there’s a lot of reverent writing on Beethoven 9 now and so here’s my take. 1st mvmt: slightly too austere.2nd: amazing 120-proof old style ludwig .3rd: 20 minutes???.4th: an absolute hot mess but beyond delightful, perhaps the first canonic example of jumping the shark.

i talked schubert with a gifted young pianist then circled the park on a bike, then listened to schwanengesang with brendel and after 5 min of major and minor i was 19 again, in love (with who? didn’t matter) feeling sad and overwhelmed and springy and alive and aware of death.

definition of hardcore: at the age of 10 (or 11, or 12? no matter) nina simone gave her debut recital in tryon town hall for the mayor and various tryon dignitaries and the program was some bach toccatas and the art of the fugue.

A master has left us! Remember vividly adjudicating doctoral oral exams in IU, and Pressler asked the poor guy, “What makes Schumann Schumann?” and student was confused and scared and Pressler said “love” which I suppose was true but not exactly doctoral oral exam material.

yesterday on my way home from chelsea i saw through a window the most beautiful banana cream pie i’ve ever seen, cut in scrumptious cross-section, and i deeply regretted not buying it, so now i’m practicing brahms 2nd concerto to capture both that beauty and my scrumptious regret.

With Brahms you often feel you’re in front of a gorgeous painting at a museum, admiring, taking in; (robert) Schumann is like a person in front of a painting who desperately wants to run into the painting and it is irrelevant to him that that is impossible.

“Sempre pp” in Beethoven does not mean “always pianissimo” but is a kind of meta marking … not just very quiet but a hush upon a hush … a sound that is about the act of approaching the inaudible (an act that Beethoven knew better than most).

every time i play bach 1053 i think “goddamnit THIS time i’m going to analyze the second movement once and for all” to be a proper prepared musician and then i start up and find chords there that don’t want to be analyzed, hovering, functioning but not functioning, so incredible.

one of my main complaints when i hear pianists play haydn or mozart is that i hear too much city and not enough country … not enough of the genuinely rustic which weaves in and out of the courtly as in real life back then.

because of an ongoing writing project, i am taking piano lessons (somewhat remotely) with Helène de Montgeroult (1764-1836) whose études are preceded by the most wonderful piano-playing advice and fascinating insight into the early days of modern piano virtuosity.

best part of day: an hour meditating on faure d minor quintet, which has some of the most ravishing progressions of all time, and other baffling passages like musical LSD trips—the hallucinatory is what you want, wonder, bent and curved rules of harmony, a suspension of causality.
