HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY TO ME!!
I'm so excited that DEGREES OF ENGAGEMENT is out in the world. This one means SO MUCH because it was so scary to make the jump into a new category with a new pen name! But here it is, ready for your eyes!
School libraries don't need you to donate copies of Maus and other banned books. They need you to step up and run for the school board so the books don't get banned in the first place.
Suzanne Collins really does the whole "successful author" thing the best. Makes her money, disappears, drops a surprise book every once in a while. Well done.
It happens to me *a lot* because I get conservative young people around me every year talking about September 12, 2001 and "wishing we could go back to unity of 9/12" and my friends when I tell you, "I wouldn't wish 9/11 or 9/12 on my worst enemy" makes them stare at me agog.
I hope
@ChilesJordan
knows how many people are in her corner, not just because she's an amazing gymnast who did a great floor routine, but because she's world class human being who brought grace, sportsmanship, ferocity and joy to the entire country. Forever OUR Olympic Champion.
Dozens of very famous Hollywood men want to make romcoms. Why aren't we letting them all do one?
They're relatively cheap to make too.
JFC, give us and them what we want.
Let's do one better. If a movie is deleted for tax reasons, the rights, as is often the case in book publishing, should revert to the writers, directors and producers and they should be able to sell it to another distributor or distribute it themselves.
when movies get deleted for tax reasons, they should legally become public domain. people should be allowed to upload it anywhere they want. that's the tradeoff you make if you wanna delete your own movie released this year for a few extra bucks, and i think it's fair
So, Ana gets a medal without a ceremony and with a ton of controversy. Jordan’s asked to forfeit her medal and Sabrina, who actually did the 3rd best floor exercise on the day, gets nothing.
Well done,
@gymnastics
.
And you wonder why people don’t take the sport seriously.
First it was "your book can't succeed w/o a blog tour," then "your book can't succeed w/o Bookstagram," now it's "your book can't succeed w/o BookTok," and I'm here to tell you it's actually YOUR BOOK CAN'T SUCCEED WITHOUT IN HOUSE SUPPORT AND THE DOLLARS TO BACK IT UP ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
For gymnastics novices, what happened to Simone Biles today was like if Tom Brady's neck would break if he threw an incomplete pass.
That's it. That's the ONLY appropriate analogy.
And then I have to explain how the "unity" was only for people who looked a certain way and that if you were Muslim or Arab or even perceived to be through sheer ignorance, you were immediately seen as "other," as, "them" instead of, "us."
And then I have to hold my ground and explain to them that I was *there* and I was *their age* when it happened and that, "never forget" means that I don't forget all the bad that came of it too.
If a woman wrote the prequels: Padme would have at least a crush on Obi-wan in Ep 1, then him not betraying his Jedi vows in Ep 2, her turning to Anakin in Ep 3, who's been in love w/ her all along. Her confession that she always loved Obi-wan sends him to the Dark Side. The end.
At some point we're gonna need to acknowledge that there is an entire generation of creators who grew up on transformative works and are wildly unashamed of it.
Every single person I see posting that they've tested positive for Covid-19 talks about how careful they were and they, "got it anyway" and then is like, "we had neighbors over to our backyard and attended a baby shower, but socially distanced!" Like...please just stay home.
First, I have to explain the sheer terror of that day, especially in metro New York, of wondering where loved ones were, in my case my dad, uncle, aunt and several extended family members.
@dancingofpens
I'm VERY tired of things that use romance tropes and then get all, "it's PLATONIC" like...I'm sorry we have ears and eyes and know better. They don't get to have their cake and eat it too.
Those of you who are like, "I WISH GYMNASTICS WASN'T JUST EVERY 4 YEARS!" It's not. NCAA is so much fun! Pick a school and watch. And as for elite, for USA fans, there are minimum three major competitions a year: Classics, Nationals and then World Championships. KEEP WATCHING!
First, "my favorite ex-husband" is such a flex.
And second, Jane Fonda is that extroverted friend that goes around collecting introverts and loves them for who they are and it's wonderful.
Eery tie someone is like, "He's Catholic, it's his religion!" I want to be like: I'm Catholic. I attended a Catholic elementary school and university. I took a handful of theology courses. What he was spouting wasn't Catholicism, it was misogyny. Full stop.
Natalie: George, I still don't get it. Why isn't Padme in love with Obi-Wan?
Ewan: Yeah, George, what the hell? Have you SEEN me?
George: Well, you see...it's very important for dude bros to feel like they would have had a shot with Padme!
Growing older means that you understand Fitzwilliam Darcy was a big of a snob yes, but also kind of an anxious introvert who was just really tired of people being nice to him because he was rich.
Listen Cait Corrain should be held accountable for the Goodreads debacle, but we also have to hold publishing accountable to a certain extent. Can we PLEASE stop telling authors these metrics like GR or TikTok matter more than the in-house marketing & publicity $ and support?
Also, I literally thought of that in three seconds, so it's SUPER clear that there were very, very few female voices in those rooms over the course of that series development. Five seconds after casting Ewan, the story should have been changed.
We are blessed to live in a time where Simone Biles leads the way in prioritizing athletes health, both mental and physical. Of all her accomplishments, this might be her greatest yet. She is truly the GOAT. 🐐

If I'm required, as a public educator, to arm myself, I will leave the profession. Most teachers will. Our job is to educate. We are not soldiers. Get weapons off war out of the hands of those who would do harm. That's the solution. Period.

I don't need to look at the COVID rates, honestly, I can tell how bad it's getting by the amount of times I've seen Tom Holland dancing to Umbrella on the timeline.
Read this. Listen to what this person is saying and feeling. When you go out to eat, this is what you’re putting us through. If you’re dining out right now, fuck you.
Splash Mountain is closing tomorrow and I will never forget the Disney Adult Southern Man (in the Neil Young sense) who tried to get my dad to agree with him that it wasn't racist AF and just "nostalgic" and my dad, a giant Italian American Yankee saying, "Nostalgic for what?"
Anyway, petition for all white boys who are taking over major IP franchises to produce at least 500K words of fanfic written in universe prior to their pitch so we know that this isn't their first fucking attempt and we stop getting *gestures wildly* what we've gotten so far.
We, as a society, should have moved past people having to pay for the basic necessities of existing. That's the scam, folks. I am well aware that our water bills are for the filtration process it goes through. Did you read the original tweet? We've normalized the scam. 🙄
If you are a fandom person at all and you think that shipping is somehow a newer phenomenon or somehow occurring at a higher rate than it was in the past, then I don't know what to tell you, but you clearly haven't been paying attention.
The ‘shipping’ phenomenon is interesting. As an older fan, I don’t remember this practice as prevalent as it is with younger fans. Someone explain it to me please.😍
I’m already asked to take bullets for my students on the slim chance a shooter shows up at my school. What you’re asking teachers to do now is show up KNOWING the shooter is already in the building.
As an author, I genuinely want to kiss the feet of the

writers, if you're approached by CBS or Wattpad itself, the BEST thing you can do for your career is to find a literary agent IMMEDIATELY to protect your interests. Don't get take advantage of because this entire deal screams, "WE'RE GONNA STEAL YOUR SHIT."
Four people died and then Josh Hawley and Matt Gaetz went back on the floor of the Senate and House and repeated the same lies that got those four people killed.
They and their ilk need to be expelled today.
TODAY is the day to call your senators and say they will LOSE YOUR VOTE if they install a new Supreme Court justice before the election. Call RIGHT NOW.
You can talk all you want about how terrible the prequel movies were, but that is the by far the most ridiculous thing about them. And that is saying something.
Not to add on a final thought like a full day later, but it just occurred to me: WHAT IF GEORGE HAD JUST LET CARRIE BE HIS SCRIPT DOCTOR!? SHE WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THIS AND SO MANY THINGS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH BETTER. SPACE MOM WOULD HAVE FIXED IT. RIP

Hey, you. Yes, you. The white author opening up a notebook to start writing a YA novel about BLM and police brutality and protest and riots. Put. The. Pen. Down. Now.
...I'll be honest I don't really understand this post because Ted Lasso (and kind comedy in general) take up about IDK .01% of the 'comedy for adults' space. It's Ted, Parks and Rec and Good Place? Everything else varies from 'an edge' to 'the cruelty is the point.'
BREAKING: The FTC just banned non-compete agreements.
The Federal Trade Commission has issued a final rule making it illegal for bosses to make workers sign noncompetes in any scenario, and voiding nearly all existing noncompetes.
This is a game changer for American workers.
Listen, Ted Lasso said out loud with his whole chest that their show was a romcom and then did not give the main character a romantic happily ever after on the pitch or off it, which is romance's

no no. You don't get to invoke Nora Ephron and break that rule.

Honesty, I kind of wanted Ginny to just play professional Quidditch for a long ass time. I thought it was a cop-out that she 'retired' to have kids. Professional athletes have kids all the time.
What's your publishing dream that people outside of publishing and/or the book world wouldn't understand?
Mine is having my book featured in a book crate/subscription box.

Really fun for everyone that Jason Sudeikis's divorce had to destroy a really fantastic fictional relationship.
what's a ship you'll never forgive the writers for ruining?

Turning 39 in a couple of days, single and childless and very likely to remain so and it's mostly because I've built a life I love and have very little interest in taking on the responsibilities for a man the way my married friends do. I have enough to do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I posted a reel on my IG about the prediction that 45% of women between 25-44 will be single and childless by 2030. Many women in the comments say this is mostly due to the fact that men are not good enough quality for them to marry now.
Are their standards too high or is this
You were not careful. You didn't just "get it anyway." You exposed yourself, unnecessarily, to groups of people (not knowing where they've been), you probably didn't wear a mask because peer pressure and then you got Covid-19. I'm just...very tired of stupid people.
I love all this talk about kids being indoctrinated in schools. Guys, I promise if teachers could indoctrinate kids with anything it'd be like, "when there's a sign posted, read it" or "hand in something, ANYTHING, so I can give you at least partial credit."
There are two kinds of English literature girlies, girls who read Romeo and Juliet and thought it was tragic and romantic and girls who read Romeo and Juliet and thought it was the stupidest thing they’d ever read in their lives.
People in my mentions being like, "they TOLD US why they broke up" and I'm like...that's literally what we're calling bullshit on? It made no sense. I can get on board with things when they're properly executed. This plot line was an absolute shitshow.
Five years ago I had an idea I was terrified to write.
Three years ago I worked up the courage.
