soundtrack-like music in games" is uninteresting, and that "game music cannot develop further" if composers don't try something different.

Some of your keyboard power supplies prob buzz around 50khz, so don't spend 2+ hours trying to track down something amiss in your robust, perfectly clean, balanced audio/power chain.

tip, especially for newcomers: try not to overwelm yourself & just focus on making friends. A one on one coffee/meal with a fellow artist is just as important as all those "meetings" you will hear folks talking about. In fact, that's my preferred way to "network." :)

Hmmm...for me, it's ALL about theory. Tomb Raider, Moss, Dead Space: theory is how I choose modes/chords/scales to framework each cue.
From F to what chord? Depends on the mood I want. It's a language unto itself:
F - Bbmi = romantic. F - B = spacey. Fmi - Bbmaj = heroic.

You can’t actually write music theoretically. It’s simply not possible; intuition is necessary. Say you have an F chord. Where to next? C? G? AbmM7? No chord at all? Theory has names and contexts for all of these but it can’t tell you where to go.

Food for thought - orchestration books. The Piston and Adler are definitely my most used and oldest (since the 90's) as well as the Grantham, which may have been a college book if memory serves.
All of Peter Alexander's pdf/courses are also amazing!

No GDC 1st 2 years working full time in games. $$$! Then many years of sharing tiny hotel rooms with 3-5 other people and the cheapest flights I could book 6 months in advance. Ramen in the room or fast food. But worth it! Mostly for life-long friends I've made. 21 years now :)

To counter my previous mega fx pic, here's my in-progres new orch template. 200-ish local instrument-per-track. 3 send verbs (short, med, long) for tails. 2 insert verbs (choir/orch master) for distance. Gentle dynamic eq on final busses.

Literally the first thing I wrote for DS2. Wanted a main theme that spelled DEAD (but in a creepy harmonic way, hence the b9 Db and
