Educators - here's your back-to-school motivation boost. Join the 151k everyday heroes who have used my TEDx Talk to remind those in the education and social care sector how much impact they have.
It’s our anniversary today and this is what 21 years of marriage looks like.
We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve been angry at each other, we’ve grown three spectacular humans and we’ve done the hard yards needed to navigate life both as individuals and as a couple…

Educators of Twitter, I'm blown over! I posted the vid last night and woke to 2500 views and notifications! I don't need the DFE to listen, but I do want you to hear the truth about yourselves so here's my Christmas message to you - the last 60 secs.
Our marriage is my proudest achievement & is officially an adult as it’s 18 years old today! Over that time our roots have grown together and we’ve written a great joint story. I spent my first 30 years believing I’d never be good enough and the last 18 realising I already was.
When educators who are exhausted from constantly being asked to do more with less, take an unpaid day to fight for the highest good of our kids it is impossible not to support them!

Are you watching teachers? Your impact can't be measured in a set of exam results of an Ofsted report. It's so much more!
#AnAudienceWithAdele
speaks of her old teacher. THAT is the difference you make. Eat it!
Days ago my baby girl asked if she could protest. My values screamed yes and my inner mama bear screamed no. Thanks to everyone who’s engaged with me this week I’ve moved out of fear and past self preservation and Trin is in her way to her (and her dads!) 1st protest. Thank you!
Reason I love Ed

Having had several surnames growing up, I didn’t want to lose mine through marriage. Ed said ‘We’re swapping rings, why don’t we swap names too? He gave me Ampaw and I gave him Farr and we became a family. Happy 50th my favourite human male!
One phenomenal human female delivered to her next adventure! I left her with a ‘Forwenu’ box. A little collection of treats, cards and photos ‘for when you…’ need an energy boost, are missing home comforts etc. Rules: Open max of 2 a week and send us a photo of you smiling!
Hey
@marieclaireuk
thanks for the dinner date you sent me on with you Man of the Month on 6th Sept 1999. 18 years of marriage and three kids later we’re celebrating our 20 anniversary at the same restaurant!
@LeMeridienPCDLY
Working with young people/kids? Thank you for giving your all!

If you’re using my TEDx Talk to inspire your staff in September I have a treat for you! It’s been described as the UK equivalent of the Rita Pierson talk! RT t his and I’ll add you to the mix to win a bespoke personal video intro from me for you to use.
Leaders, you set the tone! When you bang on about wellbeing and then send emails at 11pm you undermines your influence! Try intentionally modelling leaving on time, stating your reason as "I have a life away from work and I intend to enjoy it!" 😉

One of the few positive hair experiences when I was a kid was a lady getting on the bus with a huge purple Afro. The sun was shining through it and she looked glorious! Then I saw this amazing street art. Thank you
@fabiogomestrindade
for celebrating afro hair so brilliantly!
I'm overwhelmed and lost for words!
Not a great look for a keynote speaker - especially one getting ready to speak for Wirral Council today.
On Friday, I won 4 awards at The Speaker Awards: Best Storyteller, Best Live Gig, Most Positive Impact and Speaker Of The Year 2023!

My kind of vending machine! I’m speaking at The Mulberry Prinary School in Tottenham today and found this recycled machine. The children get special tokens as a reward and can use them to choose a book!
This is my ‘Give What You Can Take What You Need’ bowl. Visitors are invited to take a stone for someone else and create one they can gift to themselves with me! What can you give and what do you need today?
@WomenEd
I was told off for not using a knife and fork until a teacher on duty asked me if I’d been taught at home and took the time to teach me. I was 9. It just wasn’t something we did at home. Teachers made a difference is so many ways!
#FridayMotivation
So this is bonkers! Five years ago, after 21 years running my own literacy consultancy, I was invited by two of my education heroes to contribute to a paper on phonics. I kicked imposter syndrome to the kerb and now here's the first of three papers published! I'm high5ing myself!
Lifelong dream achieved today. I sat at a random piano in my fave London station and performed my fave song learned especially to surprise my family! As you can hear from the camera operator at the end he was enthralled! Thanks

If there was ever a sign to disobey! See, I wouldn’t have thought of it but seeing this would guarantee my entire rendition of the opening credits to the 80s TV show Fame. Complete with Leroy style flying splits.
I nearly spat my cornflakes hearing my

At 11 the summer hols meant swapping hot meals and the safety of school for being on the streets and responsible for my siblings. In the last few days check in with learners to see what their summer looks like and reassure them school will be there in six weeks time.
@WomenEd
Saying ‘We couldn’t find any diverse keynote speakers for our conference’ is a bit like when my 5 year old looks for his school shoes by glancing right and left for 2 seconds and declares them stolen by Ninjas.
#womened
This is dedicated to you and all the teachers trying to cram in some learning between all the glitter, tinsel and camels that need a wee. Thank you for the value you add, the joy you bring and the difference you make.
Educators of Twitter, I don't need the DFE to listen, but I do want you to hear the truth about yourselves so here's my Christmas message to you - the last 60 secs.

A level students - whatever happens tomorrow it’s not the end but the beginning of your next chapter. I got 3 Es, cried for an hour then picked myself up, reached out to adults I trusted and went on to become a teacher, a government advisor, a CEO and an international speaker!
Strap yourself in Maureen…
I won SPEAKER OF THE YEAR 🏆and Best Live Gig 🎉at The 2022 Speaker Awards!
I’m sharing this success with those with imposter syndrome. I should be dead not wearing awards like a bra!
This is your time! Be 10% Braver & stand on the truth about you!
Teachers - Know that Monday morning when you welcome those kids back, it has the impact of cold slushy on a scorching hot day. Here I go back to one of my former homes and remember all the little Jaz's on half term right now.

Want to improve behaviour? Grab your Behaviour Policy, rip up the fist page and replace with a new cover that says ‘Relationship Policy’. Better still magpie this Behavior Chart for adults from
@wct_team
. I changed when teachers showed me behaviour was a two way process.
You came into education to make a difference but the pressure from above can make you wonder whether you're having any impact at all! You are. Be the teacher you needed when you were a child, not the one that stress forces you to be!
Hey Twitterarti! It’s my husband’s birthday today and he’s just joined Twitter so he can stay in touch with our youngest’s school. It would be fab if you could love bomb him with a happy birthday tweet today! None of his 9 followers know it’s his birthday!
@Silver_B_D
Imposter syndrome? The struggle is real even if you’re the only one feeling it. This little hack was the beginning of the end of me feeling I wasn’t good enough.
A few years back I gave birth to my first human. Today she’s smart, resilient, funny, compassionate, strong, emotionally literate, brave, self-aware, and kind. Basically she’s become the woman I want to be when I grow up. Happy birthday Trinity! Keep being brilliant! 🥰
OK I know I’ve had several 50th birthday parties over the years (and one 60th!) but I’m honestly not lying this time! Already overwhelmed with the messages, videos, cards and pressies! I have so many phenomenal friends I could very well spontaneously combust with happiness today!
Fanct a bit of light relief? This time 21 years ago I didn’t even know this guy. That evening my life changed. You can read
@marieclaireuk
report here!
Thanks to the school leaders have reached out. I can no longer stand by and watch so many heads in pain. I’m going to offer coaching hours where we can walk alongside you and help you process some of the challenges of leadership. Please share thoughts on what you feel you need!
When my kids turn breakfast into a battle zone I simply reach for one of my spectacular school run hats! It’s a great deterrent but has even more comedy value if you actually wear it while you take them to school! Here’s some shark wisdom!

Today I’m off to party ‘til the break of dusk!!
I’m finally 64 and my favourite husband is taking me to a RnB Brunch. Dancing 12-5pm, home for 6pm. Bra off at 7pm and bed by 8pm! The perfect ‘night’ out!
Anyhoo, we were chatting on the train about toast in school and here’s my
I’ve been hanging around this spectacular chap for exactly 20 years and I’m still giddy with excitement to be in love with someone who has turned supporting and challenging me into an art form!
To my Ed Everyday Heroes this is the trajectory you interrupt.
@GarethMalone
had me in tears tonight with sadness and gratitude! NEVER underestimate the impact of asserting the value of another human. Especially one others have given up on.
Ed and I in the car waiting for our middle child to collect his A level results! If this is you remember you’ve embedded resilience in your kids and no matter what they have options! This is not the end! It’s not even a semi colon let alone a full stop!
In 1991 I sort of won Blind Date! My date, John from Leeds, left me in a romantic Austrian restaurant climbed out a toilet window and went to McDonalds for a Big Mac! At 20 I failed on Blind Date. At 40 I failed on The Apprentice. At 60 we’ll there’s only one choice..Love Island!
As a kid, I used to walk past The Albert Hall thinking people like me didn't get to go into places like that. Tomorrow I'm on stage delivering a keynote to the everyday heroes of
@TransformTrust
. It's more than an honour to stand with teachers like the five that saved my life.
Thanks to those doing contingency plans. Special thanks to schools considering food alongside homework. Food isn’t your primary job but it goes a long way to making actual learning possible. My free school meal was often the only time I ate and I’m still grateful for that today.
Guy delivering leaflets: Could I use your loo?
Me: Sure. Watch out though Will Smith is in there
Guy: Arghhhhh! (Followed by foreign language swear words I can't spell.)
Me: I did say...
Guy: I thought you were like a crazy lady!
Advice from my kids…
Me: I’m having a wobble! My baby is leaving!
9 year old: First of all Mum, what baby? She’s taller than you. And B she’s not even a teenager anymore she’s an adult. You’ve done an OK job and now you can try harder with me.
Last weekend, our date night was going to a friend's wedding which was glorious. Reckon we scrub up well don't you think? Next year is our 20th wedding anniversary - I think we best start planning now.
Tell me - how shall we celebrate it?

Mr Williams was the teacher that believed me. When I told him about my abuse, he waited with a cricket bat until a social worker came. He saved my life.

Leo ‘got fired’ as pencil sharpener monitor & dramatically recounted his tale of woe! I empathised and explained how important it was to take care of equipment. Found this in his bookbag ‘I’m sorry we lost the sharpeners. Here are some you can have. Can I have my job back?’
I've agonised over sharing this note to
@educationgovuk
it's not criticism but a genuine offer. I've shared it cos it champions Everyday Hero Educators and I want change more than I want to be right (and I want to be right a lot!)
You could wait to spend £79 on a banner that translates ‘Some guy in a suit says we tick nearly all the boxes’ or you could tell the truth about your school and celebrate who you are what you do for those you serve!
A thread…
It's the anniversary of my TEDx Talk today.
“The Power Of Everyday Heroes” celebrates the impact of teachers and has been shown over 120,000 times all over the world.
Also today, I heard the utterly heartbreaking news of headteacher Ruth Perry…

Teachers have asked me why I didn't disclose sooner. I did. Most days. But because it was in what I DID rather than what I SAID it wasn't heard. Nia from

Here’s to you! You navigated another week and lived to tell the tale! Recognise, acknowledge and celebrate your wins! This week I’m raising a glass to the 10,000 Everyday Heroes I’ve spoken to almost via my keynotes so far in 2020!

Helping Leo have a wee on the train I discover he has 4 pairs of undercrackers on.
Me: Sweetie, what on earth…why have you got so many pants on.
Leo: Well I like all of them and you said we are going on a 'venture.
Can't argue with his logic.
Take time today to celebrate the wins of the week, but also the joys that you have around you. Here we are at
@centreparcsuk
chatting about the week and laughing. 22 years with this human 💘 I refuse to let my past dictate my future! Happy Sunday - Jaz x
Happy Banana-een! My fancy dress costume ‘Glamazon Banana of Doom’ caused absolutely no stir on the tube today. I clearly did a most successful job of blending in!
My littlest chicken decided he wanted to sell his Pokemon cards. I suggested eBay but he said he wanted to ‘meet people and have a chat’ so he’s made a sign and is currently sitting outside in the rain waiting for someone to walk past. So proud of the little fella!
Those of you who've watched my TEDx Talk will know my bro died of a heroin OD. Each yr I cry & blame myself. This yr I chose to forgive myself. It doesn’t change the past but it does clear for a new way of being in the future. This weekend forgive yourself
Thanks for your airbrushing article
@jameelajamil
. I was driven by fear then discovered my willingness to be vulnerable was the very thing people found empowering! Here’s how I’m using that to encourage others to stand.
On day 2 of
#homeschooling
I discovered I know less about rivers than my 8 year old who laughed out loud at my attempt to explain oxbow lakes. Every lesson makes me more grateful for educators going above & beyond to educate, nurture and inspire my kids. I’ll do playground duty!
My latest birthday celebration was dinner on the beach with my beau. It’s easy to be grateful when the external is wonderful but fulfilment is being able to choose how you show up when life serves you more stress-filled days than sunset dinners.
Today's quote: 'When you can look beneath their behaviour that hurt you, and you can see the frightened child, it becomes nearly impossible to be angry or carry a grudge.'
I'm so grateful for all who get in touch after my keynote but this floored me. I know what this would have meant to me and from lived experience can tell you that the smallest acts of empathy have the biggest impact. You don't have to be a social worker - just be human. Be you!
Want to inspire and motivate your staff in Sept? How about reminding them that the difference they make is more than can be measured? Use my TEDx Talk. RT and I'll choose one of your retweets to record a personal video for your team of Everyday Heroes!
I nearly didn’t contribute to
#TheWorkingClassBook
cos of an old and embedded narrative about ‘knowing my place’ when it comes to class. Today I’m speaking

conference in Manchester, being transparent about the truth and the voices that still go unheard
Omg I’m having an out of body experience! I just spoke at The
@UKHouseofLords
to a room full of of FE professionals, MPs, Lords and Baronesses on social mobility.
@NickyMorgan01
introduced me and I was the warm up for
@Lem_Exeter
the UKs only Prof of Social Mobility! Pinch me!
I made these three humans! Obviously, Ed has also played a key role!
Basically what I’m saying is…I did this!
I did the daily work of reframing my limiting beliefs. I kicked Imposter Syndrome to the kerb.

Finding the holiday hard? In my first 29 Christmases I navigated family dysfunction, brokenness, loneliness, hunger and fear. Then things started to change. Where you are now is not a full stop. You future starts with you having more empathy for yourself. Oh yeah and remember...
Whether you're taking annual leave for a fortnight, a teacher on a
#summerbreak
or a parent juggling work and school holidays - actually switching off can be hard.
Give yourself a break this holiday and do something totally different from your day job. Here we are!
If I had £1 for everyone who mistook my husband for
@idriselba
on our date weekend I’d have £26. That’s including the group of teenage Russian tourists who were particularly insistent and so difficult to convince otherwise it was easier to just pose for selfies with them!
In the early days, when I would pack a bag and scream at Ed that I was leaving, he’d respond by pulling his bag down for the wardrobe and ask, “OK, where are we going?”
Being in a relationship with someone who has navigated any sort of trauma is rarely plain sailing...

Hey Leaders! Using my TEDx Talk to establish a shared WHY and remind your team how powerful they are on your INSET day? I have a gift for you! RT this, leave a comment with the name of your school and I’ll record a personal video message for you to play!
My experience of trauma is that you have two lives. 1 before processing and 1 after. Processing usually involves telling someone and if your role requires the integrity, going public. This article is a huge win for
@TeacherToolkit
and for those still living with stolen shame.
When shopping with my 3 year old I saw a magazine with a brown girl on the cover. I burst into tears. My whole life I'd seen non-brown faces on mags and just accepted it as 'normal'. Regardless of politics, VP 49 is a win for those who have discounted themselves due to difference
I have something exciting in the pipeline! Weekly coaching around wellbeing, resilience, overcoming fear and professional development that you can use with your team and your family and makes you realise how much power you have! Sound good?
Days like today make me so grateful.
I’ve just been booked for my first in-person keynote in the US since the pandemic grounded me.
I always take an assistant when I travel and this time my daughter Trinity will be my right-hand woman!
Happy

2021! 2 truths: 1. You’ve had an impossibly crazy 15 months and are completely cream crackered 2. The impact of you showing up as your full fat self and fighting for the highest good of your students leaves a lifelong legacy.
