This could be very silly but a director telling me to draw little “star men” for my thumbs was a game changer. It boiled down the figure to the essentials and still could have volume and space and made it easier to draw on top to clean up.
Good morning. Who wants to hear a rant about WHY the US animation corporate industry WON'T make lush animated films like The Boy and the Heron/How Do You Live?
Fact: a project can be a joy to watch and also be tortuous to work on. Watching Spider-verse was fun, but I could tell the amount of work difficult. All of it exists in the same space, it doesn't diminish the experience of watching the film, but I hope it gives ppl perspective.
I’ve said this once and I’ll say it again: it’s not any artist’s fault that it’s hard to break into the animation industry right now. THERE ARE VERY FEW JOBS BC STUDIOS AREN’T ABLE TO CREATE SHOWS RIGHT NOW. It’s not bc an artist is not talented or anything-
Can I just say, that the reason why animation doesn't always look 'alive' or 'unique' is because there isn't budget or time being allocated to making it such. Instead of criticizing animators of not 'studying from life and only studying from animation', we could look at the root.
Hey animation community, this is your reminder that studios manufactured this crisis through ineptitude, and while CEOs still pocket the money for being bad at their jobs, we’re the ones suffering. Everything difficult going on now isn’t bc of you or your skills.
Hi, I work in animation and I don't animate because I draw storyboards. I do try to keep things animation friendly bc I don't want to kill any animator animating my boards, but I don't animate myself and I'm personally not very good at it. I'm a lot better at what I do.
This is the whole point of why marketing exists and why it takes a good chunk of the budget for a film. The whole 'tree falls in the woods' thing, no one will know about it if you don't TELL PPL THE FILM EXISTS. It's not the originality of the idea, IT'S THE MARKETING.
Paramount CEO Brian Robbins says the company is moving away from releasing original animated movies in theaters in favor of IPs.
“We’re not going to release an expensive original animated movie and just pray people will come.”

LMAO buddy, it was never the strike that hurt all of us in animation, it was studios who suddenly decided to cancel projects and not release them due to their own mismanagement of mergers and money! Also, animation va isn’t struck work!
With the SAG-AFTRA strike, animation is no longer immune to Hollywood's unrest. Now actors’ voices will go missing, threatening an increasingly important source of streaming and box office spending.
I’m gonna be real for a sec: I am also currently unemployed. I’m doing ok financially and I’m using this time to help a friend going through medical issues. But it’s rough seeing mine and the crew’s work (many of them who are also unemployed) all over SDCC.
It’s really funny to see ppl accusing animation workers of lying about Cartoon Network closing. You all don’t even live here, what makes you the expert compared to actual ppl who worked in the literal building, and their names are credited at the end of the episodes 😂
Interesting that a news source tied with AMPTP failed to mention that AMPTP is also in negotiations with other guilds and is the one whose schedule ran out :D
Also this was never going to be resolved in one week. In my experience, negotiations have taken several months.
Having worked at this studio and seen how much the production workers were unsupported and given a workload that was at least for 2 ppl on one person, they NEED AND DESERVE UNION MEMBERSHIP. Animation doesn’t get done without a good prod crew and they should be supported and seen
David Zaslav & other WB execs are refusing to accept that WB Animation and Cartoon Network production workers want to be recognized as Animation Guild members.
A petition has been started to force the studio to allow these workers to be part of the union:
The problem with bootstraps/hustle culture is that none of it will help you get a job if there aren't any jobs. You're only burning yourself out when a corporation is trying to replace workers with AI, exploit overseas labor, and creating job creep by combining positions.
Just want to make it clear TAG members can’t publicly repeat what’s happening in negotiations. It’s also not a smart strategy to advertise every move we’re thinking about making so while we love the enthusiasm and support, we hope there’s respect our needs here too 🫰
I hate this reasoning, LA is my gd home, I was born and raised here, my family are here, and when I die, my cold, dead body will be cremated and scattered here. I should be able to live my life, being paid for my work, in my home.
Animation Fans: Why don't you just pack up and move somewhere cheaper and open up your own studio.
Animation Workers negotiating with Studios for better working conditions right now:
US animated films are already kneecapped by only being seen as a 'kids entertainment genre', so corps really go for things that they think will appeal to kids and family. And it's not just the film, the marketing, casting, merchandising all are designed to reflect that.
So there have been some animation “experts” who get the history of animation unions wrong, don’t understand the difference between work and budgets for CG and 2D projects, and yell at animation workers for being “stupid for not striking immediately.
This industry doesn't exist to make art for art's sake, it's set up to make money in a safe and predictable manner. So what gets made is limited, trend focused, and of its time. Plus, it's overseen by a committee whose goal is conform the film to the brand's rules.
So why does the corporate US animation feature industry go for Minions vs something like a Studio Ghibli movie or anything made by Makoto Shinkai, basically anything lush and 2D and colorful? Basically, it's because these films are not thought of as profitable for a US audience.
Say, if, this company also owns a theme park, the tone of what they create will have to match the tone of that theme park. As in, things can't get too dark or too scary or too beyond what is considered 'safe and profitable' boundaries.
Seeing lots of comments calling for TAG to strike next, and that's great! I'm taking it to mean that every person commenting will be actively volunteering and working so that a strike is possible and won't be financially detrimental to our membership!! Let's freakin GO~
Writers, I respect you all so much, but we gotta have a talk about giving me 40-50 page scripts for 22 mins of animation. Totally understand if it’s bc of notes and such, it’s just become a lot more consistent lately, esp if 1 pg= 1 min

The rules don't just restrict the kind of story that gets told, it limits everything: design, colors, experimentation, etc. When something has to exist to conform to a brand that is focused on profitability vs creativity, then the hands of creative work are tied.
The thing is, the money is definitely there to create a beautiful film. The labor and skills are DEFINITELY there as well. But it's so tied with what's considered safe, what will make the most money, what will conform to the overall brand's ideals that it won't get made.
How to keep things animator friendly: if you don't need to draw people walking/running full body, then don't. Be thoughtful when you do action sequences, bc instead of doing everything on a long wide shot, short close ups with action are very impactful.
Before I start, I'd like to plug places to support workers of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA
Entertainment Community Fund:
The Snack List:
SAG-AFTRA Support Campaign:
WGA Support Campaign:
And now that Spider-verse did it first and proved to be somewhat profitable, other films also following that more snappy, exaggerated 3D style of animation in order to hop on that bandwagon. However, these decisions aren't creative risks, they're also doing it within margins.
At times like this, there are going to be scum that slide into the DMs of green artists and offer them “mentorships” that “promise” to get them work. Don’t believe them! Sign up for mentorship circles done by either WIA or the union or other reputable institutions!
The corporate overhead is incredibly limiting when it comes to creativity. Spider-verse managed to exist as a film that pushed some limits but it's tied to a well known IP, so that definitely puts it within safe and profitable margins.
Also, because someone asked, it's not because unions are getting in the way of corporations trying to not pay artists to work in their studios. If you look at the amount of profit each studio accumulates and where the money gets distributed, the money is there to pay for labor.
It's not even about being a super talented wunderkind director who has crazy amazing ideas, if the corporation feels like this person isn't going to fit the needs of profitability, then they're not going to be supported in making their vision of a film.
When “be normal” means conforming to a standard that only favors a small group of ppl, then fuck that and go wild. It’s just not worth it and anyone who demands this of you is not your friend, nor do they care about you. They’re prioritizing their comfort over your existence.
A lot of us were hoping we’d be back for another season and instead we’re canceled. There’s little to no work out there right now. While I feel joy at how our work is celebrated and appreciated by fans, I am frustrated that we’re not considered by the powers that be.
There aren't really good solutions to this. Animation is really expensive and we're well past the years of 'wild west experimentalism'. Independent animation is also really hard to do without good financial backing and distribution.
Trust your animator and leave them room for them to have creativity with your scenes. You don't need to overpose, over-act, over action, the person who gets your scene is also an artist, give them enough of a foundation to get them started and let them shine.
I'm not saying good art can't be made in this system either, but it's not really a system that's made to create good art because it's not the priority. Anyway, I have a meeting and I have to go. Have a good Friday~
The root is capitalistic greed that cuts all of our budgets and schedules and lets no one have room to be able to work fully. This is especially true for overseas studios handling animation that suffer the most in terms of budget and schedule.
First assistant director credit, baybeeee!!! So much love to the amazing crew that I work with, special thanks to
@thirdchildart
for being an amazing director and
@barryjkelly
for being a great supervising director and friend <3 Lower Decks! Lower Decks! Lower Decks! Lower Decks!
One of the best things I did in 2023 was volunteer to picket whenever I had time. Everyone there was super passionate and so appreciative of seeing TAG members show up with our elaborate signs and occasional screaming puppet :D
I love seeing ppl be excited by our work and I love hearing it! I just wish that it also meant that we got to continue to work bc clearly it’s popular and profitable in some way.
This is predatory behavior I’ve seen for years and talked to victims of, these assholes are taking advantage of ppl in vulnerable situations in order to take advantage of them. Mentorships cannot promise you a job IF THERE ARE NO JOBS.
Ok, can I just remind people that AtLA is a fantasy and isn't representative of actual Asian history/culture/people/etc? I love the show, it's what got me into animation, I hold Mike and Bryan in the utmost esteem, but AtLA isn't real and it's not a representation of culture.
A lot of times, less is more. You don't need to have a character flailing their arms to make a point, it's more important to save the gesture at the most important moment of the dialogue in order for the impact to be successful. Think constantly of the crescendo of your scenes.
Hey so I heard Bridgerton did real well for Netflix, so it sounds like romance could be a profitable genre and maybe we should have more options to for viewers to watch romance in different art forms. Like… oh, animation maybe?
Jeff Rowe and Seth Rogen made sure that the ‘TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM’ animation team was not overworked.
“I never want the team to be suffering more than I am,” says Jeff Rowe.

Wild that YT needs to be pressured by a lot of us to ban an account that’s actively harassing women but will restrict educational queer content that isn’t harming anyone 🤷♀️

Like there's some quote or other that we have to 'destroy the math to create art' and I'm not sure if we're looking at the same equation. The math is that a robust schedule and budget that allows for a good work/life balance brings out innovation and creativity.
Super freaking proud of my chosen community 🩷 Animation workers are good folk, we may be dorky and probably undiagnosed on spectrum but good god, we are kind, considerate, empathetic and willing to take on huge odds to protect each other.
Thankful for Star Trek for keeping me employed at a weird time, for having the best crew in the funnest frontier, and for all of the fans who are so supportive of the show. I love all of your curiosity, kindness, and enthusiasm, and I'm really happy to be here <3
I’m sorry that I don’t know the business of streaming and I can’t explain why this is happening. It’s not my job or speciality, what I’m good at is making a show look good cinematically. 🤷♀️
Congratulations to the one comment that has succeeded in pissing me off. Many members of TAG are immigrants, refugees, and or descendants of both. We made it here despite overcoming odds and live in a hostile place that still seeks to get rid of us. You don’t know us so stfu.
MOOPSY FACT: Moopsy's walk is inspired by a mole walking above ground!
@thirdchildart
sent me a video after she gave me my assigned sequences and I was like OH YES.
If you're not being paid overtime, if the piles of work aren't decreasing, if you're barely managing to eat, sleep and clean yourself, then good enough is more than fine. Don't kill the artist here.
🖖 Any cultural critic or media scholar would tell you that Star Trek, as an enterprise (pun mildly intended), helped invent a model for fandom through its faithful following originating in the '60s. The original sci-fi television series broke new ground for its diverse cast and
I still think Spider-verse was a good film, I think the work the artists did should be celebrated and respected, and I think it has important themes about Blackness. AND I think the artists should have been given a better schedule, pay, and assistance. It's exists TOGETHER.
I'm just personally in a really good place right now, I have a job that I really enjoy, I love the way I'm drawing currently, I feel supported and seen by my community, and I just feel very fortunate. The world is weird AF but I'm here, holding hands with the ones I love.
I joke, but
@IATSE
I’m honestly horrified. We animation workers kept healthcare and pension going for every IATSE local during lockdown. We stood in solidarity every time you needed us to. I want to hear a solid explanation from you about this decision.
Oh god
@IATSE
tell me this is bad reporting?
Is there really an agreement that allows members to use genAi models they make? There’s only a few ways to do so (like Stable Diffusion) and are all very exploitative of YOUR OWN members. That gets a pass?
I trust
@kortizart
more than anyone when it comes to how GenAi will affect artists. Our guild has been talking with her team of artists and legal experts on how we can best protect us, I watched her stand up for our rights in the US Senate, etc.
I feel like people aren’t remembering the timeline of the WGA negotiations and are thinking that the 2023 strike happened immediately. Here's a more accurate timeline:
3/20/23- Negotiations began between WGA and AMPTP
4/18/23- WGA voted to strike if 3/1 deadline is reached
Even now I'm seeing ppl tweet about how animation ppl are just whining for 'special treatment' when we just want sustainable schedules and pay to do our work. How on earth is it special treatment when all we want is just the ability to sufficiently rest and recover.
Anyone saying that animation is a cushy job, all of our work is done on computers, oh how fun it is to draw all day blah blah, needs to open their eyes and see the amount of work, thought, and collaboration that came into making Spider-verse.
We're A LOT A LOT smaller in size and resources compared to WGA and SAG-AFTRA, so we need to make up for that with active and engaged membership. What we currently lack in resources needs to solved by all of us organizing so that no one gets left behind.
WGA, SAG-AFTRA and now UPS coming in too. Everyone get ready for Hot Strike Summer! Don't forget your sexy accessories: big ass hat, sunscreen, sleeves, water, and of course, your picket sign!
Hey TAG peeps, if you have any questions about tomorrow's GMM and want to hear my thoughts at all, hit me up. I'm down to listen without judgement and also share my opinion with you with the research I've done and learned~
I see that this is coming from a place of passion and fear, that something they love can be taken away from them. But this approach helps AMPTP more than it supports any of us. It spreads disinformation, sows division, decreases morale and confuses the general public.
I turned 40 yesterday, and it’s a weird time to celebrate. I don’t think I will ever truly comprehend what is going on. For now, all I have is confusion at humanity’s capacity for cruelty to overwhelm kindness. At the same time, I’m grateful for all the birthday wishes I received
Spent the weekend with friends dressed as a pirate on an actual ship!!!! Special thanks to
@aimeekitty
for organizing and
@Lyrical_Girafe
for letting me crash!
"Do you think this statement is outside of union interests/too political?"
Nope. The fact is that unions are political. The existence of unions is an active disruption against just accepting the status quo and acknowledging our united humanity to fight for our rights to live.
Negotiations are a long game, this will go on for several months and things will change and evolve as both sides discuss and compromise. What we truly need from the public is to believe that our work matters, our humanity matters and to
#StandWithAnimation
for the long haul
I'm still baffled at the thought that people can't both be good at drawing and able to exercise their brain to understand concepts outside of art. We may not all be Da Vinci but creativity isn't the END of wisdom, it's the beginning of creating different solutions.
I feel so fortunate to be on this crew with my friends and making this fun show for everyone. I got promoted on season 4 to assistant director and got to shadow our sup director stop learn how to run a show. Being in a safe place to learn and grow felt so very Starfleet 🖖
Ppl seriously think we’re just sheltered nerds cloistered on a happy cartoon island. A lot of us haven’t been able to work since fall 2022 after carrying the studios on our backs in the pandemic bc those same studios canceled projects.
To say this news is a fucking downer is an understatement. The previous merger canceled a lot of work, this merger is probably going to do the same. And who knows if the work we're doing now will even get to air if this merger goes through. This sucks.
@FestivalGoers_
It’s what I’ve said above and what other animation ppl have posted, the building is closed and it’s for sale. The letters were sold on eBay. Cartoon Network has been folded overall into Warner Animation. There are no jobs and there is record unemployment. 🤷
Also, have you SEEN animation workers on the picket lines? We don't just participate, we bring PROPS AND CHAOS. Someone brought a whole ass prop guillotine. One artist was asked to stop getting the cars to honk so aggressively. Every TAG event picket was FULL.
The whole 'is this your man' part of the if Biden should be replaced or not debate is sort of weird to me, bc the point isn't to be loyal to a single person, or even a party. It's about who can best represents the interests of the ppl, for education, healthcare, rights, etc.
