Every known material is described by a Hamiltonian, that in most instances we can not solve. On the other hand there are Hamiltonians that we can solve exactly and have outstanding properties, but the materials that realize them remain to be discovered... or fabricated.

@alejandroferron @equiux We are importing ideas of quantum control, a field where @alejandroferron is an expert to the arena of electron-spin resonance with scanning tunneling microscopy (ESR-STM) and we are showing how to manipulate, electrically, the quantum state of an individual atomic spin.

Our theory work is inspired by existing experiments (. We determine how shot-noise and back-action limit the accuracy of the method. We also propose ESR-STM to measure thermal gradients.

Last Feb 2 we published in @NanoLetters our paper on the theory of how to measure temperature of a single atom using ESR-STM, together with @yelkodch PhD student in my group @INLnano , funded by Quantum Portugal Initiative.
