BREAKING: SCOTUS will hear Johnson v Grants Pass, a case about if homeless people can be punished for using things like pillow and blankets when sleeping outside if there are no safe shelters.
This is the biggest SCOTUS case about homelessness in decades.
This morning, seven U.S.rabbis and Israeli activists were arrested by Israeli police at the Gaza border as part of a delegation of thirty rabbis and other peace activists with Rabbis for Ceasefire who were attemping to bring food supplies into Gaza through the Erez crossing.
Kentucky is working on a bill that would let ppl essentially kill homeless folks.
SCOTUS is hearing a case to see if ppl can be arrested for sleeping outside.
GA is moving a bill to criminalize bail funds.
FL is pushing a bill to rollback child labor laws.
It's all related.
Birthright has resumed trips to Israel/Palestine while Israeli continues to kill and maim Palestinian civilians daily.
If Israel is safe enough for groups of Jews to visit on vacation, it's safe enough to stop bombing Gaza.
Ceasefire now. Free them all.
Why ppl choose (rationally) to live in tents: A thread
Pandemic: COVID spreads through prolonged, inside contact w. others. Shelters are crowded. Would u want to live in a room with 30 ppl, sleeping 3 feet away? I wouldn't. Shelters were unhealthy before COVID. Now even more so
DC is the most heavily policed city in the United States. Police do not stop shootings. They do not create safety. More police are not the answer.
Did y'all see how many police were already there?
Thriving, well-resourced communities create safety. Fund communities, not police
During the clearing of a homeless encampment at an L St. NE underpass a bulldozer begins to move a tent with person still inside. This is seconds after when people rush over.
@WTOP
White people, do not turn away. Do not say "this is not who we are." This exactly who were are and exactly how this system was built.
The criminal legal system is functioning exactly as designed: to protect white people, white property, and white violence.
Union Station is in the news. A reminder that there are no public seats at the station b/c they decided that, instead of having seats that homeless folks might use, they'd rather nobody be allowed to sit.
Disabled? No seats.
Pregnant? None
Anti homelessness policies hurt us all
Soap should be free to all who need it.
People aren't stealing soap for fun. They are stealing it because they, like all of us, want to and deserve to be clean.
How many bars of soap could 1 cops salary buy?
Stop leaving things at homeless encampments. Ask people what they want and give it to them. Stop dropping off whole watermelons and pounds of raw potatoes. Instead, give people money.
NEWS: DC just added homelessness as a protected class to DC's overarching human rights legislation.
This took years of work. Thank you to
@WashingtonPffc
for leading the charge and thank you
@RobertWhite_DC
for getting it across the finish line.
In honor of the n*zis being n*azis, here is a pic of my grandfather in law, who survived Auschwitz and many other death camps.
He is pictured helping complete a torah scroll that was hidden during the Holocaust. We will outlive them.
Help me make Mark Lane go viral, not n*zis.
Heads up DC! Friendly reminder that if a strike does occur, you should show your solidarity and not cross the picket line. Plan your grocery alternatives now.
It's below freezing in many parts of the US. Now, SCOTUS will determine if people who are forced to live outside can use things like blankets, cardboard, or a tarp to survive in the cold.
The mere fact of this case existing is a damning indictment on America.
My friend went to the Israel rally yesterday. He brought this sign.
He was jeered at, filmed, threatened, called "scum" and worse, & eventually punched.
He was punched.
He's Jewish, but that shouldn't matter.
Is another world possible? I'm not so sure anymore. But I hope so.
It IS antisemitic to say Jews control governments, have all of the money, run the world, have undue influence in politics.
It IS NOT antisemetic to say that AIPAC functions the same way as other national electorally oriented political organizations.
Of course the solution is housing. Of course it is. That will not happen overnight. The interim step is to meet people where they are at, not to criminalize homelessness by creating no camping zones.
Thousands THOUSANDS of American Jews have dropped everything to get to DC this week to risk arrest and take action against genocide.
The ADL is scared. They know the tide is turning.
Protestors have unlawfully occupied the rotunda of the Capitol today. Our Regional Director
@mermirmanweisel
clearly stated that these far-left radical organizations do not represent the overwhelming majority of the Jewish community. Read our statement:
Collective punishment is not a Jewish value.
Genocide is not a Jewish value.
Murder is not a Jewish value.
Vengeance is not a Jewish value.
The Jewish thing to do would be to stop the massacre in Gaza and end the occupation.
No killing in my name.
If we prohibit encampments, people won't magically decide to go to shelter. They will either relocate their encampments to harder to locate places or sleep outside without a tent. With hypothermia season approaching, both could be deadly.
Pets: You can't bring your pet into a shelter. Would you want to part with your dog or cat or lizard or whatever? Pets are companions, support networks, friends.
Pests: Shelters have bugs. It's yucky. I've had bed bugs, it's not fun. I wouldn't willingly sleep somewhere w/ bugs
Homeless tent cities have existed in DC before this week. They will exist until our electeds fund housing
Ppl living outside are not dangerous. White supremacists are dangerous. People living in tents are our neighbors.
Don't use "national security" as a reason to clear tents.
DC is reacting to white neighbors who don't like seeing the reality of DC's homelessness crisis.
I'm THRILLED this "pilot" will offer ppl expedited housing, but this isn't the way forward.
This is about further invisibilizing homelessness, not housing justice.
Possessions: Often, you can only bring 2 large bags into shelter. What if you have 3? Tough luck. What if you are carrying literally all your possessions on your back in several large bags? You can stash them in the bushes and hope they don't disappear.
Dullani was arrested over 20 times for the crime of being homelessness in America.
The only reason he has a criminal record, which makes getting housed harder, is b/c he was homeless.
This is what's at stake this fall's Supreme Court Case.
Learn more at
"I wouldn't even have a criminal record if it wasn't for the fact that I was homeless."
Dullani's story is not unique. People are being arrested every day for experiencing homelessness, and in April the Supreme Court will decide whether that's constitutional.

It took 1 hour & 55 minutes to read the names & ages of kids killed in Gaza 15 years old & younger. It took abt 8 min just to read the names of kids <1.
Jewish tradition teaches if you kill 1 person, it's as if you've killed an entire world
Thousands of worlds have been killed
This is a list of the 90 people who died without housing in
#WashingtonDC
.
The same DC where
@POTUS
lives. The same DC where Congress meets. The same DC with a $19+ billion budget.
2 reminders:
1) Many Jews are not zionists. Stop conflating the two. (Join us!)
2) Many zionists are not Jews. In fact, Christian Zionists have a huge and growing amount of power in America. (Christians, get your people)
Program rules: While in DC you don't have to be sober to get into shelter (which is good), you can't consume substances once at shelter. You have to be there at a certain time and, pre-COVID, had to leave at a certain time. The rules remove autonomy & personal choice.
Unnamed Foggy Bottom neighbors are spending $20,000 a month in an effort to stop a homeless shelter from coming to their neighborhood.
$20,000. A. Month.
It shouldn't take DC bulldozing somebody to get you to realize that clearing homeless encampments is a bad idea.
But, if it did, welcome.
They tried to bulldoze his tent. They tried to throw him away. Let that sink in.
Cops threw away the urn containing the ashe's of Amber's son.
Amber was fined more than $6,000 for sleeping outside in Grants Pass, where there is no shelter and no housing.
The cruelty is unimaginable. The cruelty is the point.
Amber's story unfolds in Grants Pass, Oregon, a narrative that demands our attention and speaks volumes about the harsh reality of homelessness. Living in a tent, Amber navigates life with resilience, confronting daily challenges that too often remain
This is the proudest moment of my professional life. This vote will end homelessness for 2,400 households.
Thank you to those who voted yes and those who raised their voice. 2,400 more of our neighbors will now have a safe place to call home because of this vote.
!! Study finds that uniform moratoria on evictions and utility shutoffs through November of last year could have saved *164,000* lives lost to COVID-19:
If real, that would make reducing housing precarity easily the best public health measure we've got.
Somebody who experienced homelessness for 6 years moved into housing today in DC.
Despite the horror of the world, good things are still happening.
Shabbat shalom.
Today is a sad day in DC.
@MayorBowser
, responding to vocal gentrifiers, is permanently evicting & closing 2 large homeless encampments in NoMa. Most residents were promised housing, but as of 10/1, only 12/60 ppl had moved in.
This is criminalization, not compassion.
Shame.
DC is the most heavily policed city in the United States. Police do not stop shootings. They do not create safety. More police and security are not the answer.
Thriving, well-resourced communities create safety. Fund communities, not police.

The idea that more police will solve violence in DC is magical thinking. DC is the most policed city per capita in the US.
If quantity of police equaled safety, we'd be the safest city. We're not.
Crime stems from endemic poverty & systemic oppression. Cops can't fix that.
BE NICE TO PUBLIC LIBRARIANS!
It's not their fault DC's COVID testing rollout is clunky.
They're underpaid, understaffed, and do the jobs of social workers and tech support, and many others.
At least let them recommend a book or two for you!
DC has the highest rate of homelessness per capita in the US. 16+% of households are food insecure. But sure, let's donate to the occupying military force who is already being paid and fed with our tax dollars.
The frustration with DC's vaccine scheduler is valid.
And, it is just a tiny fraction of the hours and days of bureaucratic red tape, waiting, and glitches our low-income neighbors experience trying to get basic services like food, healthcare, a cell phone, an ID.
Hundreds of advocates from around the country lie down with blankets in front of
#SCOTUS
. If they were in Grant’s Pass, they would give you a $295 ticket for sleeping with a blanket.

This is your periodic reminder that homelessness isn't a choice that our unhoused neighbors make, it is a choice that our elected officials make by refusing to fund people's basic needs while continuing to treat housing as a commodity and not as a human right.
On a walk today I saw a huge line of 100+ ppl stretched through Malcom X park. It was a line for groceries, a 21st century bread line. Nearly every person was Black or brown. Stop saying the stock market is doing well. Our neighbors are starving but for mutual and community aid.
I cried today.
Surrounded by 150 Jews, mourning the death of both Palestinian & Israeli civilians, I sobbed.
Death will not bring peace. Continued occupation will not bring liberation. Bombing Gaza will not make Jews safe.
May our hearts be big enough to grieve all death.
It's wild to watch millennial & gen-z Jews, whose Rabbis & parents taught us that Judaism requires the pursuit of justice, have our Judaism challenged for doing what they taught.
As a reminder, the Jewish sages said "Justice, justice, shall you pursue" not "vengeance, vengeance"
Nothing can excuse what Israel is doing.
Killing kids, sniping people inside a church, bulldozing human beings, shooting escaping hostages, indiscriminate bombing, continued occupation.
Nothing.
Today is the first time ever that Purim, Easter, and Ramadan are all at the same time.
May we all know peace and justice. May we remember that our wellbeing is intertwined.
Ending the week with good news- somebody who has experienced homelessness and housing instability in DC for 16 years moved into their own apartment today.
Shabbat shalom.
The white suspect who murdered 8 people was taken into custody, alive.
Breonna Taylor was murdered, unarmed, by the State in her own house because she was a Black woman.
Cops know how to arrest w.o killing. They choose not to.
#Atlanta
Stop saying there is a peaceful transfer of power.
#DC
residents are packing go bags in case we need to evacuate. There are 20,000+ armed soldiers here. 6 ppl died from the attempted coup. There are ID checkpoints and military helicopters.
This is not peaceful. This is America
Friendly reminder that a bunch of Jewish holidays are coming up. Please don't schedule mandatory meetings/ events on them
-Rosh Hashanah: 9/6-9/8
(I bet most ppl will take the 6th off)
-Yom Kippur: 9/15-9/16
-Sukkot: 9/20-9/22
-Simchat Torah: 9/27-9/29
All are sundown-sundown
This is your periodic reminder that it is beyond f**ked up that homelessness exists.
Don't get used to seeing people sleeping outside. Don't think it is normal. Don't think it is inevitable.
Homelessness is a choice made by our elected officials, not by those experiencing it.
WE DID IT! The DC Council just passed a budget that will end homelessness for 3,500+ households, in large part by raising taxes on the ultra-rich.
I'm in tears. Holy crap. We did it.
BREAKING NEWS!
@councilofdc
just approved a budget that will end homelessness for 3,500 households, including 2,370 individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.
This. Is. HUGE.
The smoke and hazy air in DC today is another example about how people living outside are those most impacted by climate change and environmental degradation.
From storms, to extreme heat and cold, to air quality, environmental justice is housing justice.
(1/?) Tomorrow, Bowser and Biden will evict around 50 of our neighbors from McPherson Square. This is my attempt to clear up some myths about what is actually happening.
Us: Tax the rich
DC Council: No
Us: Defund MPD
DC Council: No
Us: Move money from the streetcar
DC Council: No
DC Council: We don't have enough money & don't know where to find any, so we're going to cut mental health funding.
Us: CONTACT THE COUNCIL BEFORE 12:30 THUR
A private security guard lit an unhoused person on fire on Sunday in DC
The victim is doing... ok.
I don't have a snarky analysis/ retort. I'm just sad & angry at how much people hate ppl exp. homelessness
(There is an ongoing investigation. I'm not going to share details)
If
@MayorBowser
&
@councilofdc
can find $500,000,000 for sports stadiums, they can find half a billion dollars to end homelessness, fund education and actually give people SNAP in accordance DC law.
It's abt political will. And there is never political will to help poor folks.
The modernization of the Capital One Arena will be an invaluable investment.
With unanimous support from the DC Council, this proposal represents our commitment to keeping the Washington Wizards and the Washington Capitals where they belong – in Washington, DC.
People I love are shaming me for mourning the dead Israeli civilians.
People I love are shaming me for mourning the dead Palestinians civilians.
I refuse to buy into this false choice.
LIFE UPDATE: I'm a tate (dad).
Baby is a perfect little mush. Mom is a rockstar. Dad is tired. Send caffeine and love.
We also got a membership to
@Costco
so this is def the most adult week we've ever had.
.
@MayorBowser
eliminated signing bonuses ($1,500) for PSH case managers to end homelessness the same week she raised hiring bonuses for cops ($25,000, up from $20,000).
Why is there always money for cops but never money for human needs, like housing?
This is unacceptable.
DC asked the National Parks Service to evict 70 people from their homes 2 months earlier than they promised. During hypothermia. NPS listened.
Only 11/70 are matched to a voucher. No additional housing will be offered.
There is a reddit/ tiktok video going around about encampments near DC's Union Station. Let me say 3 things
1) The first shot isn't DC
2) Union Station tents increased b/c Bowser closed nearby encampments forcing people into more visible/ new space
3) Housing ends homelessness
How we treat our unhoused neighbors is indicative of our priorities as a society.
Tomorrow, DC, with our tax dollars, will evict a large homeless encampment, in the winter, in a worsening pandemic, and with many residents not being offered or having received housing.
Shame.
