Until this year, only 5 men had ever broken 1:42 for 800m. In 2024 alone, 5 more men have joined the sub-1:42 club. What the heck is going on??? My story on why everyone is running so fast this year and why the world record might only be the beginning:

37 hours after earning a bronze medal in the 10,000 meters (and six days after bronze in the 5,000), the Netherlands' Sifan Hassan wins the 2024 Olympic marathon over a field of legends in an Olympic record of 2:22:55. One of the all-time great Olympic distance running feats.

Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray, who has finished 47 consecutive Boston Marathons (he runs the course at night once his directing duties are over), ran 26.2 miles this morning on a 3.8-mile loop around his neighborhood in North Andover. 📷 @DMSE

Jakob Ingebrigtsen has just taken a blowtorch to the longest-standing distance world record on the books. He runs 7:17.55 in Chorzow, Poland, to take more than 3 seconds off of Daniel Komen's legendary 7:20.67 WR for 3000m. What. A. Run.

You can make a case that if you split Eliud Kipchoge's career in two, they would be the best and second-best marathoners in history

What Wightman just did is basically every miler’s fantasy. Pull up on the Olympic champ’s shoulder with 200 to go and take your shot. What a move, what a win.

There has never been an elite mile race like what we just saw in Monaco. Faith Kipyegon whacks almost five seconds off Sifan Hassan's 4:12.33 world record. 4:07.64. By a woman. National records for 🇰🇪🇮🇪🇬🇧🇦🇺🇺🇸🇫🇷🇻🇪 All 13 finishers ran personal bests.

Grant Fisher says he expects his family has already begun to party in Paris after his bronze medal. Will he join them? "I haven’t really thought about whether I’m going to party or not. I do need to recover [for the 5k]. But it’s not every day you medal at the Olympics."

This wasn’t just the hardest US Olympic team to make. It was the hardest podium to make in the history of the world. First 110m hurdle race in history with three men under 13.00.

Kelvin Kiptum's marathon career only lasted 10 months. Yet he still produced three of the fastest times ever run: 2:01:53, 2:01:25, and 2:00:35. It's a loss for running world that we did not get to see his full career -- or get to know him better.

This was more stunning than Kipchoge's world record. Tigist Assefa, a 2016 Olympian in the 800m, runs 2:15:37 to win the 2022 Berlin Marathon. This was just her second marathon, after running 2:34 in Riyadh in March. She's now #3 all-time behind Brigid Kosgei & Paula Radcliffe.

Before today, only one American woman had broken 3:56.00 for 1500m. If you ran that fast today, you did not make the Olympic team.

We need to appreciate what we're seeing this year in the sprints. Elaine Thompson-Herah & Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce are having two of the greatest seasons ever by a 100m runner. At the same time.

50.68!!! Sydney McLaughlin takes .73 of a second (!!!) off her own world record to win the 2022 world title in the 400m hurdles. Quite simply one of the greatest performances in the history of track & field.

Meet organizers offered a $10,000 prize to the best performance at today's Silesia Diamond League, based on World Athletics scoring tables. Incredibly, Ingebrigtsen running 7:17 for 3000m was not enough to get it. Mondo's 6.26m PV WR is worth 1339 points to 1320 for Jakob's 3k.

American Quincy Hall was only 4th off the turn, but launches an ALL-TIME kick to win one of the greatest 400m races you'll ever see. Hall runs 43.40, #4 all-time. GB's Matthew Hudson-Smith runs the fastest non-winning time ever -- 43.44 for silver. What an Olympic final.

There will be a lot of talk about pacing formations and shoes, but no matter how it was achieved, what Eliud Kipchoge did today in Vienna was insanely impressive. His legs still ran 26.2 miles in 1:59:40. That's bonkers.
