UGA Psychology prof, PI: UGA Infant Lab. She/her. I support the right of students to protest without being met with violence or suspension. Find me on BlueSky
The UGA faculty statement calling for an immediate end to the suspension of UGA students arrested as part of the April 29 pro-Palestinian campus protest is now up to 238 signatures. It's been one week. The continued suspensions are ridiculous.
UGA Faculty call for immediate un-suspension of the students arrested in Monday's protest. Petition currently has 183 signatures from across campus. This has been shared with

administrators and the Office of Student Conduct.
@redandblack
Y’all. This is the notice of suspension that one of the UGA students received. I have redacted their name. But take a note of the timestamp. Email sent at 5:09 PM, they have to contact her office by 5:10 PM, or else they are suspended at 5:11 PM. You can’t make this up. 🤦🏼♀️
@mjs_DC
Request to all journalists -- any bill that has to do with "from the moment of fertilization" is not a FETAL personhood bill, it's a ZYGOTE personhood bill. A zygote is a fertilized egg. Call these trash bills what they are. Don't adopt their scientifically incorrect lingo.
Sending an email to my Spring UGA classes telling them that I will not penalize them for attendance on Monday or Tuesday Jan 10 or 11. That won't work for every class at UGA, I understand, but it does for my spring classes. Some college experiences are more important than class.
I am very tempted to snitch tweet a particular UGA department, widely known as a “weed out” course for premed majors. I cannot count the hours I have spent listening to frustrated/angry students describe the disconnect between course instruction and exams.

Some of the best advice we got in premarital counseling was when the person said, “you don’t need children to make a family. The two of you are a full and complete family right now.” I wish you all the best, a full life free of unsolicited questions too! ❤️
@mos_daf
This is absolutely enraging and infuriating. The white faculty on your campus should Picket and protest at the police department until you have a public apology from all of the officers involved as well as their supervisors. I am nauseated to read this.
@AlanBaxter
Female human newborns are born with all their eggs in their ovaries. Therefore, the egg that became you was once inside your maternal grandmother’s body, when your mom was a fetus.
My academic hot take, for all faculty who teach undergrads: not only is it important NOT to support grade-grubbing, we need to tell them not to do it, and explain why. And then follow through on what we tell them! A short thread:
So... a friend’s mom died of COVID today. She was fully vaccinated in March, hospitalized in late April. I know it’s just an anecdote of 1, but... sobering nevertheless.
@DCampoamor
Correct. Anything referring to < 8 weeks is an embryo. And any bill arguing for legal personhood from the moment of conception is a “zygote personhood” bill. Call it what it is, not using the unscientific propaganda terms handed to you.
Remember that time that thousands of UGA undergrads came downtown to celebrate the natty, and police showed up with tear gas and riot gear because they were blocking streets? Wait, let me check my notes... (a necessary thread that will probably lose me a few followers)
@msblackteach
This is the “big secret“ of the racial wealth gap. The good news for first time homebuyers is that it’s more like a 5% down payment. And you’ll find lenders who will work with you and your budget. But yes often there is some wealth or inheritance passed down, if you’re white.
@byKateSmith
Media and other medical folks: we need to quit using the word “pregnancy“ to describe an ectopic fertilization. A fertilized egg outside of the uterus is not a viable pregnancy. Full stop. It’s a life threatening emergency to the pregnant person, every time.
@TheSpiritualAr2
Ok now that it’s over and you’re safe, I think you have a children’s book here.

I’m really curious how you teach anything whatsoever about US history while abiding by this particular slide. GI Bill? Jim Crow? College admissions? Redlining? Noooo those had nothing whatsoever to do with race or sex. We are NEUTRAL in this class! 🫡

I also learned that my kids need to start their screenings TEN YEARS YOUNGER than I was at my diagnosis. Your friend should have received that care. Inexcusable that she didn't get the test she needed.

I am SO sorry. I was diagnosed with stage 1 colon cancer (no symptoms) from a routine colonoscopy at age 50 (3 yrs ago)... only to learn that

now recommends 45 as the new baseline for all. And I learned SO many ppl I know lost loved ones in their 40s or younger.
For my faculty colleagues: a regular reminder that our attendance policies are up to us. I HIGHLY suggest making your course materials for 2nd week of March be light, asynchronous, & maybe hold optional zoom office hours. Let’s be humane & creative. We will ALL need a respite.

Yes but It’s more than that. If you are a nursing mom, you literally have to either have the baby eat or use a breast pump about every 3 to 4 hours. Because lactation and laws of nature etc.
UGA prof here and I will go down swinging for Georgia State. Right in the heart of Atlanta, our most diverse student body of any public university in GA, and some of my favorite colleagues. 😤
I did not have Donald Trump deriding GSU on my Bingo Card but dare I say that Georgia State University is a crown jewel in the university system of Georgia and a major transformational force for socioeconomic mobility and innovation for the state of Georgia. And I’m proud of it.
I don't know who needs to hear this (actually we all know who needs to hear this!) but any instructor who says this on the 1st day of class is an asshole, is a poor teacher, and should be reprimanded if not fired. To all students harmed by this department: I'm sorry.
@jfrickuga
I’ll never forget my UGA Gen Chem professor seemingly ecstatic on the first day of class when he said over half of the students would fail or withdraw. Probably 200 or more students in each Gen Chem lecture. Not ideal to be intimidated like that as a freshman. I passed though!
@RottenInDenmark
I love how the fact that the university opened another section for students who don’t want to take a class from him is seen as “siphoning“ students away from him. Like he is entitled to their enrollment?

Well well well. Have you heard about the time in May 1990 that the
@universityofga
campus had an outbreak of a highly contagious disease, and people were BANNED FROM CAMPUS if they weren’t vaccinated?
So I have learned from a reliable source that some UGA freshmen were told this this morning that they had been exposed to someone with Covid, and *asked if they could go home for 2 weeks*. Thread: students, if you are living in campus housing, you don't HAVE TO go home.
“If you’ve broken the law, if you’re damaging property, if you are assaulting especially police officers, you should have harsh penalties,” Kemp said. “Send a message: We are not going to allow Georgia to become the next Columbia University.”

I think many higher achieving students have been taught to, or have been reinforced for, grade-grubbing in the past. One student flat-out told me "My mom always taught me to advocate for myself." I replied "advocating shouldn't involve ignoring instructions."
As I see MANY of my university colleagues celebrate turning in their final grades (and I'm happy for you, truly!) it's a good time to remind the world that the
@universityofga
has a longer academic calendar than any university I can find. I GIVE two final exams on Dec. 17!
By telling the WHOLE class that grade-grubbing won't work, and then sticking to it, everyone knows that they are on the same playing field. To me, this is flat-out an issue of academic justice and equity. /end
So I've been a professor for a long time, but recently became the parent of a college student who experienced a major unexpected medical event: two broken wrists, both of which require surgery. I've learned a few lessons more deeply: 🧵
So at a time that hospitals in Georgia are critically overcrowded and students & faculty alike are worried about exponential spread on campuses, the USG Chancellor and provosts of USG institutions met today to discuss how to discipline faculty who aren’t teaching in person.
@assignedmedia
Thanks for this helpful explanation. Even for people trying to be supportive, this is not always intuitive, especially for us slightly older folks.

Hey UGA friends, alums, faculty, etc. One of our most beloved employees just retired after working at UGA for over 30 years. Her salary after all that time (via public records) is in the low 30s. 😕 Donate *here* to help her know how much she is appreciated.

This is an outrageous outcome from our judiciary process. All criminal charges against the students have been dropped. Two of the more serious conduct charges were dropped. But yet students received a longer suspension than they would have had they pleaded guilty! 🧵
The University of Georgia’s University Judiciary, which handles UGA student conduct hearings, has found all six April 29 pro-Palestine demonstrators in violation of five Code of Conduct regulations.

Please elaborate on the exact reasons you were given. If in-person instruction is safe, I’m having a hard time understanding why this is not. What can you share to help us understand? I’m not blaming this account, just to be clear. I want to know what hurdles you encountered.
Well, I didn’t have “universities publicly shaming other universities while putting the blame of pandemic spread on the backs of teenagers” on my 2020 academic bingo card, but here we are… 🤦🏼♀️🤪🙄
@JemiSHaaaZzz
A friend of mine made the very astute observation that this black mother is doing something that most white women would not be willing to do: putting her child in harms way for the larger cause of racial justice. Putting “the greater good“ first.
Let’s be clear what happened: a committee of dedicated people worked for over a year and recommended renaming 75 buildings or colleges/departments across the USG named after overt racists and slaveholders. The Board of Regents voted down these recommendations en masse. 😒
The University System of Georgia Board of Regents announced Monday it will not pursue name changes to buildings or colleges despite recommendations from an advisory group tasked with reviewing the names. The group recommended changes to 33 UGA buildings.
Just another day in zoom intro psych with 300 of my favorite students, lecturing about development, pointing out that “gender reveal“ parties are actually “sex reveal“ or more accurately “genitalia reveal“ parties. 😂 💞💙💜
BIG NEWS:
@universityofga
and other USG schools ARE following the federal vaccine mandate. I don’t at all think it is an accident that this email was not sent until 3 o’clock today, after the news coverage of the lawsuit filed by our state attorney general. 🙄
Dear Uga faculty colleagues: a faculty letter calling for the immediate un-suspension of the suspended students from Monday’s protest is in circulation. Please send me a DM if you would like to add your name to it.
Big turn out at
@universityofga
for our
@AAUP
@UcwgaUGA
sponsored Covid Policy protest today. Great speakers making a case for why a mask and vaccine mandate will keep our campus safer for students as well as the UGA/Athens community. Will be out there all week!
#Masks4USG
Week 1 of my packed 300-person Intro Psych class. TEN students have tested positive for Covid, including at least two who told me they are vaccinated and have fully masked in every class. Reminder, faculty: yes, YOU have to go to the classroom to teach, but you CAN record.
So today (March 12) is the day that things went sideways re: Covid lockdown last year, and UGA had "we're not closing wait yes we are" whiplash. I missed it all b/c I was in surgery. But this means it's another important anniversary: I'm one year colon cancer free today! Yay!
I support celebrations, as well as political protests. I do NOT support double standards. If our community will tolerate drunk college kids stealing property and blocking roads, we sure as hell need to support peaceful political protests that do the same.
I'm teaching 336 students this fall, mostly freshman. 300 person intro psych (all on zoom), 20 person honors intro psych +16 person freshman seminar, both smaller classes hybrid in-person + zoom. Twenty-eight (28) of these students have tested positive for Covid-19. 8.3%.

Wise words to elected officials (all over the country) from UGA students in the Georgia Youth Justice Coalition. There will be a memorial gathering for Laken and Wyatt on Monday at 3pm in Tate Plaza.

Bless you, you are a hero and a saint. But why on earth aren’t these kinds of skills taught in prison for people who are near release? That should be part of any humane criminal justice reform platform. Shame on us.

I have a friend who married her college sweetheart. Her in-laws divorced, then her father died a couple years later. Fast forward, her father-in-law marries her mom. So, she’s married to her stepbrother. 🤷🏼♀️
If this is an officially sanctioned UGA Greek life event, we need some explanation. A colleague of mine called the UGA police department and they claimed not to have the person-power to respond. WHAT? 🤦🏼♀️ Do we have a policy for outdoor gatherings on campus property or not?
MASK MANDATES MATTER. I taught classes in person during the entire 2020-2021 academic year; students both semesters came to class in person. I didn't have a single issue with a student refusing to wear a mask or even grumbling about it. We all just... wore them. BUT this year:
@RottenInDenmark
It’s just bonkers that an institution that normally controls messaging so tightly has completely collapsed. My intrigue isn’t about KM per se, it’s about the royal comms apparatus just clowning this so spectacularly
@michaelharriot
There’s already an assault on students learning in science labs on campus without wearing socialist anti-freedom lab safety goggles. How dare we deny them the right to scald their eyeballs out with a splash of acid. I bet their corneas would build immunity to future acid.

*rubs forehead* Look, I get that we live in a state with a Republican gov / legislature. But if you're going to make a statement about events in DC yesterday, you CANNOT put out something milquetoast like this unless you are willing to address, and condemn, white supremacy.
UGA students staff and faculty: USG campuses around the state, including UGA, will be participating in a week-long public protest against our unsafe campus Covid policies, namely the lack of an indoor mask mandate. Every day the week of September 13. More details coming soon.
The Georgia

Suggestion: while we are applauding the moral stance taken by the professor here, let’s also cheer for all the other students who wore a mask without complaint, and for the two faculty members who are picking up an extra teaching load to make sure the students are taken care of.
The 88-year-old professor told the student that he could die from COVID-19 due to underlying health factors.
“I had risked my life to defend my country while in the Air Force. I was not willing to risk my life to teach a class with an unmasked student.”
When you have a global PR disaster on your hands, the first words of your statement the next day need to be: “We’re sorry.“
Tate was/is fine. It’s centrally located, close to parking and residence halls , and is already open regularly. I still don’t get ANY of this.
Every student and faculty member in the USG needs to read this thread. An open records request shows that a private company is putting legal pressure on the USG to keep dorms open in the fall so they won’t lose money. 😐😐😐
