Sasha, most beloved and characterful of dogs, star of my book jackets, was put to sleep last night. She was one of life’s enthusiasts, and unfailingly good company. So goodbye, friend: if you’re not waiting for me when I die, heaven won’t be worthy of the name.
Because it never gets old, a reminder of what may be the greatest book cover ever. Not alone leprechauns, and not even just Nazi leprechauns, but Nazi leprechauns wielding whips. So really BAD Nazi leprechauns, as opposed to, um, the other kind…
Just finished the new
@StephenKing
over coffee and toast. I don’t think he’s ever been more blackly funny, but Holly is also my favourite thriller so far this year. He seems set to go far.
I need to re-read John Connolly before re-reading C.J. Box. Believe I'll start by rewinding to the excellent A BOOK OF BONES. Dark and deliciously rewarding.
Four white shirts I had intended to bring with me to South Africa - along with one red shirt. Thanks to Belarmine cleaners at Dublin’s Swan Centre, I ended up with four pink shirts and one red. Oh, and I’m a “prick” for suggesting they were white to start with. Just saying...
I wrote these lines for ‘The Land of Lost Things’, and I believe them to be true, but it doesn’t make it any easier when they leave us. So, goodbye gentle Juno, my couch companion. Saturday mornings watching old westerns will be lonely without you. X
Due to flooding, the shrine to me that was my childhood bedroom finally has to be emptied. I’m limiting myself to one box of keepsakes, but might have to include this: my battered copy of
@StephenKing
’s Salem’s Lot, the first King book I read, and my favourite for that reason.
“The Sisters Strange”, a web-exclusive Charlie Parker novella available in English, Spanish, French and Italian, will be posted free to my website in daily extracts from April 2nd 2020. Stay safe and well. Remember, we have books and one another...
Talk about delayed gratification: I can’t even open this until I deliver the sequel to The Book of Lost Things. We all draw from the same cloud of inspiration…
Thanks to everyone who sent such kind words about the passing of Juno — our little whippet, and my writing companion. I’m very touched and grateful, and you’re good folk.
Because obviously a young mother should have to spend time with a man who has recently called her “nasty”, never mind one who boasts about assaulting women. What if it was your wife,
@piersmorgan
, or your daughter? You silly, shabby little man.
Just received my first Over Fifties discount at a hotel. It includes breakfast, and probably a nice cup of tea and a biscuit. I have, to put it lightly, mixed feelings about this.
For those of you who have been pining for vicarious hotel experiences, here is tonight’s room. Nice, but vaguely reminiscent of the Three Bears’ house following Mama and Papa Bear’s painful divorce.

Finished this a few days ago on a family holiday. One of the best Charlie Parker novels to date. If you haven’t pre-ordered The Instruments of Darkness then put this on your list. A huge personal inspiration, I probably wouldn’t be a writer without
@jconnollybooks
It’s been a hard year for everyone, so a small bottle of Christmas wine, courtesy of the excellent
@BLANKbottle
, may be just what the doctor ordered. Merry Christmas to all!
Dear Banners of Books, It’s not the kids who read you need to worry about, but the kids who don’t. Best wishes, and may your children disappoint you, John xx
For those of you who sometimes worry that my hotels not always be up to scratch for such a beloved literary figure and noted humanitarian thank you for caring — I greet you from the Scottish Highlands…

I need to spill my heartbreak: my daddy died early on Tuesday morning, and I cannot go to his funeral, and I cannot see my family, and I cannot stand that his huge heart isn’t beating in this world anymore.

@IrishTimesCultr
The Charlie Parker books are individually brilliant but, taken together, they are perhaps the defining masterpiece of modern crime fiction.
I know, look at me, all Mr Fancy Pants. Tonight in Belfast we are rocking a suite. Note free Tayto crisps, as well as both custard creams AND bourbon creams. Truly, this is how the other half lives…

Happy New Year from the kitchen, where the Gentlest Dog in the World™ and I will be having a quiet night in. May the best of 2023 be the worst of 2024 for you all. J x
“When old men start wars, then those same old men should be made to go and fight them. It would save the lives of a lot of youngsters, and get rid of decrepit senile old fools.” — Johnny Speight (1920-98)
Hello Holiday Inn, my old friend/ I’ve come to stay with you again/ Because a book tour slowly creeping/ Led me here to do some sleeping/ But the vision that was planted in my brain/ Still remains/ Of softer towels/ And silence.
We have a book announcement coming tomorrow afternoon. Well, I say “we”. I mean “I”. But I think I’d make a good royal —no, 𝑤𝑒’𝑑 make a good royal. Damn, maybe not, if I can’t get that bit right. If 𝑜𝑛𝑒 can’t get that bit right. Damn again. It’s harder than it looks.
That painting on the ceiling was really disconcerting. I woke up during the night and thought for a moment that I’d fallen out of bed and landed on my side.

I hate it when people steal my look. AND I had to sew the bin bags together myself, not to mention blowing them up, which left me a bit winded. Plus “Writing’s On The Wall” is still the worst Bond song ever. Oh, I’m fuming.
Pleased to show you the UK cover of THE NAMELESS ONES, on sale from
@HodderBooks
in the UK, Australia, and NZ on July 8th (and slightly before that in Ireland).
Check your emails, check your spam folders — a newsletter went out overnight, with publication dates for the next Charlie Parker novel, THE INSTRUMENTS OF DARKNESS, and more.
A friend and reader brought this to a recent signing: the bound US manuscript of my first novel — which I had never seen before — for circulation internally within my US publishing house. We remain together 23 years later, despite that unfortunate early misnomer…
We will send out a newsletter next week with details of this year’s two (2!) books, and a nice little gift marking 25 years of the Parker novels, available only with early copies of ‘The Instruments of Darkness’. You can sign up for the newsletter here:
From my office wall, the glass art version of the Parker logo, which my son Cameron created. This was my 50th birthday gift from him.

Ah, this is more like it for a sophisticated gentleman traveler of my stripe: leather furniture, dark wood, discreet tartan and fancy treats, as well as intimations of an imperial past and a childhood blighted by cold baths and corporal punishment at boarding school.

Three years ago, I tried to explain to the pleasant NRA guy giving a gun safety course in Maine why, and how, Ireland has an unarmed police force. He simply couldn’t process it, yet perhaps we decide the kind of society in which we want to live. This story makes me hugely proud.
Written in the very different voice of Clete Purcel, this is a reminder, if one were needed, not only of how good
@JamesLeeBurke
is, but also how versatile, even in his 88th year. We’re fortunate to have him.
And for those who feel it must be nice to have a publisher who pays, I assure you that I’m well aware of the fact. But my diamond shoes are pinching, which always makes me cranky. Plus my manservant wants a raise, and my champagne is a bit sharp. Still, I soldier on…
Ok, that room was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. After some polite but firm words, I’ve been upgraded. I now have a fan and — sweet! — someone else’s courtesy basket of crisps and Irn Bru. Plus, TWO kinds of biscuit. Truly, my cup runneth over.

Just getting sorted for the

In which the subject, via
@IrishTimesCultr
, apparently does his best to ensure that he’s never asked to attend another literary gathering again, ever.
The new Charlie Parker novel is still a work in progress, but
@HodderBooks
is already working on cover art. We'll announce the title on Thursday. Can you guess? [CL]
I’ll be talking about CARRIE and
@StephenKing
’s importance as a writer on RTE Radio 1 on Sunday April 7th from about 12.20pm. A reminder will follow, but you can listen here: I may even mention the time he publicly corrected my grammar — and rightly so.
Well, first vaccination jab done, and while the lovely volunteers at the Aviva didn’t quite kiss my arm better, they did make suitably sympathetic noises. What very sweet people...
Belatedly, I have learned that when Nelson Rockefeller, Gerald Ford’s former VP, died of a heart attack in 1979, he was said to have done so while “working on a book about his art collection”. He was, in fact, in bed with a 25-year-old aide. I now have my new favourite euphemism.
A huge thank you to
@jconnollybooks
for popping in on his busy tour to sign copies of his fantastic new book, The Land of Lost Things, the breathtaking sequel to the bestselling The Book of Lost Things 🙌🏽📚❤️
@HodderBooks
Hello, folks. Today I’m more conscious than ever of the awfulness of this virus, after an old friend suffered a terrible loss. So be careful - and be kind, both to yourself and others. If it helps even a little, here’s Ch 9 of “The Sisters Strange” J x
And this is the last of 6000 ‘Land of Lost Things’ bookmarks about to be signed; I undercounted by 1000. Ladies & Gentleman, a glass of wine, please, and an ice pack — or as the late Terry Pratchett would request, a bag of frozen peas.
Ask and it will be give to you — Matthew 7:7 — but even if you didn’t ask, you’re getting it anyway. The first in a flurry of hotel rooms over the next few weeks begins with this one, featuring seats for all my ghost family, so they can watch me while I sleep.

If you're subscribing to the newsletter, check your email. A new serialized Charlie Parker story, "The Sisters Strange," will be posted in daily installments starting on April 2. Read all about it (in English, Spanish, French, and Italian):
This hangs on our wall at home, gifted to me by
@JennieRidyard
, aka Her Indoors, because it evoked the world of The Book of Lost Things — and now, The Land of Lost Things too.
And finally, for now, from the salvage operation: a note from the late Maeve Binchy, whom I hadn’t even met at that stage, congratulating me on ‘Every Dead Thing’ being accepted for publication.
Charlie Parker returns in THE FURIES, on sale in the UK & Ireland on August 4th, in Australia & NZ on August 9th, and in the US and Canada on September 27th.
The last signed book sent to me by David Cornwell, aka John le Carré, before he died. I’d sent him a bottle of whiskey, which had become a kind of tradition. I still think I got the better part of the deal.

Thanks to all who’ve send such lovely thoughts about poor old Coco. Juno, her Sister From Another Mother, is a bit lost without her, but she, like us, will persevere. X

Seventeen years after
@jconnollybooks
' beloved bestseller The Book of Lost Things was published, its long-awaited sequel THE LAND OF LOST THINGS has gone stright into the hardback fiction chart.
Springing this on you all, but the announcement of the new book for October will come in a few hours. It’s a limited edition from a specialist publisher, so watch this space...
Tonight’s room is quite simple, as befits a Portuguese medieval castle, but it does come with a view. I like to think this is where my real family came from, before my fake family adopted me while hiding my royal past. Bet they spent my inheritance too, the sods.

Her Indoors,
@JennieRidyard
, is on
@8RadioIreland
until 10pm. She’s promised to play something in memory of Coco, Sweetest Dog in the World ™. We said goodbye to her this week, and we’re heartbroken.
I spent some of last year going through my old files. This is how Every Dead Thing might have looked – and been titled – had Orion published it instead of Hodder. As part of Orion's pitch to buy the book, they mocked up this cover.
