This movie of a cyanobacterial colony growing from a single cell, taking in energy from light and inorganic nutrients to assimilate biomass and reproduce, is the essence of life. We are this with some extra baggage and dependencies. Enjoy the moment!

Life has no intrinsic purpose and we are all finite beings. You will be forgotten, so pls don't chase glory. Do fun things and strive to reduce suffering. No one is getting out of this alive so I find it hard to parse the grind culture of work in face of existential reality.

Hey DOE, I like you (and this paper) and all but come on..cyanoBACTERIA ARE actually bacteria. They are definitely not plants, but without them, we would not have plants, so…cyanobacteria are the best and that is for sure! (Movie E.B.J. and J.C.C.)

Cyanobacteria aren't bacteria or plants, but they act a little like both. As they photosynthesize, they have to balance how much energy they make with how much they use. Scientists @MSUDOEPlantLab found that the process relies on a few proteins:

Lots of novel protein-protein interactions exist in plastico! This is a unique phycobilisome repair complex (sorry Anton for the butterfingers! PI is in the lab…things break! But I found the superglue all by myself!!!)

Thanks to a generous seed grant from @RASEI_CU , I was as able to officially start my 40 year (more if I can make it) time lapse of lichen growth in the woods. Saving those pics for another time. I am feeling at one with the animals out there, a manly Snow White in the forest!

Sorry not sorry. I don’t always play by the rules in my kitchen and like to take a different angle! Bagels should be triangles! Please don’t block me @mike_feigin ! I could call them dreigels instead? I do what the dough tells me!

Hey @mike_feigin , are these up to your standards? Trying another batch now! What should I try to improve to reach bagel perfection? They were the best I have ever eaten, but I am from Madison Wisconsin and so mainly was about the cheese until now (still about the cheese, though!)

@manorlaboratory As postdoc, I would routinely prep >24 plasmids per day with qiagen miniprep kit and vacuum manifold. As undergrad, I would do same with home made “kit”, eg phenol/chloroform and mini sepharose columns (made fresh!). Repeat 2x and done!

Alright, I’ve been posting mushrooms, so might as well show off a montage of my favorite finds! At least one I doubt anyone on Twitter has found (very rare Pluteus mammillatus). If so, let’s see the proof (and then we can be besties!).

My wife has severe allergy to celery (like anaphylaxis severe!) as well as the seeds! It is hard to avoid as base in stocks, and celery juice is used in “uncured meats” without nitrates (because the juice high in nitrates). Lucky I love to make my own stocks, much better too.

That time I told someone I was allergic to raw celery because it makes my mouth go numb and they were like, no it does that to everyone

I had to save two children in one swim session this spring. It was exactly like the picture and so easy to miss. Must be vigilant with young kids in the pool. Bright colored swimwear is key so they don’t blend in. Choking is also silent and I have PTSD from nearly losing a kid.

When the weather is bad, I am even more eager to hit the trails. Solitude and a chance to test myself against the extremes. Today I was rewarded with some amazing hoar frost! Also, better to tell folks about this type of frost using words, not voice. Less confusion that way.
